The game has me hooked, I can say that much. In the level with all of the cages to climb on, when you go into the tower and you have to do that all platforming level with the old school music. There is all sorts of platforms spinning and rotating. Man that was hard, but even though I was alone in my room, a fist was raised in success and a cry of triumph was bellowed after finally beating it. Excuse me now while I go play it again...
Oh my good lord. I thought some of the challenge levels were palm sweat inducing evil (particularly the Bay 7th shine one), but the one located in Delphino City that can only be reached with Yoshi is just hellish. The worst part is how boring it is to reach if you fail.
Got the game yesterday, am loving it. It's nice to have a 3d platformer without the tired "snow, water, fire, forest, desert, ect." theme levels. I'm so tired of these people that try to rationalize never buying/selling their N64 because Square went to Sony by going around spouting off about how Nintendo stopped making great games after SNES. If anything Nintendo's weakest platform for first party games was SNES, considering stuff like Stunt Race FX. N64 didn't have any first party clinkers approaching that level of suckitude. And if you're going to call games like Mario 64 and Zelda OOT "average" you must be smoking some powerful shit, I'd like to know what games are good if those games are only average
Similar to how it was in Yoshi's Island...or Mario 64...or every mario game ever made. Sunshine looks like a Mario game. Mario games have plain, watercolored textures. Thats why I say to whoever complains about the textures; have you played a Mario game before?Quote:

I remember someone complaining to me about all of the "jaggies" and aliasing issues in the distance. When I explained to him that that was intentional to look like "heat wave" distortion, he would'nt hear any of it.
As for the textrues being blotchy by intent- that makes enough sense. In fact, I feel much better about it now :)

I think Mario would be a better choice than Zelda.

The cutscenes are very puzzling to me. The graphics don't look much more complex than the in game engine. In fact, most of the time it looks exactly the same as the in game engine. To fit it all on there it had to be compressed to hell and it just looks awful. So, why not just render it in real time with the game engine and loose the compression artifacts?Quote:

I must say, I hate having story-elements(cut-scenes)in a Mario game. They should have learned by looking at Sonic Adventure games that it doesn't fit in the mascot-platform genre. Or maybe it's just me.

Assuming the same feel carries throughout the game, I think SMS may end up being the oddest game Miyamoto has ever done. Some things are just plain bizarre. Which I haven't decided if it's good or bad yet.
I love it love it love it love it!!!!! Pure feakin magic. I can't believe how good it is. After hearing some negatives from people on this board who claim to have beat it already and said it wasn't that good, I was a little worried(silly me). I had so much fun last night playing it that I actually got a natural high. Thats exactly what the other Marios did to me and its also why I love them so much. There are a few things I want to talk about. First off, the camera. I have an opinion about people who don't like it. I believe people play 3d games two different ways; either manipulating the camera heavily or not even touching it. I manipulate the hell out of it, so for me, it's without a doubt the closest to perfection that you can get in a 3d platformer with such open-ended gameplay. Up until now Mario64 had my favorite camera but you could only move it in segments. The camera in SMS is exactly what I've always wanted since Mario64. If you don't play with it a lot and constantly put it where you need it, your gonna have a hard time. I absolutly love it. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I was just hanging out last night on top of a roof watching birds fly by, slowly tracking them perfectly with the camera, it was a very enjoyable moment. Someone also said earlier in this thread that the game has fewer moves than 64 because two were left out. Thats just not true. I've found many new moves, with and without the use of FLUDD. Has anyone discovered what you can do on the lilly pads with FLUDD? This is a perfect example of how useful the camera is and this wouldn't be possible without such camera control. Stand in the middle of a lilly pad, rotate the camera to where Mario is facing directly at you, then click the right shoulder button all the way in and your using the lilly pad as a FLUDD powered boat. You steer it with the left stick and keep your camera in place with the right stick. There's lots of other stuff I'd like to point out but I gotta go. Anyhow, this game is the stuff, it's amazing in so many ways, it's probably the best game I've ever played...no, actually, it's definitly the best game I've ever played and I'm only about 4-5 hours into it. I just hope it's not another six years before we get another one. I'm just now realizing how uneventful gaming has been since Mario64(with a few exceptions).

