Frog. Dude. Please adjust your medication.
yeah but
you know what game I hear is good
Watchenstein.
Been playing this lately, it's great! I just got to The Moon.
playing this now
Its mostly good. But I really fucking hate how the controller works with gun select.
Alright, beat it.
This game has problems. You can tell that it probably had different people with different visions for the game at different times. You can tell that the story was probably changed several times. You can tell that there was some quick grasping at the success of other games and attempts were made for "me too" to cash in, the most obvious being Bioshock infinite. At one point the game was probably intended to be B-movie schlock. Then after BI release and acclaim, things were changed to be more 'mature', though ultimately falling flat or looking humorous because of the schlock.
The love story feels tact on and in its rushed pacing comes off as creepy and maybe even tragic in ways not intended by the designers. The hero's love interest is probably a pervert or deviant. Its presented in a romantic way, but ultimately he falls for a girl that might have been raping him for 14 years while he was vegged out, or at the very least has a fetish for serious impairment. It's made all even more tragic in that she's the nicest thing he knows from the war. Out of all the horrible battles and war, his happy place is a woman that's probably been raping him in the bath for 14 years. And Jesus Christ at all the deep raspy voice romantic Monologues. Like the one given as he's pounding away at his deviant girlfriend while only minutes before you were forced to indulge a Capcomesk button clicking scenario with a schlock romantic couple of a Gay Dandy and his aged girlfriend/wife.
The game can't decide if it wants to be a B-movie like game, or attempt for the prized position of art. I don't know, maybe the makers were attempting some kind of parody of 'deep' games as some sort of industry commentary. If that is the case, they succeeded. But given that the story seems to aim for something like Bioshock Infinite, and the laser gun crap forces the player into Portal like action, Its probably just a haphazard cash grab.
Another way that you can tell that the teams were changed, people were fired, and that direction had been changed several times is the set design. Little things were not fixed in the transitions. WW2 Germany did not have pallets. They left those in from when the game was modern. 1960's US, EU, and UK did not have exposed house wiring with bakelite switches and plugs. More noticeable is that they did not stay consistent with BJ's character model. In the early parts of the WW2 levels, BJ is seen as a young 18 year old. But by the end of the WW2 level, when you're watching deathhead kill your friends, his face is in his 30s, from later in the game.
you can look for yourself
watch a first few custscenes
Look how slim his face is. The lack of lines around the mouth and eyes. Then jump to 7:20 and watch the face shot. Its 30 year old you. Face covered in age lines. The chin is no longer smooth, and has formed a crease down the middle. The head and shoulders are wider. You'll also notice in some of the young you cut scenes the voice is 32 year old you and sometimes young you. So are the first levels flash backs? Or did they fire the original voice actor? Or did they fire the original team doing these scenes and were forced to use the newest assets when they changed the story?
Raspy inner dialog a good story does not make. This game has problems. I would have rather they picked one direction and stuck with it because as it is, it could really misinform young people that take it at face-value and do not realize they are playing the game equivalent of She Wolf of the SS
Also, it is probably unimportant at this point, but I hate the weapon select system for playing this on PC with the xbox360 controller. It should really let you pick two first select weapons, then default to the next powerful gun you have ammo when you run out. The game should never go to the fucking wall/box cutter in a firefight. Never. Having the thing no auto drop to something with ammo in the middle of a firefight is infuriating. Going to the laser gun with the wall cutter in the middle of firefight is infuriating. The game not fucking pausing while you use the left analog stick to select a different gun, and being shot at, even when you take cover, is fucking infuriating. As annoying as it was in Bioshock Infinite to only be able to have two guns at one time at least it solved this problem.
So what was good about it? Well, the levels look amazing. It might have an incoherent poorly assembled narrative, but everywhere you go looks great. There is a lot of diversity in environments. Extra stuff like mech combat doesn't last so long as to become tedious. And the levels aren't really too long. They are very balanced length wise. Enemy AI is better than BI. Enemies aren't minor annoyances in the pretty levels. They come after you. They hunt you down. They hide behind things. They make you earn your kills. It also reminds me a lot of The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay
An aside, maybe I'm getting older, or more mature, or whatever, but I guess I'm growing less tolerant of bad writing in games or movies. I'm getting really tired of tacked on love stories. I'm getting really tired of people shitting on history just to have good guys and bad guys.
Maybe I'm old manning on my porch, shaking my cane at the kids, but I really have to wonder how much we fuck up young kids by feeding them horseshit in these two areas. Telling 12 year olds that there will be a shining wonderful relationship and it will just happen. You'll get it for being a hero. And that history is black and white, and you're probably "white"
This game never touches on it, and even ends with some sort of dialog quoting something about the statue of liberty. But the truth is, your main character probably borders on being a terrorist. It all makes as much sense as if magical Indians beamed an Indian from the founding of the US to the future, and he systematically destroyed the US government, the military and police and took the US back for the Indians.
Hell, make that game. I'd play it. It would be worth it just for all the puckered assholes.
Seriously, how well do you think it would go over if there was a game about an time traveling Indian, at the white house gunning people down because of the trail of tears?
EDIT: I'm not defending nazis but there comes a point where you have to stand back and really think about what you're playing. You know, ask yourself if things would be ok if you moved things around a little bit. Like the bad polish accents. Or the bad jewish accents. Why is that ok? What if it was anyone else?
