I think 3 is the worst of the bunch, it wasn't finished and is kinda half assed. Never played ODST, but Reach got things back on track. Loved 4, it did a lot right. I'm excited to see more of 5, I think they are on the right path.
Brought over from the MCC thread, as I totally missed there was a separate Halo 5 thread
Played the Halo 5 beta tonight.
Here's a breakdown of what's on each button, from what I remember:
Left trigger: Aiming down sites
Left bumper: Grenade
Right trigger: Shoot
Right bumper: Melee
Left stick (push): Sprint
Right stick (push): Crouch
Y: Switch weapons
X: Reload
B: Dodge / dash
A: Jump
New elements to the game:
* While dashing, shields won't reload. After a moment, a different reticle comes up. Hitting melee with do a shoulder rush, hitting (crouch of B, can't remember which) does a ground slide
* If you jump from a height higher than a normal jump - as in, off a ledge - you can do a ground pound (think it was by hitting melee). A target comes up, which you can re-position with the right analog, and when you hit the button again, you zoom down and do the pound.
* Using sights when you're in the air slows your descent to get better aim.
* Hitting A again after you've jumped at a ledge will grab it and pull you up
It's Halo, but with some changes. I can't sit here and tell you every little difference, because I was always a casual Halo player, and I barely touched Halo 4. The visuals are not at all impressive at this point, but the framerate definitely feels better than I ever remember it being before. I really didn't expect to be too excited about playing Halo multiplayer again, but I don't know, the little tweaks and additions they've made freshen it up just enough that I'm actually interested now. I kind of like the idea of going back to everybody having the same basic abilities, versus the more "specialty" ideas from Halo 4, if that is indeed the direction they're going.
We played two different modes. My coworker played one where the first team to win five rounds won the game. Then, I played a standard Team Deathmatch to 50 points.
I don't get the whole Halo 4 not having a level playing field thing, all because of the loadouts/customizations. It literally took playing the game for 2 - 3 hours to get all the abilities and weapons unlocked, and from then on no one really had an unfair advantage. What I didn't like is that the loadouts got rid of the beginning of the match strategy + battling/rushing for weapons around the map. Loadouts if anything took away from play strategy on maps and understanding timing of weapon respawns, placement, and team coordination around the map.
The video doc they released looks solid, plenty solid enough that I'm very excited to get my hands on the beta. Looks like I'm taking advantage of that Best Buy trade in a 360 deal for $150 deal this week!
No, what I mean is, I kind of like the idea of going back to gameplay where every player has the exact same abilities, and it's more about how good you are at using them and less the loadout. Not that I'd want that in every game—there are plenty where I like that level of customization—but I think, for Halo, I like it better being a simpler, more "arcade-y" type of first-person shooter.
Oh, I totally agree! That wasn't so much directed at you as it was a more blanket statement of what people complained about in Halo 4. I personally enjoyed Halo 4's multiplayer, way more so than Halo Reach. It just didn't have nearly as large of a community as needed to make the game fun to play for the long haul. Halo definitely is not a game to me that needs unlocks for abilities, guns, etc, I agree with you on the simpler is better. Static weapon spawns without customizable loadouts please!
Dashboard preview subscribers get early access to the Halo 5 beta starting tomorrow! Only lasts through the weekend, so check it out.
Shit, tomorrow, nice.
Nice way to distract us from how shitty MCC is.
Who's gonna play this tonight?
