I just saw Civil War. I'd put it close to Avengers 1 — The movie had a lot of action and fun and something actually happened (the Avengers collapsing). Dr. Strange being its own unique entity and space in the MCU is probably a great strategy by Marvel to give us a break from the drama of their mainstream heroes. I'm looking forward to it.

Ant-Man and Spiderman were my favorite parts of Civil War. They seemed to be having a lot of fun out there while everyone else was all broody and annoying. I thought Black Panther was really badass too. They made him seem formidable when he got the upper hand on Bucky a lot. The big end fight was great—I really felt like they all took a beating and it was personal.

The Zemo stuff didn't bother me that much. While it was a bit contrived I felt that they explained it well and linked it heavily with the data dump of Hydra and SHIELD in Winter Soldier so something actually came of that movie's final moments.

Yeah, I put this firmly between the The Avengers (1st), Civil War (2nd), and Ultron (3rd). I liked it and agree that the short spurts of spidey and ant-man/giant man were probably the best parts of the film.

The orange slices line from Ant Man was weird and misplaced.

I find most of his jokes awkward and misplaced, but I laugh almost every time because of it.

I read a lot of marvel zombies over the weekend.

I started because someone posted an ultimate Dr doom beating wholesale zombie ass.

It's interesting but it ultimately blows it'd loaf quickly and doesn't do much in later series.

Zombie stuff is most interesting in the fall or having someone discover the fall. It's the mystery of the horribleness. How deep does it go?

After you know everything it just fizzles out.

The stand was like that. The best part of the tv show was the start when you were figuring everything out

It was a hot mess of way too much going on packed into too tiny a space, to where scenes that were meant to transition were cut because they didn't have time to explain what they didn't have time to explain. Characters could barely speak unless it was specifically and directly discussing the next plot point. Hawkeye having a family was the only breathing moment of the entire movie. The visual design teams were apparently on lunch when Vision got made.

It wasn't horrible but it felt and flowed like a flashback episode where important scenes from ten different episodes got cut together and they just hoped it would work out in the end.

Overall I liked Civil War, but even though it's better than Avengers 2 there's still too much cast just for the sake of having cast. Carter could've been completely cut out and had all her stuff replaced with Widow doing the double agent thing, and while I enjoyed Spider Man and Ant Man there was no need for them for all of one fight scene. Felt like a lot of contractual obligations were going on. Also seemed like motivations throughout were just:

Captain America: Hey, Tony, here's why we're doing this-
Iron Man: Nope, I refuse to listen to you for literally no reason, and not listening is what led to Ultron, but I'm going to do this stuff anyway because someone died because of Ultron because I didn't listen to anyone else. So I'm not listening.

But hey, cool final fight.

Oh, and the stuff with Vision and Scarlet Witch was well done. I liked all of that.

You guys never did like an outdoor activity funday as a kid, or participated in some kind of like group outdoor activity. They always have orange slices, to like refresh you sort of thing.

Maybe wherever you grew up? Never heard of it. Despite growing up next to an orange grove.

I did a lot of camping, youth groups, summer camps, boy scouts, all that jazz when I was younger. I've never heard of that either.

Orange slices between every period or quarter or whatever it was in soccer. Orange slices after the game in baseball. You bite down on them and pretend that they're a football mouthguard because you're eight years old.

No orange slices in hockey though.

Of course, by going with oranges Marvel blew their chance for a Pepsiman cameo in the big battle scene.

We had them when I was playing sports growing up. Now everything has to be packaged though, so my daughter gets juice boxes and the like.

Yeah — I didn't even realize people didn't get the reference. That shit was all over youth activities when I was a kid (soccer, sometimes hockey, etc). At any rate yelling out for orange slices after a big climactic battle was pretty funny IMO.

I loved Ant-Man in this movie. I feel the end battle would have been shittier without him. But then again I'm a huge fan of his character.

Its just a 80s 90s little leahue thing. They did it everywere.

I must have somehow missed the ubiquitous orange slices growing up.