SMS is going back to Soft Etc this weekend for $30 store credit. It doesn't meet my expectations of a good platformer, in part spoiled by the likes Rayman 2, Napple Tale, and even Klonoa 2.
Here are my opinions (my prerogative, too):
1- The camera is terrible and stubborn like a mule when you try to move it where you want. There's no designated "Mario cam" as in Mario 64, either. Getting it stuck behind a wall is a common occurance.
2- No lock-on mechanism. What good is strafing if you cannot move either forward/backward or in an arc around your target?
3- Bland textures. Did the game designers intend for the game to be cell-shaded, or does it just look like it?
4- Overly bright colors. Usually having bright colors is a good quality, but when combined with a bad camera system, it just contributes to my nausea.
5- Lack of character. Mario has become the Mickey Mouse of videogames. He has no personality in contrast to Rayman, Alicia(sp?), Klonoa, or others. Even Luigi's Mansion did a better job of portraying Luigi as a fearful hero than SMS did of anything for Mario. It's almost as if Mario is a generic representation for the gamer-CPU interface, which as I mentioned above is mediocre.
I still haven't learned my lesson: don't buy a game just for the hype; get it because you want it.
But you haven't made one comment about the gameplay. Everything else you mentioned is superficial save the camera.
I agree the camera isn't the best .I don't like how if it's far away it goes directly above you, and upclose it's down to the side, regardless. I wish I had control over that, sometimes you want close and above or far and to the side, or somewhere in between. But still, camera's in 3D games are pains we've dealt with since Mario64. If you're not used to their shortcomings by now, I don't know what to say. I think it's pretty clear no one has any really good ideas on how to make a good camera in an open ended 3D game.
Mario Sunshine provides exploring, unique play mechanics and platforming action in spades. All it ever promised, all it needs to deliver. The hype is not Nintendo's fault, they've been very honest about the game.
So yeah, if you don't like platformers, SMS was a bonehead purchase.
To me, the gameplay is unremarkable. The squirtgun/jet on his back would have been more fun if you could hover until the water's gone, target easier (an aspect which falls victim to the camera). I had a terrible time getting that thing to aim where I wanted it to aim, especially during boss fights. Try to squirt the plant's mouth? Seems easy. But you can't strafe or target it. You're left with (1) trying to run around it, (2) facing it, (3) locking the camera, and (4) squirting it. But then all is lost because the camera didn't react as fast as I did, so I end up shooting 90 degrees to the side.
In Zelda:OoT, the above would have been lock & slash, slash, slash all you want. 1 step.
What else? I hate stalemates. If you run out of water, you shouldn't be forced to quit, no matter where you are-- even in the midst of a dried-arena boss battle. Why not allow the player to slurp some of the water off the ground to partially refill the tank? You should be able to punch the boss or enemies & make them spit up water so you can use it as a last resort. How about recycling the paint off the ground, separating it into brown sludge waste plus water you can use?
I'll give this game 1 or 2 more days, but I have a hunch that I'll only be gathering more complaints--not coins. (Oh yeah, coin collecting? It's a 16-year-old concept. Time for something new, or at least don't make it the focus of the game.)

Maybe you should learn how to play THIS game instead of trying to play it like other games you already know how to play.
That would totaly defeat the purpose & take away all challenge from the game. Honestly, you just can't seem to come to grips with the game itself. You are spending all your time comparing it to other (Inferrior - Rayman2 or Totally different - Klonoa is 2D) games instead of learning how to play this one.Quote:

Have you ever played a mario game before? No really, have you? Tell me which one doesn't have coins in it, I'd really like to know. It isn't a tired concept, it is an integral part of the atmosphere & heritage of the series. It is one of the things that makes it a mario game.Quote:

Hovering until the water runs out most likely would have a negative effect in a lot of areas in the game. This is a platformer, precisely aimed and timed jumps is an important part of the game. A jet pack that you can use as a fallback would ruin a lot of that.
Also notice you can only use the jet pack once per jump, again a conscious decision to deny you a safety net for the jumps.
The jet pack really just needs to add a little flavor and spin to the platforming aspect, which it does. It needs to not be a crutch, which it isn't.
One of the few times I disagree with Thugg, actually. Im quite please witht his lil game here.

