Glad we finally have a release date for this, less than two weeks after the release of Rayman Legends. September should be a great month.
It has Puppeteer, GTAV, Killzone: Mercenary, and Ys: MoC, so it certainly should.
Definitely a worthwhile Wii U exclusive, especially during an insanely dry spell.
That looks SO good, might have to get a WiiU eventually.
I'm with pineapple on this one.
I read that as "two other titties"
This seems like a decent start to a hopefully good holiday lineup.
Some new images.

Super Psyched for this one.
Hot link fail.
I'm super psyched to turn on my Wii U for a reason other than streaming video.
Here's the link

First 20 minutes
Game is looking crazy good.
It continues to look like a blast, including that song in the background. Neat intro.

This is actually the first game Hideki Kamiya has directed that features Japanese voice acting (!) Of course, as usual, the game contains English voice acting as well.
We’ve actually gone and included both the Japanese and English voice track in the game so that players can choose the one they prefer. How’s that for service, eh?
And that’s not all! We also included Japanese subtitles for when you choose English audio! So if you set the game to English audio + Japanese subtitles, you’ll not only see the English text in the speech bubble, but you’ll also get Japanese subtitles displayed vertically at the top right of the screen.
It's not ridiculous sentai goodness without the oddball japanese voices
This game just keeps looking better and better.

Love that Viewtiful Joe reference in her dialog
I'm not impressed by this game.
There's going to be a ND dedicated to just this game on Friday.
Not a huge fan of action games where you have to deal with more than one character.
I don't think you ever control more than one character. The group acts as a single entity, like a katamari made of superheroes that turns into a big punching fist. Or something.
They turn into TNL, get bored, and fall apart. /game. BETTER COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER THAN NEW GAMES TO WOW ME, GUYS. OTHERWISE YOUR SUNK
I'm updating this thread just to rustle Yoshi's jimmies. Now the TNL thrill meter for W101 has gone up a tick.

Unite morphs! Pretty much covers how guarding and dodging will work, as well as the millions of shits you can turn into during the course of the game.
Even the Platinum games that didn't immediately wow me (Vanquish) got me to fall in love with it with enough time. I'm pretty sure Wonderful 101 is gonna be something I have to own.
Europe get's a demo for this in like 30 minutes. Still no mention of NA, NoA can't be that fucking stupid can they.
I'm pretty sure they get the game like 20 days before we do. Still though...no reason not to release the same demo here :D
Here is today's 20 minute long Nintendo Direct for The Wonderful 101. Hosted by Mr Kamiya hisself
So supposedly it's coming to NA (the demo) but no date. It'll probably be 20 days from now since they get the game like 20 days before us. Fucking stupid.
I was wrong, now they're claiming some time today for NA. I hope that's so.
Here's a link to the 7 minute trailer at 60fps.

Demo's up on the US eShop.
I got to play through the demo once so far. There's a lot of depth here, and for the first 10 minutes or so it's a lot to take in. Once you get the hang of things though it's a lot of fun. One of the larger size guns you can form is a Super Scope 6.
Yeah there's a bit to learn, there's an internal logic to the game you just need to get used to. But then it turns into a game that's basically Bayonetta and Pikmin's love child. The options are pretty nice. Lots of control schemes, screen settings, and voice/text options.
Iwata Asks: The Wonderful 101: Hideki Kamiya
Interesting read as usual, includes some info by Kamiya on the development of Resident Evil 2, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe.
Also, the demo is a blast. I want this game.
I actually find there's more Okami influence than Pikmin. You don't really need to micromanage your little W100s, not the way you would in Pikmin, but the game does have you drawing shapes to accomplish things, with even drawing cirlces around things to bring them back to life. Very Okami like IMHO.
I dunno, climb attacks reminded me a lot of Pikmin. Also that your max size is 100 heroes.
Eh, I don't think it's enough to make the similarities between it and Pikmin. Climb attacks are just the general "punch" even if looks like a Pikmin thing. Like shinjohn said, you only need to ever worry about the leader, so the micromanagement of Pikmin doesn't actually exist. Which is for the best!
One of the attacks makes your people latch onto the enemies latch onto the enemies. Like Pikmin. It's Pikmin.
It's one attack though, and there's no managing different types of people to do different things. There's a mild Pikmin influence there, but the Okami and Viewtiful Joe influences are much stronger/deeper.

