Fuse (PS3/XBox 360)

So a bit of background info on this game, Fuse is a new Insomniac IP (formerly called Overstrike) and is their first multi-platform game after having developed for Sony exclusively.

The initial trailer for Overstrike showed a more cartoonish/stylized version of the characters (Dalton, Izzy, Jacob, & Naya):

However, after Insomniac did focus groups they decided to change them to look more gritty and realistic and changed the name to Fuse:

We started to discover that everyone thought this was a game for their younger brother. We would hear this from 12-year-olds. So we decided that we needed to make a game that had an older appeal."

So the latter images and name change is what we got.

I would have preferred the original designs since they seem a lot more unique and stylish but the new designs after getting used to them are okay even if veering into the more generic tactical look territory. Anyway, the demo's been out for a few days already and I initially was going to write it off as your typical run in the mill 3rd person shooter but it actually has some pretty fun game play built around each character's unique Fuse powered weapon and attributes which makes the game more focused on team play.

You can also play it just fine solo with the bots but I do think that it's one of those games that shine on online multi-player. If you liked games like Gears of War and Binary Domain this will definitely be in your wheelhouse. Now would I pick this up day one? I'm not sure just yet but I definitely want to play more of it, if any of you guys want to play it on Live or PSN just look me up.

It is pretty rough these days for new IP's at the tail end of the life cycle and it's even worse amidst the next gen console announcements.

I personally don't mind seeing new IP's such as this Defiance, and Dishonored being released for current gen consoles. I'm not going to be buying a new next gen console for a while and the current gen continues to have a large installed user base so games like GTA, Assassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell will still do well. Under the radar stuff like this it though? Pretty tricky.

It's especially difficult when there's not a whole lot of awareness/marketing muscle surrounding the new game but given that the summer season usually has dry gaming spells this could still do well even amidst the unusual releases of the big name games coming out this summer but we'll see.

Comes out May 28th btw.

Their track record isn't too bad with me, I've liked their Ratchet and Clank stuff even though they kind of went overboard on doing so many. Never played Resistance.

The first PS2 game sucked. The other ones are good, but mostly all the same.

Resistance is shit.

Well give the demo a try at least, if you don't like it then cool but hey at least you tried it.

I know that Fuse's timing is pretty bad and that nobody has any expectations for it because it's a new IP and on the surface it just seems like generic 3rd person shooter but it does have strategy to it, is pretty fun, and the characters/graphics pop in their own way. I'm usually one to just wait games like this out but it could be one of the few full game purchases for me this summer since it looks to have quite a lot of replay value and the demo whet my appetite, I'm just hoping to see some early reviews before I go out to fully commit.

Let me know when you want to play it on Live, you can upgrade the characters with each playthrough which will carry over into the full release so it gets better for me with every run.
