ROBIN HOOD AND HIS MERRY MEN ARE UP TO IT AGAIN
This is what I could come up with in about 30 minutes of thinking. But it's not just because I think they're all excellent, it's also because it was a game that either changed how I played games entirely or changed my perception of them. And fuck you, you're getting a brief explanation of each one.
1. Sonic and Knuckles Lock On - When played as a complete game from start to finish, this game made me feel the proudest to be a "Sega Kid." It's my favorite Sonic experience.
2. Chrono Trigger - This game got me into RPG's entirely. I've played hundreds since. So yeah, it counts for a lot.
3. Mario 64 - This was the first fully 3D game I ever played. And a good choice of one!
4. Viewtiful Joe - This was the first time I cared so much about mastering an action game that I played it way more than could be described as healthy. As a game developer, I think Kamiya might be my favorite. I've played every one of his games since.
5. Geometry Wars/GW2 - This was the XBOX 360's killer app for me at launch. I played the sequel for dozens upon dozens of hours in order to get the highest score on my friends leaderboard (a brilliant, brilliant way to integrate menus AND leaderboards all in one.) If there was one game at an arcade I'd want my name to be at the top of their High Score list, this is the one. Ever moreso than ESP Ra.De
6. Metal Gear Solid - I had never played a stealth action game before this, and this is the great grandaddy. IMO, exemplified the coming age of lots of spoken dialogue and "cinematic gaming" that the PS1's competitors were simply not capable of at the time.
7. Resident Evil 4 - The perfect marriage of suspense AND action, just like it was a good mix of the old control scheme/gameplay and the new. This was the breath of fresh air that Resident Evil AND Capcom needed.
8. Dance Dance Revolution: I lost 80+ pounds playing this game. I've played it for more than 10 years and I still play it these days multiple days a week at my local Dave and Buster's, and is probably my main form of cardio.
9. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - It's a visual novel logic puzzle adventure game with sweet chiptunes music and wacky animations. It's fun telling yourself the story and then being satisfied that what you thought had happened is proven to be what happened.
10. World of Warcraft - I have played this game for close to 8 years. It keeps changing and it keeps getting better. I think raiding and raid bosses/encounters might be my favorite element in all of multiplayer gaming.
Honorable Mention goes to Guilty Gear X. It's the only fighting game I ever bothered to really care about and practice. Props to Gitaroo Man also, but if I had to choose between music games DDR trumps it in just sheer variety.
BONUS CONTENT: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was a Christmas present when I was 13. I was bedridden at the hospital for an exploded appendix. I spent the 3 days leading up to Christmas day in agonizing, poisoned pain, but on that day I got to play it on the hospital's video game console on wheels that they bring from room to room. Maybe it was the horrible circumstance, and maybe it's because I really did love it so much, but that's probably the game I'll remember forever, if none other. So eat it Tyler, playing Castlevania: SOTN feels like Christmas!
Beatmania IIDX. Nethack. Final Fantasy Tactics. Robotron 2084. Ms Pac Man /w speed hack. Espgaluda 2. Mars Matrix. Wipeout HD & Fury. Xi Jumbo. Bionic Commando.
Ok, ok. Do this for real.
No order.
1.DDR
2. Method Prime.
3. Tysons Punchout
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Skyrim
6. Beatmania iidx
7. Rockband
8. Street Fighter 2 Turbo
9. Castlevania SOTN
10. Doom
How would you even approach this? Take every genre you love and pick out the game that is the best example of that genre? I could never narrow it down to 10.
Ok something is really bothering me. WHAT TEN GAMES??
I like Mega Ten games
Here's my real list in no real order. They're mostly Nintendo games and i'm combining some, i don't even care
1) Super Mario 2 USA + SMB 1
2) A bunch of different Dragon Quest games, like anything after 4
3) Wind Waker + Majora's Mask
4) Ace Attorney series (5 might even be my favorite so far)
5) Megaman Legends 1
6) Final Fantasy XII + FFIX + FFIV
7) Maybe Pikmin 3, it has the perfect balance of chill and oh shit
8) Rhythm Heaven Series
9) Wonder Boy in Monster World + Dragon's Trap + MWIV
10) Balloon Fight
just kidding i combined a lot of them
11) Revenge of the Gator
Hyperdimension Neptunia is the only correct answer.
that's #12
13) Maken X
Super Monkey Ball -- Single player is awesome puzzle platforming. Multiplayer is fun party games.
Unreal Tournament -- Best multiplayer shooter ever. Sniper arena CTF for life.
Robotron 2084 -- The original dual joystick shooter is still the best.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory -- Interesting class-based gadgets and fun objective-based gameplay.
Doom -- Fast. Gory. Metal.
Contra III: The Alien Wars -- The most epic Contra game. Would rank higher if the overhead levels didn't suck.
ESPN NFL 2K5 -- FOOTBALL! FOOTBALL! FOOTBALL!
Streets of Rage 2 -- Punk ass street thugs getting power bombed to weird techno.
NHL Hitz 20-03 -- I just checked a dude through the glass.
Spelunky -- No two adventures are ever the same.
I know. but i'm playing Revenge of the Gator right now and it's so perfect
okay i just played both and while Kirby has more boards, Revenge of the Gator has better boards and the Japanese name translates to "Crocodile Parade of 66 Animals Pinball". I don't know how that doesn't make it one of the best games. of all time.
my old list from '04:
Pretty solid list for my tastes then. Now, a game of all time list would be more difficult. Especially if I didn't take the "series" shortcut. It was fun looking at the picks from others from 10 years ago too. I need to come back to this.Quote:
1) Unreal Tournament series
2) Yoshi Island
3) Tetris Attack
4) Castlevania-Symphony of the Night
5) Battlefield 1942 (series)
6) Mike Tyson's Punchout
7) Capcom Vs SNK 2
8) Soul Caliber
9) Super Metroid
10) Castlevania 4
Truth. This is probably the game I have played the most of all despite being way more of a single player gamer.Quote:

GTA v is better than 3. I think. I really haven't played 3 in a long time.
Both of the current gen GTA games are way better than the PS2 ones. If you don't believe me go back and play them.
Dudes, list however many games you want if 10 is insufficient. In retrospect I shouldn't have limited the number to 10. Lotta games out there...list 300 if you want.
NARC (PS2)
Dragon Drive D-Mastershot Treasure's magna opus, what you never played it?
That flash game on the website for Arcade Fire's second album - Infinite replayability; just like the chorus of "Ocean of Noise"
Moonlight Syndrome - Suda51's greatest work, and therefore since he is the Voltaire of our time, the greatest game ever.
Senet - The Killer App in Ancient Egypt.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Clearly the best game in the series by a huuuuuge margin, don't even bother with others.
