Valley girl-ish accents seem to have become more common outside California in the last twenty years. It seems like a ton of teen to twenty somethings sound like that now (the speech pattern, not the slang so much). Or maybe women my age used to sound like that and then stopped as they got older. I can't tell.
No, it's spreading. You're right.
Another thing is that they've been lowering their voice.
Bothers some guys, but I personally enjoy it.

I've been here for 3 years, but I doubted I picked up THAT much of the accent. I think they based it off the city being New York (It really means manhattan to me, not the whole 5 buroughs), and I now call the subway the subway (although metro slips in from time to time).
I got the Bowie one too.
I avoided the Boston area bait questions (Nobody says tonic anymore) and ended up getting St. Louis, MO or some shit.
I also got St. Louis, MO. Arlington, VA and Washington DC.
