The PS3 is region free.
Yes, but that doesn't mean 100% of all the games are. Publishers can choose to turn on region-locking if they want to be dicks about it. Persona 4 Arena says Hi.
James
PS3 games can be region locked just like the 360 can. The difference is that MS charges for each region a game has allowed (I think, not 100% sure on that), so more publishers choose to only have one on that system.
[edit] Actually I can't find anything backing up that MS charges, that might have just been a rumor. All that I see is that it's just up to the publisher.
I forgot about Persona 4 Arena. Damn you, whoever made that game!
Assumed region free, given that only one game has been so far.
I'm so spoiled my iOS that I can't even shooters with a controller anymore.
That doesn't make any sense though. Why would the same publisher release a region free game on PS3 and the same one region locked on 360? The PS3 is region free, because the Blu Ray region for the US and Japan is the same, so asshole publishers have to do something to block that.
Why would a publisher's PR publicly discuss the merits and reasoning of region locking if they're only going to do it for some systems? We can sit here and guess all day (maybe MS' initial contract for each game is only for one region and publishers don't care enough to add on the additional ones) but unless you've got some info I haven't seen everything points to it just being up to the publisher.
I'm sure as hell not meandering around Bobby Kotick's head, and that's where that guy's orders came from.
I'd love to be able to jettison the J360. But this is still only one game, so I think I'm still stuck.
I've read that bit about MS charging for certification on a per region basis. Microsoft does not publically comfirm the policy but it's almost certainly true, what with all of the unofficial developer commentary on neogaf. It's similar to the way everyone knows that companies take a 30% cut from DD sales but it's very hard to get official documentation.
Well seeing how I have 80 some games for that one and like 4 or 5 for the other, that probably won't work. Unless all my US games are region free. Granted, I am not playing it, but still.
Almost all the US games are region free. Remember that I had only a J360 for roughly two years. The one I remember being annoyed wasn't region free was Deadly Premonition.
I only have trouble with Rock Band and the occasional Games on Demand sale. Everything works fine on my J360.
Deadly Premonition is terrible; I wouldn't miss that game.
what am I reading
I have a small handful of US-only games. Armored Core for Answer, AC 5, original VF5 (doesn't matter any more), Wartech, Deathsmiles. Sort of annoying. Also annoying that I can't get cheap Raiden IV or Raiden Fighters Aces.
Is Deadly Premonition really worth playing through those combat bits? Honest question, I've only seen a bit of the game.
I haven't played it, because I couldn't when it was released. I had already gotten rid of my US 360. I'll tell you in six weeks though!
I watched the Giant Bomb Endurance Run because I could fast forward through a lot of lame shit. The game sucks REALLY BADLY but the other stuff is pretty compelling.
Atlus. They claim it was due to a concurrent US release and that the US/JP versions were 100% alike in features, to prevent Japanese from importing a cheaper US version.
OTOH given Under Defeat HD is region locked on 360 only and NOT PS3, I don't think 5pb will go out of their way to region lock unless some US publisher has a deal ready to get Ketsui out here. I'm hoping P4A is the last RLed PS3 game.
I'm surprised that Activision would talk about the merits of region locking, esp. when every US CoD plays on J360. Koei Tecmo generally does region lock all their US 360 titles (OK, the US Ninja Gaiden II is region free but that was published by Microsoft)
My bullshit detector was set off by the P4A justification because the logical thing to do would have been to lock the cheaper version and let crazy people and/or Europeans import the Japanese one if they really wanted it that badly. I feel sorry for anyone who wanted to play that game in Europe. Eight months delay. What the fuck? This isn't 1990 anymore.
Blame Index. Anecdotal evidence shows that they are behind for a few of Atlus' uncharacteristic decisions.
Impressions of this are in. Second hand information from Japanese forums indicates that it is identical to the 360 port except for additional bug fixes. Both the game and the Super Play Blu-Ray included in the LE are region free.
