Which System Still Has the Best Exclusive Lineup?

I want people to think all the way back to the home version of Pong and its zero remaining exclusives. Which system still has the best set of exclusives in 2013?

In other words, since Super Mario World has been released on GBA and Wii, it is no longer an SNES exclusive. Similarly, since Silent Hill has been released on PS3, it is no longer a PS1 exclusive. On the other hand, I don't think first party backward compatibility should work against a system, so the SMS, DS, PS1, etc. don't have that working against them. Also, exclusive home ports of arcade games count. Finally, the PC can't count as a system for obvious reasons, but it should be considered for exclusivity.

Please also list the key exclusives that led to your choice.

I am leaning a certain direction, but I haven't finished thinking through it yet, so I'll reserve my choice for probably later this afternoon.

I vote for the Super A'Can.
Just about everything on older systems worth a damn has been re-released.
I'd have to go Playstation 2 just due to the overwhelming size of the library and newness (not yet everything has been mined for PSN or XBLA yet). Though a huge chunk of the western library was multiplat, there are a bunch of japanese and late releases that weren't put out on Xbox and Gamecube.
I'm not going to get all list-o-mania. Everyone here is familiar enough with the system to form their own lists.

Off the top of my head the PS1 seems like the right choice.

Sorry, I took "On the other hand, I don't think first party backward compatibility should work against a system" to include straight ports like the PSN PS1 releases since it's the same as putting the discs in the system.

In that case, most of the best of the PS1 & PS2's library will probably be out there digitally in the next 10 years if Sony keeps on like they have been.

And in my first draft, I listed PS1 or PS2; but finally went with PS2 due to lack of PSN presence.

It's hard to argue with the konami/capcom output.

Personally I'd go with the original Game Boy as my favorite system ever with my personal favorite exclusives. But that's purely nostalgia on my part and I understand that most people hate those games now and would not enjoy the vast majority of them.

My opinion is that there are really only two defend-able choices, and the SFC sure as hell isn't one of them. The reason I didn't post right away is that I am still parsing those two. Also, my "superfami-kick" has consisted of two games, one of which is not exclusive. ;)

I'm not the slacker I once was. The custom status hasn't changed since i signed up, and it's not going to anytime soon.

When I think about a system's library I generally think about "exclusives around time of release", sometimes considering exclusive or clearly definitive home ports of arcade games. Ports to other platforms way late make this really tricky.

colecovision coulda been a contender.

Commodore 64. A lot of C64 games did have other versions on other systems, but they're often so different that they can't really be considered ports. Paradroid, Uridium, the first and third Last Ninja games (the second had a reasonably competent port on NES), Mayhem in Monsterland, Project Firestart, Katakis, Iridis Alpha, and the list goes on and on...

The two systems that I viewed as defend-able were SSJN and Timber's choice, the PS2, and my choice, which SSJN predicted, the NES/Famicom. What it came down to for me is that one of the PS2's greatest strengths is its compilations: Capcom Classics Collections, Sega Arcade and Genesis Collection, SNK Anthologies and Collections, Taito Legends, etc. But almost literally none of that is exclusive, as even those compilations came to PC, PSP, Xbox, and or Wii. So if this were one of those desert island threads, the PS2 may wind up winning, but it doesn't hold up to this set of exclusives for me (sparing you the Japanese titles):

Believe it or not, I cut a lot from my have/want list to get it down to that reasonable number. The damn GBA cost it Strider, Mighty Final Fight, and Bionic Commando with that strange compilation. I almost forgot about that one.

While typing this, I decided to prove the PS2's relative weakness. Here is what I am thinking for it, admittedly without the aid of as comprehensive a want list:

• Everblue 2
• Final Fantasy XII
• Gradius IV and V
• R-Type Final
• Raw Danger
• Rule of Rose
• Skygunner
• ThunderForce VI
• Transformers
• Twinkle Star Sprites: LPP

Perhaps the differentiation would be how many JRPGs you bring in. I'm waffling on counting SMT games I've never played but know are good for example. But based on the lists of what I own and what I actively would like to acquire, I'd say the Famicom wins out based on quantity, even though the PS2 has a couple stronger single games, e.g. Gradius V. Recently losing God Hand and Shattered Soldier to PSN didn't help the PS2.

edit2: I left out all the PS2 Cave ports. Damn it. That one might be a WIP.

i could easily double that list, with getting into jrpgs. with those I could triple if not quadruple it.

Since that was kind of the point, get on it. I'd frankly be curious to see if it's stuff I a. forgot, b. disagree with, or c. don't know about.

This is how I feel. Like, say SMW got ported to all of those other systems. I feel like those other systems can't use it as an "exclusive" game since it was ported from a different system.

They can't either. It's not an exclusive for anyone anymore. That's the whole point. To really simplify this, if you have a Wii or Wii U, a PS3, and a PC, what else do you really need to still have? It's not quite that simple, but it's not too far off.

edit: Someday hopefully the 3DS and Vita completely make all other portables obsolete in the same way. Get on that Lynx store, Sony!

The Wii/PS2 has some of the best advantages when it comes to exclusive libraries that haven't already been either converted to HD or uploaded on the PSN network.

This would take a lot of research though if you wanted to make some sort of round up.

I hate to be the negative one here because it seems that Yoshi is just curious but it seems to me that: A) Yoshi just wants to be able to call more games as non- exclusives or B) There are no exclusive games with the exception of systems too powerful to be emulated by PCs because all of these VC/PSN/XBLA re-releases are just rom dumps.