Using the jet pack through the entire resevoir would destroy the game play. And I really don't find it hard to "manage my resources". The amount of water the tank holds is more than generous.
I don't know about you, but I remember a lot of times in past mario games where if you fucked up a jump, there was no safety net. If you landed on another platform that saved you from death, you were lucky and given a second chance to get it (especially in the later levels).Quote:

I got this game from Nintendo today and thus far I can say it rawks...
Ive only played it about 2-3 hours so far..
And the water pack is a nice change imo....

I think I just noticed something. Remember when Miyamoto said he wanted to mature Mario? He never spoke of any major changes to appearance, but said he wanted Mario more 'mature?' Ever think the fact that even full-grown adults are having a hard time getting through Sunshine is an indicator of 'mature?' The bosses are insane. The *early on spoilers* Giant Caterpillar boss on the beach had me nervous, I'm playing Sunshine on a large tv with meaty speakers and the speed of that thing had my heart pounding. Also, the pink ghosts in the hotel remind me of Kirby.
Hmm, apparantly the game might be too hard for a lot of people. All the Mario games require a lot of skill, but this game is even harder than the others. It seems that a lot of people don't have the capacity to control such a useful "free" camera. I love the difficulty but maybe N made it too hard for most people.
Trouble with the pirana plant, can't spray in his mouth....oh jeez. You seriously need to take this game back, you are so in over your head.

Mario Sunshine is just the illest 3D platforming game ever concieved. It also is the reason I bought a gamecube the other day.

Miyamoto kicks ass for pumping the difficulty up. Im really surprised at how challenging the game is. A friend of mine, who I would consider pretty decent at games, could not beat the 2 levels he played after multiple tries. (the 2nd pirana boss and the sand bird 6 coin level). Maybe the game IS too hard for average gamers. I like it that way :)
After seeing how well Sunshine turned out, I cant wait to see what Nintendo has in store for Metroid and especially Zelda.

As for the coin collecting what would you rather have? Fruits, bananas, gems, almost every platformer I have played includes this theme, it's a way of making the players explore the area fully. It's not obligated so if you don't like it skip it and just do the mission based parts of the game like the boss fights and what not, that way you enjoy it more. We already know you don't need all the shines to finish the game.
As long as Random battles stay in RPGs I don't see coin collecting leaving.

Well, heres the part I figured out from the start (Rhyme!), the last coin is on top of that tower. Now, go ahead and get the random swearing and throwing of various objects while screaming "Well, how the FUCK do I get up there! He turns! A lot!" out of your system.
Done? Good show. Anywho, after nabbing all of the coins from the bird itself, stand directly in the middle, right where the tail joins the main part of the bird. This way, no matter which way he turns, youre close to an edge. Now, when he turns... Simple walk onto the side that will be face up, when the angle is just right for you to stand on it. He turns slowly, so this is a piece of cake. When he flatten out, walk back.
That is all.

The Clean teeth part is one of the coolest things I've seen in sunshine yet! I won't say anymore than that so I don't spoil anything, but wait until you see it!

What no one has mentioned yet- there are occasionally enemies that you can stomp to provide you with extra water...even during boss battles. I've honestly had no difficulties with the difficulty. I've been going back and completing all the "no water pack" stages twice as well, I love those bits. The camera had it's bad moments, but most of the time it's incredibly easy to adjust on the fly with the c-stick.

Giant mecha-bowser fought from the rollercoaster I was blown away. That part was just perfect.
25 shines (not counting 50+ Blue coins that I haven't cashed in yet) and the difficulty starts to ramp up pretty high... And I love it!
Now, if only I can shake off that damn song ("Clean is better than dirty...") from my head everytime Mario's cleaning up that sludge... :D
Camera control can be frustrating, but nothing that the veterans of Mario 64 can't handle.

What's all this 'difficulty' talk? I admit, I only played an hour tops, but I didn't have any problems accomplishing anything. My beef is with the SHITTY controls, and the barely better tham SM64 graphics (graphics matter, esp. when it's the follow-up to SM64). I never had camera problems in 64, and didn't in SMS, but why the fuck didn't they use the right analog for aiming the hose? Ala Luigi, Morrowind, etc? The controls as is are shit, and suck all the enjoyment out of the game.
Yes, I tried that! What good is it to walk left or right when your enemy turns to face another direction? What's required in this situation is that you can strafe in an arc around your enemy, i.e. lock-on like Zelda:OoT. The first person perspective won't work there, either.Quote:

Okay, I've said enough... some of my impromptu comments from yesterday aren't worth your time. You guys enjoy your game. I'm selling mine. Hopefully Rayman 3 or Project BG&E will be more satifying, but I'm not going to hold my breath anymore.

