Call of Duty is the new measure of hardcore. How many hours you spend in Skyrim is. How much story is in a game and how Serious Business it is. Since we all know, games have to be Serious Business to be legitimate. That's all the new measure of hardcore to the audience that the market treats as hardcore.
Not how good you are in a shmup or platformer. Not in how fast you can finish a game (which used to mean getting so good at it you could clear one in 20 minutes). Not in any of things we grew up valuing. It's more likely that a new, good, well designed platformer will be castrated as being casual than taken seriously. Unless it's a masochist platformer like Super Meat Boy. In which case, it's not seen as hardcore, but a niche title that the core plays for a week, say they like it because the press does, then moves on.