A) I call spades spades.
B) I can tell you with certainty that the three systems nominated can all be emulated by PCs.

edit: Speaking only for myself, what it comes down to is that I don't want to ever go back to where I was circa 2000 with every system ever made hooked up and games everywhere. So in prioritizing what I need to own and have set up, this discussion very much matters. Since legality matters to me, the line needs to be drawn between VC/PSN and all of the PC emulators. I haven't even bought a Famicom cart or disc of anything available on VC without first buying the VC version to give the publisher their cut.

I'm not sure about the amount available on PSN, but PS1 seems to be an easy choice. NES as well. A list for the systems would be a fun project...for Yoshi.

I have lists for what I care about for several systems, including NES, SNES, PS1, and PS2, but that is certainly nowhere near the complete list for each system. I would love nothing more than to one day have a database that captures the only and/or best place to play every game ever made.

Given the rules, I'd have to agree with the PS2 for reasons already stated, even though I've barely played mine compared to most other systems.

If we ignored VC/PSN rom dumps, the PC engine would be a strong contender. Just about the whole library was exclusives.

I really can't agree with the port criteria especially for any emulated ports. Have a look at any Mega Drive emulation and the sound is just so off that I can't consider them to be the same game. HD remakes are also guilty of not accurately portraying the source material such as with Anubis on the ZOE collection.

Also, since this is a US forum, I expect perspectives to be US-centric compared to someone from Europe or Japan so are you looking from a global or local view?

That's fair and kind of the point of the thread. It was intended to be a different take on the usual best system / desert island / etc. though from the pictures you have posted, I don't think space and storage concerns play as heavily into your thought process. ;)

Going by some framerate comparison videos out there, the PS2 averaged 54, the 360 averaged 39, and the PS3 31.

It'd be one thing if it was choppiness, I guess, but it's slowdown. Even the 360 version is really slow in comparison. I wouldn't play either HD release.

Thought about this for awhile and given the criteria, it will obviously be a Nintendo or Sony machine given their sales and dominance in the past. I'm not counting mobile phone/tablet ports. Initially I leaned towards the GBA but I think the DS is the winner here. Sorry, got lazy and didn't find images for the last 2 genres.

None of these are exclusive, but I applaud the unorthodox choice, and even the rest of your list isn't bad.

I personally think Shou is nuts, but it is interesting to see that the lone Japanese voice we have did align with where the whole country seems to be in terms of portable focus. And it does make some sense, since there is less porting of the portable games, at least until well after the fact on future portable generations (which won't exist anymore). I should have another look at the GBA, as Shou mentioned. The DS is extremely weak in genres I care about, but the GBA wasn't. It would all come down to which were ports vs. original.

Shou just made me want Legend of Kage 2 real bad. How was that game, TNL?

Also that is not how Contra 4 looks. My copy has a big ass gap between the screens where the game is ruined.

It's on the DSi e-shop only. It's pretty neat.

I think i'd go with DS as well, with the three Ace Attorney games that aren't ports and haven't been ported (even though one hasn't been localized), the Etrian games, Dark Spire, the first and third Layton games, DQIX, the Ouendan games, Four Heroes of Light, Chibi Robo: Park Patrol, and Pictobits off the top of my head. The SaGa remakes, the 3rd Chibi Robo, the 2nd Tingle game, and 7th Dragon would probably be on there if they were ever localized. I still have a shelf full of games i've either barely played or haven't played that have potential.


Wii and PS2 would be close, and 3DS could pass DS if it keeps going at the current pace.

The DS I can understand based on very specific tastes, but what the fuck are people smoking to mention the Wii?

That might actually give the 360 a run but not many other consoles. I'd personally take it over the DS though. Hell, I'd take Mario Galaxy 2 over the DS.

PSX would probably be my first pick, followed by PS2 and Turbografx/PCE. There's still a ton of excellent games that haven't made it onto PSN (EINHÄNDER PLZ). I loved the 32-bit era.

Of course, I'm crazy but given the whole port constraint, the more traditional candidates like the FC, SFC, PS1 and PS2 are definitely out as their best games can't be counted. Problem with the GBA is that many of its games are ports or were ported. Double Dragon Advance is undoubtedly one of my favorite games ever in the genre but from a quantity exclusive perspective, the DS wins. OG Gameboy was another format I considered but again, outside of expired licensed IP games, most famous titles were emu-ported or are ports themselves (see DuckTales, oh wait, now coming to current gen systems...).

Time kills. Any console with a good collection of exclusives in it's life span is going to lose them over time, with developers wanting to resell you old hits on new consoles. The exception to this is when you can't easily emulate/port a system's control input. Which is where I can see Finch saying the Wii, a lot of it's exclusives are going to stay that way simply because of the Wiimote. Just about any other consoles with great exclusives will in time see those ripped from it's bosom and ported to the latest system. Which makes picking a system based around the parameters set really fucking difficult.

If we were going by exclusives during their generation, my top picks would be, in no particular order, SNES, PS1, PS2, and GC. Under these parameters I have no fucking clue.

Mentioning the SNES and GC over the NES makes me think the parameters aren't the problem.

SNES > NES. Not so sure about the GC.....

Gamecube has the worst Mario game I've ever played. That's gotta count for something.