Just reading some of the comments in here, wow. I'm not gonna get into this whole thing. I know my impressions will just get pushed aside, but here it goes anyway.
I could probably play Sunshine, and only Sunshine for the next four months and be perfectly happy as a gamer. I never played Mario 64, so that may have something to do with it, but whatever. What it is about this game that amkes it addicting, that makes it enjoyable, and that makes it such a pleasant experience, still manages to elude me. Still, I know I'm having a ton of fun with it and thats all I need to know.

The sand bird is a pain in the ass. He only turns once, so you don't have to worry about it after you get through it. Right before he turns, I jumped on the cloud that you pass right by. Then it rotates, and I just hop off the cloud onto his side. He rotates slowly back, so it's pretty easy to just walk as he rolls. Be sure to get the blue coins that go by on the clouds too!
Another amazing level.
Three hours of playing and watching and its a mixed bag for me...
Negatives:
- HORRIBLE camera. We were frustrated after fives minutes with the thing.
- Control is still wonky for me. Maybe I just need to give it more time, but some areas are just a pain to traverse.
- So far there really is no Nintendo/Mario charm in this game, outside of the cute Toads and the badass classic music when you go underground.
- The general music is terrible, to me at least. I hate the Carribean sound! I hope the music improves/changes style later on.
- The islanders have to be the worst character ever created. Their design is so uninspired.
- I cannot see myself playing this game for more time than it takes to beat it. 120 Shines my ass - the tedium of collecting the blue coins and Shines would kill me.
Positives:
+ The game can be really fun, and I can see the platforming elements making this one hell of a great jump-fest.
+ The whole water cannon thing should make for great antics.
+ Solid boss battles.
I am going to put a lot more time into this game before passing any sort of judgement on it. As of right now though, I can see why EThugg and Rose dislike the game so much.

I honestly do not see what is wrong with the controlls. This is coming from a guy who hates Mario 64 and all of its "I bet you can't even make Mario walk in a straight line" controller flinging awfulness. Unlike that other 3D Mario game, this one controlls just fine. Mario was triangle jumping off of walls and hovering to pinpoint locations in no time.
Practice makes perfect. I can make jumps better and move the camera to a better spot much easier now. The boss battles are just awesome in this game.
I think it controls better than Super Mario 64 once you get used it due to the GC's superior analog stick. In Super Mario 64, I would accidentally fall off edges more than in Sunshine.

And as for sounding like such a pissant...I'm disappointed, because I coulda seen people dismissing and loathing this game from miles away, but was hoping it really wouldn't be the truth. Hero, you are right about Sunshine not being Super Mario 64. It feels a lot different. Sunshine didn't grip me right away like the other Mario games did, but now that I'm into it, it's addicting.

How can you people have problems with the control?! Has any 3D platformer done it better? No. You see you have to tilt the stick where you want him to go. Same with the camera, just move the stick! I have gotten it hung up maybe twice, plus no 3D platformer has ever had a perfect camera, I don't see it possiable. Also I don't see why you people think its super hard, I have had it since tuesday and have 80 shines, the bosses are a little to easy if you ask me. Um what else, oh and how can anyone say this is not like Mario 64? It plays just like it, only with a water pack. As for shooting things, hey why not point your self at the enemy and press R, or just click it in and aim. Also WATER IS EVERY WHERE! IF YOU CAN'T FIND ANY YOU ARE A FUCKING MORON!
Oh and one more thing, this is the greatest game of all time.

By no means. Love the game if you want. I hated it. But so what? I finally tried ED (for those who don't know) and turns out I did hate it as much as I thought I would. And I hate the GC controller period. I'd be stupid to say those things to you when I love the XB controller and like a game like Bruce Lee (both of which are pretty unpopular on this board).Quote:

Just got the game today. It feels like Mario 64 (which isn't necessarily bad). Some problems with clipping and hit detection (one example when the water wheel thingie spins and the teeth goes right through Mario if he's standing in front of it). Cleaning up all that goop can get tedious but I'll keep coming back for more shines. I'm not reading the other posts so far for fear of spoilers. Off I go back to Mario Sunshine! BTW, Liquid Mario is such a cool villain. :evil:

Well, I've had it since Wednesday and have 67 shines so far. I love it myself, but it is quite harder than Mario 64 was. Which is good and bad. I like a challenge, but sometimes I get a bit impatient with waiting and screw up and down I go into the abyss...*shrugs*
I like it myself. I haven't done an all day game fest like I did yesterday with Mario...

