Capcom Reorganization Results in Layoffs and Svensson's Departure

Svensson confirmed the news in a post on Facebook, writing “After nearly eight years, it is my final day at Capcom.”

“This departure is not a bad thing for me and it’s happening mostly because I’d suggested it during the early planning for today’s reorg,” Svensson explained. “While I wish the company the best of luck, Capcom is going in a different direction and the need for people at my level, relative to other areas, is lacking. Those who know me well, know that I’ve been ready to go for quite some time.”

“That said, I’m grateful for the opportunities Capcom has afforded me,” he continued. “I stayed as long as I did in large part for the potential I felt the company had (and still may have). But I also stayed for the people. I’ve worked alongside extremely talented and passionate folks in nearly every office we have. There are far too many to name but I really want to thank them all for the time we spent in the trenches together. I have truly enjoyed working with each and every one of you and would jump at the chance to do so again in the future.”

Svensson notes that “Sadly, I’m not the only one affected by the reorganization today” and mentions collecting resumes to help his former colleagues find new work. He added that “As for my future, I’ve got a few interesting opportunities from a variety of sectors in the gaming market already lined up for consideration. About the only thing they have in common is that the level of authority will be more in-line with the levels of responsibility than I’ve had the last several years and they all have the potential to disrupt the gaming space in exciting ways.”

If Capcom and other Japanese companies like Square Enix run themselves into the ground thanks to clueless morons in Japan, so be it. I'll feel the same way about it as I did with LucasArts earlier in the year, the result is completely deserved.

Also, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Svensson to do an amazing job heading another gaming company.

It's not Japan being stupid, it's Japan trying to do what they do best: emulate someone else to make a better product. I'm at work, so i'm less coherent than usual, but this problem isn't limited to Japan. Every large creative company is undergoing layoffs right now, and it's because someone isn't bringing in a shitload of money after spending a shitload of money. It's bad in all directions.

I have a bad feeling about Darkstalkers. Darkstalkers is not dead? It's more like "Is Darkstalkers not dead?" now. I bet it gets quietly canceled and we see footage of a beta version in 2014.

No more hopes here of seeing Warzard get on XBL/PSN. That one's likely a lost cause. :( At least D&D made it before this shit went down.

But it's the western style game that sells. Capcom can't do a "japanese" style game and expect to make bank on it.
Just look at Okami, Zack and Wiki, Devil May Cry, etc.

Their shit interpretations haven't sold though, so why keep spending large budgets on outsourcing your IPs and dragging them through the mud? Why not just say fuck it and do things internally and go back to what you can do. I'm sick of everyone chasing the same damn audience. I specially wish Japanese developers would go back to making games like they used to. At least for those of us that enjoy that. There needs to be some god damn diversity in the industry. I'd take another Viewtiful Joe, Okami, or Zack and Wiki over Bionic Commando any day of the week.

To be fair to Zack and Wiki, they didn't advertise, hell they barely even released it. At release that game was hard as hell to find.

it still looks pretty neat. You can still see the legends of mega men.

The text-image thing could be easily worked around with subtitles. The real reason it won't ever be brought over is "something something doesn't fit the market, localization costs" and it would probably bomb over here as well.

I just want to say that Resident Evil 6 was the worst Capcom game I have ever played. Only counting internally developed titles here, but Jesus fuck that is a terrible, terrible game. Instead of firing the director, they should pack him into a cannon and force him to do a series of QTEs to escape before it shoots him into the sun.
