I've been playing Sega Superstars Tennis on 360 lately, and I really don't understand the negative reviews it got.
It's basically just a crazy version of Virtua Tennis dressed up in Sega nostalgia, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
The 'control' style characters seem much better than the rest, and there are a few odd UI annoyances, but other than that I have no complaints.
Never played the mascot one, but Virtua Tennis 4 and Virtua Tennis 2009 sucked.
I've only played the DC games and VT3, but I thought they were great.
Yeah VT3 was the best.
The series double faulted after that.
I didn't play 3, but I played the fuck out of 4 on the Vita. It's not as good as the Dreamcast games and is less arcadey, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
No more NCAA football games ever, then, awesome
