Battle mode ruled. A much needed change of pace from just racing.
MK64 Block Fort was the jam. The original was ok. Every other battle mode has been trash. I won't miss it.
During the 36 minute Nintendo Direct there was some part of it where Peach or Rosalina on bike passed the Koopa Troopa and he did the same thing, it was funny as shit to watch.

I kinda felt Mario Kart fatigue while playing 7, but Nintendo games have no business being this sexy. Probable day one purchase.
I finally got to play the demo at Target. It looks good, aside from the jaggies. The two courses I played (San Francisco, Cake) felt really short and too wide. I miss the ability to link multiple powersildes together with a quick hop ala Sonic Transformed. The karts moved really slowly, but I'm guessing the demo was just set to 50cc.
Basically, it's just the same old Mario Kart. Definitely not a system seller. I'm fine continuing to play Sonic Transformed until Smash Bros. comes out. Or if they put out a bundle for $200 with Mario Kart, I'd consider that.
$300+ isn't worth it in a world where Sonic Transformed already exists.
Interesting. I'm disappointed the Sonic Transformed comparison hasn't been made more, because that is a better game than any prior Mario Karts, and it's not all that close.
When you talk about linking powerslides, do you mean snaking? Good riddance to that shit if it's gone. That would be a major positive for this one.
Let's say you've got an "S curve" coming up.
In Sonic Transformed, you can powerslide left then quickly hop and powerslide right in one smooth motion, without breaking your boost chain.
In Mario Kart 8, you'd have to slide left, let go of your boost, then slide right to start a new boost chain. If your initial slide ended with a bonus boost, that extra acceleration forward could fuck up your second powerslide and send you off the course. Plus there's a slight delay in the animations going out of one powerslide and starting another.
Oh, yuck. I loved that left to right switch in Sonic.
Sounds like Sonic is still the best kart racer and that I should go back to playing it more
I still need to get the Ryo Hazuki DLC. I don't think it's been on sale yet? Or if it has, I just missed the event.
The Metal Sonic/OutRun Bay DLC was great.

My only gripe with Sonic is common with these kind of games - rubber-band AI. Made all the worse because it feels weapons help far less when you're knocked back. I love the way they do powersliding, but in the higher rank races where it's required to hit that stuff expertly AND you could get hammered out of 1st by bad luck? It's annoying.
I played the demo and thought it was awesome. But then again, I have never really played any of the old ones.
I saw the console bundles in the case at Target at lunch. There were only two in there, which makes me think they might have actually broken the street date and sold some.
People on GAF are posting a ton of pictures of broken street dates at Walmart, Target, and Sears.

They really changed up most of the old returning tracks. They almost feel like new tracks with how much was changed.

I think jyoung's impressions from the demo unit were spot on. This might be the best Mario Kart, but it isn't as good as Transformed. The air and water parts are nowhere near as important, the courses don't change at all, and they even left in the annoying ass coins from MK7 that cause you not to get three stars if you get hit with lightning at the finish line of the fourth race of a cup, despite fishing first on all four races.
The one major advantage it does have is that progression is solely through racing and not all that other BS like drift challenges, boost challenges, etc. The reviews clearly are getting the typical 1-2 point bump for having a Nintendo logo on the case, which has been bullshit for 20+ years.

You can still 3 star a cup if you don't finish with 10 coins. The only requirement that I've seen so far is finishing 1st in all 4 races. It's nice that it doesn't really take much time to unlock all the characters. I never played Battle at all in a MK until I started dating my GF. Since we would play online with her brother and grandfather and we'd make the brother happy from time to time and play it. For the hell of it I played a couple of games of MK8 Battle online and personally I liked that they were taking place in the regular courses. It gave me a chance to explore the courses more, I found it more fun than the shitty layouts that were in MKWii for battle.
I think it uses the Mario Kart Wii style hidden scoring system, where you can have less than 10 coins per race, but how many times you've been hit with items, how many out of bounds and how far ahead you've won by are all taken into account. Which is bullshit when you have a rubber band AI session at 150cc.

It very well could be that way. I just know I got 10 coins on all the races in the 50cc mushroom cup last night and still only got 2 stars.
Sonic Transformed was solid and I had some fun with it, but I've done two courses on this and already this is so endearing.

I like the game, but there is no damn way it's a 10/10.
Mechanics wise this game is solid and atmosphere matters man. I'd rather race the characters against each other in these environments any day.
Online is pretty enjoyable, and a total clusterfuck unless you're way out front or in last place. Seems I've only seen maybe 3-4 blue shells since last night. I am 100% OK with this.
Also the fact I can be downstairs and playing on the gamepad blows my mind.
It's a shame that there's still no single player content in these Mario Kart games besides Grand Prix and Time Trials.
Adding some special events like the World Tour mode from Sonic Transformed would have helped this game's single player replay value tremendously.

There are two factors to stats - the character (which determines a baseline stat) and parts (which alter the baseline). If you push (+) while picking parts you can see how stats change.