Im about 4-5 hours in and have 18 shines so far...
And to say you like or dislike this game based on an hour of play is silly, it gets much better the more you play...

2 of my friends, who basically arent heavy into gaming at all, picked up the game and within 5 minutes were pulling off wall jumps and hover jumps perfectly. The controls are fine.
Not a biggie, but did anyone look up in the sky of the city hub level and see the commercial airliner high up in the sky with the jet stream trail? Its little details like this that makes Nintendo, Nintendo. This game fucking rules. Believe it.

All the moves are done the same, he runs the same, turns the same, its exactly the same. I don't see how anyone can say they control different, because they don't. This is not based on opinion, its fact. Me and several of my friends ran this same test and came up with the same conclusion.
That's if you're not taking into account the totally new FLUDD controls, which sorta make up a huge part of the gameplay...

Well I was refering to running, jumping, turning, wall jumps and such. The basic stuff. Hovering and Turbo Prop are different, but they control perfectly fine. But they were not in M64, just like how the hats are not in Super Mario Sunshine.

The controls are exactly the same except wall jumps are now much easier to do. They were a royal pain in the ass in SM64, they're not bad in SMS.
I just cant get how people bitch about the controls sucking and think that Mario64 had better controls...
The GC controller is so much better its not even funny, that in itself is all the difference...
The GC Analog stick is the smoothest of all the official Console pads. Its like silk.
The analog stick makes aiming FLUDD painless, and controlling Mario couldn't be any easier.
I like the 64 pad fine, and hate the GC pad. The GC pad is fucking tiny, and sucks. The water shit is what controls bad, so anyone saying it controls the same fucking ignored what I said, but still responded. I said the right analog should have aimed, then it would've been fine. Well, as fine as it can be with the shitty pad.

Maybe I missed some posts, but it seems like 50 people here are freaking out because EThugg, Rose, and myself stated that we didn't like the way the game controlled. I've realized that the game controls just fine, its just the camera that blows, so that drops the list down to about 50 people that love the game and the controls, 2 people that hate the game and its controls, and one person who is undecided on it (myself).
Stop freakin' out people and go back to plaing the game. If EThugg hates the way it controls, let him go play his Shaq-Fu or Bruce Lee or whatever, and you can enjoy the Sunshine :)

Just beat it tonight, and I have 80 Shines. Some thoughts:
The controls are damn near perfect. The Fludd couldn't control any better. My only qualm is with the jumps, as Yoshi noted a long while ago. Spin jumps and somersaults are inconsistent (or maybe just not forgiving enough). And the gate-flipping mechanics are confusing.
The camera isn't perfect, but it's really good. The C-Stick is a really intuitive way of controlling the camera, and it rarely gets stuck. Even when it does, you can still press L to recenter it or take a look in first-person.
The challenge is high and sometimes frustrating, but it always makes you want to come back for more. Even during tough boss battles, though, I was still having a blast. I don't think I've ever experienced anything like the Manta Storm in a game before. Except maybe in Mars Matrix. I think people are too used to having things handed to them in 3D platformers, and this game doesn't give you many freebies. I'd say the difficulty is comparable to Banjo-Tooie, but that's not considering the hidden Shines.
40 shines and counting, still having a great time :). Love my Wavebird too.
I am confused by what you mean by Gate Flipping mechanics Burgundy? Do you mean the Cage Doors? Or do you mean on the Pianna Park (amusment park) the Cage doors that open when you spray water at them?
EThugg, the Gamecube controller has a Left Trigger. Do you mean Z button? And EThugg like you should be one to talk when people tell you your wrong about something. Considering thats all you have ever done on these boards is yelled at people about the errors of their judgment in your eyes.
Those cage doors are irritating(I assume that's what burgundy's talking about). Having to use two different buttons feels unnatural. Not that it's a big deal.
