I hope that we do discover how they did it, and it was actually really simple but horrible.
Like they made those perfectly square stones by capturing neighboring tribes and making them smooth the surface by hand. And then made 200 people move it by hand.

is pretty much what most people are fighting for when they want creationism taught in class. They aren't trying to build perspective into the classroom. They aren't asking for a religion / history class where students learn about the different religions of the world and how that impacted their culture, and in turn, history.
No, they are asking for the school to be an active participant in shielding their children from the ideas and culture of others. They want their children to be as much like them as possible, because that familiarity makes them feel more secure. It keeps the world around them less scary.
Also, I've finished three. As I told Yoshi, though, perhaps I'm not so good an author since I've been trying to get a literary agent for years. But it's still a cool coincidence you brought up that example.

I have a fairly similar idea to Cal's, except it's of a second Earth where people are born after dying in ours. They retain their memories but their new bodies are a crapshoot. Technology is much more advanced for the current time period thanks to scientists living an entire second life span. Main dude is a private eye who finds people you knew in your previous life for a price. Off topic!
In terms of religion, I don't really care what I'm labelled. Someone famous said it better than I ever could by quipping that they also didn't think Zeus was a real deity who existed, but there's no organized, named group that gets together to actively do that. It just comes from life experience and analysis.
I think religious folk try to see the opposing side in their terms, based on their own experiences and thought processes. I don't have faith that there is no god. I don't believe that there is no god. I have absolutely no horse in that race.
If a powerful alien force or being were to come to Earth and make its presence known then it would obviously exist. As it stands right now, many different factions have dreamed up fairy tales to explain why we're here and even to describe specific deities. While interesting, I don't see why I should give them more thought than characters from a Stephen King book.
This is why I love Scientology. You can practically see what happened 1000 years ago happening right now. It's hilarious to hear religious people debunking a new religion.
