I know not enough people on TNL play sports games to warrant separate threads for each of them, but I think there is enough interest to make a thread combining them all compelling.
To set some ground rules, this is intended for sports such as baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, boxing, etc. and not for motorsports games, which often do get their own threads, or "sports entertainment" garbage like wrasslin'.
To kick us off (pun intended), here is the E3 trailer for Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2014:
I've been waiting for a sale on PES13 on Steam, but at this point it's tough to not just wait for '14 instead., unless '13 goes 75% off or something next month.

Is this series any good? What are the main differences from FIFA (hopefully a better UI)?

A few! And I'll be buying more this year than in a while. Heck, I'm even buying a used copy of NHL 14 for the very likely Brodeur cover. I've been thinking of doing a shadow box for my office with The Show '07 (Wright), NCAA Football 2K2 (Brees), and some others where it will fit.

There is a legion of fans for each, so I think which you like better comes down to taste. For me it comes down to not giving EA any money. jyoung could probably go into more detail, as I think he reviews a lot of sports games.

I agree with Yoshi. WWE 2K14 deserves it's own thread. We shouldn't lump it in with lowly soccer games. Good call Yosh!

I think some of the recent Tiger Woods games give you the timed meter option.

In terms of sims, I think Tiger is king, pending the previously mentioned 2K contender. For arcade, I'd recommend Hot Shots.

Hot Shots is still my favorite, but I think Tiger 2005 for the original Xbox is the pinnacle of that series. Everything after that was either one or many steps back.

There's a HotShots for PS3? I've seen HS2 on the PS Store. More digging needed!

HotShots Golf on the Vita is awesome and it only costs $10. It's a must-own for that system.
For PES vs. FIFA, PES has way better AI and plays a much better single player game of soccer. But PES doesn't have all the team and league licenses FIFA has, and FIFA blows it away in multiplayer.
FIFA is also coming to next-gen this year, whereas PES is staying on PC, PS3 and 360.

I'm getting it used very cheap in maybe a year for an art project I've been wanting to do for a while. The NHL hasn't seen revenue from me since 2009. EA hasn't since 2011. Neither of those things is changing for a cover.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, that little punk Chicharito is going to be on the North American version of FIFA 14, alongside Messi. I didn't even realize he also played for ManU, since I don't follow the EPL closely. That's probably another reason to not like him. Of course, when I get PES 2014 from Steam, it won't matter who Konami puts on the cover.
29 Jun 2013, 11:55 PM

Chicharito is nowhere near as good as Messi. The only reason they did that is to drum up sales from Mexico supporters inside North America.
This is the equivalent of putting Adrian Peterson and Matt Forte on the same cover.

I'd LOVE to get FIFA on The Bone day 1 but my recollection of sports games at launch is that:
1) they look pretty
2) they play poorly (controls, balance, etc)
Am I remembering wrong?
30 Jun 2013, 05:22 PM

This generation's launch sports games were awful. Madden and NBA Live in particular were disasters.
At least with FIFA, I think EA has learned from their mistakes this gen. FIFA next gen looked amazing at E3.
Madden still looks pretty sketchy and NBA Live hasn't shown much yet.
30 Jun 2013, 05:46 PM

It looked amazing because they didn't actually show the game. They were just "in-game assets."

Yosh, that's what I'm worried about.
And next gen Madden won't be avail until the season's 2/3rds over. That's usually when's Madden playtime starts to falter anyway, so I'll stick w/360 for that.
As previously mentioned, this Brodeur cover will finally let me complete something I've been mentally drawing up for quite a while. I'm going to do a shadow box for my office with the following games:

So my experience with PES 2013 is exactly the same as my experience with recent fighting games. It's so unnecessarily complicated that I can't even get the fucking tutorial finished. There is zero reason a soccer game needs to use every button on the controller, much less combinations of three at a time that require uncomfortable contortions.
20 Jul 2013, 06:57 PM

I agree. It's a shame that no soccer game besides the Xbox 360 Indie game Fitba has offered a simple dual joystick control scheme -- left stick to move, right stick to kick the ball.
The first major soccer game to implement dual analog controls gets my money. Until then, I'll just keep playing Fitba.
New Madden demo is pretty damn good. I wonder how the next gen game will turn out.

Old post or no, this is the only soccer game I love...

EA certainly has perfected the MO of "if you can't actually make a better game, go after all the licenses." Considering they haven't offered an optimal game that actually had competition since about 1995, I guess they're left with little choice.

In other news, I Redboxed Madden 25 for 360 tonight. I can barely see any improvement from Madden 09. Seriously. I know it's better, but it's such tiny steps forward for the last few years. And I'd like to be excited for next-gen, but sports games usually suck ass on the first 2 years of a new console.

It's Sanchez. But in "connected career" mode you can play as Curtis Martin, and there is no Testaverde in there anywhere. I even checked the file share for Legends rosters with him included, but no dice.

Learn to Madden. Shotgun, 15-yard drop back, heave into post routes on downs 1-4. The only other play in the game, I think, is fake punt.
The only defensive play is Ask Madden.

I've been playing Sega Superstars Tennis on 360 lately, and I really don't understand the negative reviews it got.
It's basically just a crazy version of Virtua Tennis dressed up in Sega nostalgia, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
The 'control' style characters seem much better than the rest, and there are a few odd UI annoyances, but other than that I have no complaints.

It always struck me as outrageous that they would be like, "no real players!" and then have a guy that looks exactly like the real player, has the same number as the real player, and plays in the same position as the real player in the game. That was never going to pass legal muster and I'm so happy they got called out.

It certainly sounds good; sports games are very complex these days and there is something to be said for the back-to-basics approach. I played a lot of sports games back then but kind of drifted away.
That said, considering MLB is making it, is Bud Selig an executive producer or something? That can't end well.