I'm confused at the Vision being "distracted" line. Bucky and Cap take off in the jet and the chase is on. Vision is down on the ground with SW, looks up and fires. Falcon goes oh fuck and dodges it, WM gets hit. Can Vision direct his shots afterwards or something? Because the way it's shown, WM getting hit had nothing to do with Vision being "distracted", Falcon just had the presence and skill to get out of the way in time and WM was oblivious.

I think the biggest nitpick of the movie is that Vision simply disappears for most of that fight, like they forgot about him until he shoots the laser at the ground to stop Bucky and Cap running.

He was only focusing on Falcon, and not everything else. He'd have probably not fired if he knew WM was gonna eat it on a dodge. Maybe?

Watched apocalypse. It's ok. Fun action. Writing on part with so so Saturday morning cartoons. Some plot holes.

I'm seeing Doctor Strange tonight in IMAX 3D.

A friend of mine saw it a week ago in Mexico City and said it was great and trippy. I've been looking forward to this one.

First Marvel flick I've seen that earned the 3D dolla I spent, but it's not the greatest movie they've ever made.

I really enjoyed it! My college roommate worked on some of the 3D fractal shots.

Watched Dr strange, it was cool.

I dunno, the exposition was tough. Its reliance on the "explaining the forces that threaten the universe between punches" trope made it seem like a long CW show.

Lemme just grunt out your answer to "who is dormamu" while I'm in this headlock.

That said, the 3D was cool and Strange is perhaps a prescient model for the Trump-era hero: faced with unstoppable, singular evil, all we can do is filibuster the shit out of it until it gets bored, cuts a deal with us, and moves on.

So Captain Marvel being a prequel to Ironman seems neat to me. The inclusion of Nick Fury and the Skrulls are also great. Builds familiarity while also giving a villain nerds clamoured for for awhile.

The Ant-Man and Wasp movie looks like it's going to have a pretty stacked cast. But why such a heavy investment I wonder?

The biggest news is something they didn't say directly: they've made some kind of deal with Fox to get at least parts of the Fantastic Four rights package back, if not the whole thing. Back when Avengers 1 came out, they said they used the Chitauri - the Ultimates universe version of the Skrulls - instead of the real deal because the Skrulls were tied up in those rights.

I figured the Watchers appearing in GOTG vol. 2 was a big hint towards that being the case.

Guarantee they're keeping something waaay under wraps for Infinity War, be it Wolverine or FF.

There is no source. This is reading between the lines to find the only plausible explanation for the difference between the facts five years ago and the facts now. Apart from the Skrulls situation I outlined above, there's also the fact that Marvel's licensing division has quietly lifted the ban on Fantastic Four merch (F4 Marvel Legends figures were revealed at Comic-Con and the out-of-print F4 expansion for the Marvel deckbuiling game, which had commanded absurd prices on eBay for the last 3 or 4 years, finally got approved for a reprint), which as they made no secret was in place to undermine Fox's hold over the film rights.

I haven't seen a new marvel movie in a good while now. I could not force myself to watch dr. strange, and have no hype seeing thor ragnarok or avengers infinity wars trailers. I am honestly suprised I got so burned out on marvel's take on their own properties.

Dr. Strange is so visually engaging that I think it's worth checking out.
They've definitely saturated the market, but the quality of the films is actually pretty good considering how quickly they're pumping them out.

I think Dr Strange is kind of where they hit the edge of what I'm interested in seeing. I am still interested in Infinity War but Thor wasn't really grabbing me until I saw the trailer. Even Guardians 2 was only so so for me. I want to see them pull it all together but I'm starting to think it might be time for them to ease off.

Strange was dull as hell with a couple of good sequences. Lego Magic.

I mean the story of Strange was a bit dull. But Marvel continually showcases creative film making in almost all their movies. Baby Groots dancing sequence at the start of GotG Vol. 2 was an interesting take on yet another epic battle. Dr. Doom being the next big bad after Thanos definitely rejuvenates my interest.

I know nothing about Dr. Doom outside of MVC. Was he actually an interesting villain in the comics?

He's the absolute best bombastic dialoge comic book villain of all time.
