Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.
Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.
Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."
"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe," said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. "I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."
The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.
Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.
Wish it wasn't called Rebels, but otherwise yes sir. Also I want that office. Or more accurately the stuff that's IN that office.

If they can really make it look like a moving McQuarrie painting, each episode could be half an hour of the emperor picking his nose and it would still be the best thing ever.

I hope they don't fall into the same trap the EU books did and focus on Han, Luke, Chewie and Leia as the only people who can still have adventures as the Galaxy Police. Their stories are done, get some new shit going.

Hoping for Alderaanian nobility squabbling/plotting. Might as well get some use out of that setting before it goes kaboom.

They repurposed the story of 1313 and it now has Jar Jar starring as a rough and tough bounty hunter.

Well if the pattern holds, it's going to be great, then be inexplicably thrown into a prolonged schedule-dicking purgatory in its second season, then unceremoniously canceled for a vastly inferior alternative.

I like the McQuarrie Chewie alien. Barbie Fett is a dumb idea, but hopefully the writers will do something worthwhile with her. Don't really like that there's a Jedi in the cast, even if he's ostensibly forsaken the Jedi ways for his own survival, but I guess the idea of a Star Wars story that focuses entirely on Rebel soldiers and/or Han-style fringe heroes with no Jedi at all is just too far outside the box. But come on, the question at this point is, who didn't survive Order 66?

Well, the galaxy is a big fuckin place. And Jedi are whackjobs who like to head off into the bush to find enlightenment and shit. You know for a fact that 2 survived based on the original trilogy alone. It's not that shocking that a few more might be alive after the order.

And finally...
Now that we've seen the whole team... I like it, even if there is the potential for annoyance with Sabine. (People seem to have faith in Filoni and Weissman based on their track record with female characters, so fingers crossed she comes off better in the actual show.) Odd how the videos for Kanan and Hera seem to describe both of them as the leader, though. :P
I just realized... Freddie Prinze Jr. looks about the right age (even if he really isn't) to play Kanan in the new movies, if they end up having him survive the war...
All of these names (Ezra, Kanan, Sabine, Hera) are super overt in kind of a rad way. I'd have been stoked to compare the references to the characters if this were on in my day. My nephews will be googling this stuff furiously. Plus, naming someone "Kanan," however overt it is, is still more subtle than I-III's hamfisted Judeo-Christian stuff (I GOT DIS BABBY WITOUT NO FUCKIN DO U GET IT)
Do like!

Thanks for posting that, Geo. I missed it the other night live and forgot to find it online.

edit2: The blue haired kid is more annoying than the Skywalker family. Even in the trailer I was rooting for the TIE Fighter to vaporize him.

Part of what made the original Clone Wars cartoon great was its brevity. I wish the follow up series wasn't, well, a standard series. Could use some heavy editing to make it watchable.

The season ended. They're going to do at least one more. (Rumor has it that's it, and then they're going to move on to a new show, set between movies VI and VII. Filoni does say he's got the rest of the run plotted out now, so who knows.)

I finally got to see the season finale last night, and it was terrific. I like that they brought back Maul as someone who hates EVERYONE, and I liked the way they teased Ezra's future by him opening the Sith holocron. The best part was the Ahsuka/Vader duel, which ties so nicely into Clone Wars. I love Vader, and the fact that James Earl Jones is voicing him in the series makes me all nerd-giddy. The lightsaber duel was great, and it really opened some new directions for the characters (Is Ahsuka dead? Where did Maul go? Will Kanan ever see again. I got a bit of an ESB vibe from how low things ended for the heroes. Awesome stuff.

I'm happy Thrawn is being integrated into the new canon, but I'm a little worried using him as the big bad for a season of a kids' show where the good guys have to win every week won't do him justice. If a show like this is gonna use a character of his stature, he should be handled they way they have Vader, not the Grand Inquisitor.
16 Jul 2016, 11:38 PM
Error
He's probably not going to make an appearance until halfway into the season, and he'll be in the shadows as the rebels face defeats, causing them to have to mount a raid to get those new Ywings they show in the trailer.
They still have to deal with Maul and Ezra, and Sabine with the Mandalorians.
I just hope they end his run by being given command of a fleet and told to go conquer some portion of the outer rim by the Emperor, as punishment for failing to stop the Rebellion or something. I know it's not canon anymore but I just want Heir to the Empire to be the real continuation of Jedi for a little while longer.

The finale was kinda meh after the much-more-affecting death of Kanan episode. Glad they wrote out Ezra and Thrawn in a way that explains their absence during the OT without killing them off and leaves the door open for their future return, though. Also glad that if they *just had to* introduce time travel into Star Wars, at least they destroyed the thing that made it possible within the same story. But of course there are probably who knows how many more time travel temples waiting to be found on other obscure planets. :\ And on a downer note... Hera and Kanan's kid has to be either dead or one of Kylo's "Knights of Ren" underlings by the time of TFA, right? The latter is fitting, considering his namesake - yes, Filoni confirmed it's spelled Jacen.
