Alien: Isolation

The Alien is scary as shit when it's finally looking for you.

Several hours in, this is my GOTY so far. Absolutely great! The only thing it's missing is 70s porn pinups on the walls, and I'm sure somebody will do a PC texture pack for that. :lol:

Speaking as a fan of the franchise (particularly the first three movies), they couldn't have made a better Alien game. It is exactly right.


The music cues are a mix of Alien/Aliens/Alien 3, and it's rad.

This game is easily the most frightening thing I have ever played.

"Oh cool, you thought you were safe in that vent? Lemme just yank you out of there backwards by your leg and murder you while you're squirming on the floor."

Fucking game is bleak. So Good.

The worker beds at the very beginning of the game had pin-up posters on them. There was also a porno mag sitting on one of the beds.

Nooooot really though. Everythings all 50s-style Ikea Art Deco looking. Maybe a console difference?

I think this is where the Rift will help me. I'm scared of losing unsaved progress when the alien is chasing me around, which I don't think is the kind of fear they were going for. I suspect a little more immersion would fix that. To be fair, I also have been playing during the day without headphones and with random animal and first grader noises coming from adjoining rooms.

However, the experience is compromised by low frame-rates and a rough, sub-720p presentation that makes it much harder to remain immersed. Xbox 360 gets the nod here, although some detail is lost to black crush in darker areas.

In the final analysis, the PC game is the definitive version of Alien: Isolation. While the level of graphical quality is only marginally improved over PS4 and Xbox One, the game is easy to run across a wide range of configurations, so 1080p at 60fps is achievable on older GPUs without having to dramatically lower graphical presets, while the low system requirements of the game easily open up running at 1440p at high frame-rates. A key advantage of PC gaming is the ability to scale the experience to your specific hardware, and the headroom available in Alien: Isolation opens up a vast range of options. Oculus Rift, anyone?

Incidentally, the PS3 version is completely playable and looks fantastic. So it's another case of 'nicer trash blowing around' in the more high-dollar versions.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, but doubling the resolution and frame rate is hardly just prettier trash.

I'll have the PC version eventually, but this is perfectly fine. The only noticeable framerate hit is in the cut scenes, and it sounds like you're having the exact same issue.

I'm liking the game but I am finding myself agreeing with the reviews saying it is too long. It's a marathon of "go do this" "oh wait to do that you have to do this" "oh I forgot in order to do that you have to do this" and so on. That shit is getting really old.

Also the INCREDIBLY long stretch of avoid all the killer robots midgame is fucking horrible, that shit could have been cut heavily. Fortunately after you get through that it picks up with more fun again.

EMP mines are your friends for that part.

I like killing the robots! Finally something to use those items on.

Have you murdered looters with the Alien yet?

I read complaints about the 'flashback' sequence, but I liked it alright. I was kinda bummed when it cut to CG.

Absolutely. I'm doing an official no human kill run, but using my xenomorphic buddy to do my dirty work doesn't count!

Frankly, on Hard it would be nearly impossible if you couldn't get enemies of enemies to be friends, and that's what I'm playing to everyone's surprise I am sure.

I clubbed one dude to death, and felt bad about it. I don't really have any problem with tossing a noisemaker into a crowd and watching the Alien do a murder-breakdance routine, though!

ProTip: Beating an android to death with the wrench alone takes forever and some very creative movements on Hard.

I got this working with DK1. Pretty cool except you can't read any text and after about a half hour I had to quit and had bad motion sickness for the next two hours. Consumer Rift... solve my problems!

I tried this, got caught, and the alien tackled me the second I broke free from the android. I guess it was hangin' around. :lol:

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing it when it's around.

Try just smacking a wall with the hammer for no good reason, or maybe check out the cool dent it makes in a monitor? You get company real fast, oof!

I just finished that part. You blew it. If you use the terminal and a button on one side and the terminal on the other, you can wipe out all of them on each side at once.

Got this on the Steam sale.

With the Rift on this is the scariest game I've ever played. I really don't know if I can handle this all the way through.

This game goes on forever and then the ending is stupid.

Overall, it was pretty good.
