Has Mad Catz gotten any better over the years? Aside from some arcade sticks (which weren't all that great) I've not used them since PS1 era, and they were synonymous with garbage back then.

Their arcade sticks are a de facto standard at least in the US. I can't speak to anything else they make though.

I thought they were a standard case that everyone then bought new sticks and buttons for (meaning, in my mind, that they weren't all that great).

There are two versions. The Tournament Edition is great out of the box, though I did replace its Sanwa parts with Seimitsu ones for shooter purposes.

I dug their Saturn-style SF4 pads. Actually they've kind of transitioned to a more boutique peripheral-maker since they doubled down on the FGC stuff. Used to be they were the go-to name for any cheap accessory at major retailers, now they don't even have a presence at most. It's all PDP and Power A now.

Sanwa is perfectly adequate. People were happy swapping stock parts for theirs before Seimitsu came along.

Even the non-TE stick is pretty good.

I've used I think 3 new non-TE sticks, and they ranged from really bad to just bad. I think its really random on the quality which isn't a good sign.

Eventually though you have to move the stick about 75% of the way toward a direction before it registers, which isn't good. Technically it still works, but its not good quality. The buttons are okay, but noticeably worse than sanwas.

About mad catz, they aren't the shithouse they used to be. I feel like once they starting making the Guitar Hero and RB controllers, they were the 'best' on the market for specialty controllers and changed strategy to improving the quality of their stuff.

Mad Catz is perfectly fine these days, way better than the rubberized Dreamcast controllers of the past.

Their RetroCon and MicroCon controllers were well designed, but the quality was dodgy.
Making a functioning arcade stick is hardly an achievement, especially considering the fact that all of the controls are manufactured by another company.
After several iterations, they've managed to make a problem-free shell and PCB for the TE sticks.

The only good Madcatz sticks use parts made by Sanwa and not Madcatz themselves. Clearance SE sticks make great shells for custom joysticks though.

Now just "MOJO," games pulled straight from Google Play

$250, and it looks like the OnLive console. I'm curious about the PC streaming.

I'm curious how DOA it's going to be.

In some ways, the more DOA it is, the better. Since it uses Google Play and PC streaming for its games, a failure wouldn't reduce its library at all, and it would make the hardware cheaper.

The OUYA at least has price going for it. There's no way on Earth Random Family X is going to buy this at $250 with the Wii U giving you two Mario games for $50 more.

If it came with two TE sticks I'd go for it.

Still waiting for it to hit the bin with the Shield but at least I got a Shield for free from nVidia...

I MIGHT pick one of these up for super-cheap, but I kind of doubt it since the OUYA already ticks every box I'm looking forward with an Android system, and actually runs its own games too! This thing would be remotely appealing at its current price point if it had its own store where you could buy games that made use of its power.

I don't understand why they even fuck with lassoing this thing to the Android market. Madcatz has good relationships. Just make a deal with say... Capcom and SNK, pack a TE stick in with it, toss the back-catalogs up with netplay, and the entire fighting game community buys one and you've cornered a market.

$150 for the thing, $30 a month recurring for full access to libraries plus netplay, holy shit alright. Make a CvS3 for it, drop the mic.

Android is a garbage barge.

"Interesting" might not be the right word for this, but all of the Ouya's content is now coming to the MOJO as part of Ouya Everywhere.

Why bother with a hardware upgrade when your competitor has done it for you?

I don't get the impression from OUYA that they've gotten past the "throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks" approach.

I seem to know a lot of Ouya owners who have played it exactly twice since it came out.

Jeremy is keeping them afloat single-handedly.

Purchasing a second controller could be called 'optimism'.
