Look at the difference between Mighty No. 9 and Mega Man 9 and 10. Capcom absolutely took the lazy path, and that created and/or didn't address an apparently very large market to do it right.
Mega Man 9 is great and arguably on par or better than 2/3. Mega Man Unlimited is also pretty fantastic. I don't see either of those as being lazy.
Ultimately I liked the look of Mega Man 9 and 10. There's a big chance Mighty No. 9 will look better, due to good artists aiming for a more ambitious look, but they picked smart limitations with 9 and 10 and did great work within them. I'd much rather look at a great-looking and detailed NES game than an ugly and sparse higher-resolution 2D game (like Super Meat Boy lol), even if I consider something like Uprising to look the best.
I also don't think that Super Meat Boy's problems are limited to its look, not by a long shot, but I don't know if we're just talking visuals or what.
No, it definitely goes beyond visuals. They're just the most obvious. A retro game could match or even beat a vintage game much more easily if it were just about graphics.
And that we have nothing from Mighty No. 9 besides a graphical mock up.
I imagine MM9 sold more than the 50k MN9 backers, so I'm not sure what your point is.