I really like the idea of Custom Blocks. It's almost like a custom talent build for your team. There's a block that lets you do SFIII/Revengeance style parries, a block that slows time when you dodge, one that drops a mine when you dodge, etc. Combining blocks that work well together can produce some stupid OP playstyles.
Just like Pikmin. Might as well call it "Pikmin 101".
I'm going to cry when Pikmin 101 bombs. The game looks and plays really nice.
This Edge review is exactly in line with my personal gut feeling about the game based on trailers and previews. However, Eurogamer liked it more, though it's an individual I don't recognize writing.
Every review complains about the touchpad. How disappointingly expected.
Do we have a term yet for the Wii U's version of "waggle"?
I will be fine with drawing with the right thumb stick. In the demo I don't really have much trouble with Sword, Fist, or Gun, but I don't know how complex the drawing is for Hammer, Bomb or Claw.
I still have zero doubt that I will adore this game.
You could call it "Yoshi" since it's a nagging problem that pops up every time someone has anything to say about the Wii U.
When I played the demo I ended up using the second analog for most of the powers, except the circle to recruit people. Sometimes you have to make a chain or people long enough to reach a rooftop or what have you, and it's possible to start drawing a line on the gamepad that won't quite reach by the time your finger gets to the edge of the screen.
Drawing on the gamepad was a little awkward, but I was having the same issues in the Rayman demo months ago so I figure it's the tablet. I'm not used to having to put pressure on touchscreens when I'm not using a stylus because I don't like in the past I guess.
Iwata asks: The Wonderful 101 Development Staff
Insightful read in the development process, check it out.
They mention that there is a special hidden character from another game.
bayonetta will be interesting in w101
Sounds like she has a hair unite morph
Kamiya: Do you eat shit?
Iwata: (laughs)
PG_kamiya: ask your mom RT @kawaiiwata: How is w101 coming along @PG_kamiya
it's relevant because that is what he'd actually say
Good video on the drawing system
The 101 is how many copies it sold.
Wish they gave it better marketing the game deserves to sell a shit ton. Based on the Demo it seems like it's going to be awesome.
That number looks about right. Did they expect every Wii U owner to buy two copies?Quote:
[Wii U] The Wonderful 101 (Nintendo, 08/22/13) – 5,258 (New)
I'm not sure I understand your comment. 5k is a long long way from the install base ceiling.
Edit: Oh, I bet that was an install base joke. Never mind the cheerless robot, people. Move along, move along.
bingo.
That's a shame it seems to be a damn good game, and quite different from the other titles out there. It reminds me of the kind of quirky shit that only Japan makes that I miss from generations past.
I would buy it if Donkey Kong were $60. Would've bought two if Donkey Kong were $70.
I hate admitting when Yoshi is right, but here we are :(
It's clear that the vast majority of game players don't want this old timey shit. They want real looking people interacting with a real looking environments and doing real looking things.
That said, I'd think there are still enough "blue sky gamers" around to support the few releases a year that do attempt to cater to what we say we want.
But it gets proven over and over to not be the case, at all.
It's a nice stupid, though. It's the kind of stupid that sentai hero shows would be if they were actually enjoyable to watch. *kicks can* u__u People don't appreciate that kind of stupid anymore, unless it's Mario or not $60.
i hate price arguments, but $60 for a video game hurts every time i pay it. $50 is a lot! $40 is a Nice Price. Nintendo, now that you've admitted $350 is too much for your system with Monita and $60 games are too much unless they're Mario, please lower the price.
I think the demo scared more people off than it attracted too, since the game actively makes fun of you if you pick the easier difficulties, and it really doesn't make much sense until you've played it long enough to figure out what's going on (which is actually a little longer than the campaign of the demo allows), but when it clicks, it's really great.
Wow, so i wasn't paying attention, but this comes out the week of GTAV? Is this punishment for Kamiya and Inaba?
Platinum games have never really sold all that well. This is a tough game in a basically unknown/untested genre using lots of color and stylization that hearkens back to the sentai days that only Kamiya and those of his ilk really reminisce about. But that's just aesthetics. It's solid, but tough, and for a system that has like 1.5 million users. It was doomed from the start, but it will never stop me from liking it for what it is.
EDIT: I think that, eventually, this will be one of those games that stays a cult favorite and whose quality is recognized but not really desired until well after the system, or any games released in a similar time span, have lived past their time.
The WiiU isn't the PS2, so it can't lean on a huge userbase to sell inaccessible games beyond the niche. Some games can do OK in a niche but this was too high budget.
oh, beaten
Right, we suck.
If this game had starred the Mad Midget Five, it would've sold a million billion units.
I think I would get this if I had a system and all that stuff.
FFVII, Mortal Kombat 3, Samurai Showdown III, and Grandia were all first party PSX games, then?
That doesn't sound right.
For me it's very simple. I want to play it as soon as it's available, so I will pay whatever price I need to in order to do so. Sounds selfish but whether or not it's about supporting the developer doesn't factor into it as much: I know I'm just a drop in the bucket. I appreciate the game's creator and of course hope it would succeed, but I know that I won't make the difference on whether or not it is successful.
i c.
Same week as GTAV? Why would anyone do that!?
Ugh. I hate to be the guy who doesn't support this kind of thing, but my budget is tapped. Dammit, I really want to play this but GTAV wins hands-down. I'm going to feel guilty about buying this for $20, post-Christmas.

This came out today, if you own a Wii U and did not buy it you're part of the problem.
This game just oozes charm out of every orifice. Outside of the big things like combat systems and controls, it's the little things, like making fun use of the gamepad controller at every turn by printing out little receipts for your when you buy a skill or item at the Wonder Shop, or the puzzles/fights that make use of the gamepad in some unique way, or using it as like a mini control center during normal play.
Ben Kuchera said it was hard to play and badly designed.
Sorry.
I might buy it despite not having a Wii U.
I might, too.
PeeVee mentioned the Target sale next week. I might use that to get this and Luigi U so Kamiya doesn't cry.
