The cages bothered me...once. The fludd controls bothered me for...a minute.
Has anyone used the move where you hang by a line and use fludd to swing you around and then you let go? Thats the only move I have trouble with.
Clash - The cage at Pinna Park was meant to be obnoxious, so I accept it. I was referring to the button differences in the gate flipping. Not a large problem, but a bit annoying.
Green - I completely forgot about the line spin! I don't think it's really used for anything important, though.
The line spin comes in handy on a few parts. If you time it right and get spinning as fast as possible you can go really far (esp. if you hover too). But it's hard to use. It seems more like luck to land/grab where you want. I used on the first level to get the red coins along those lines (that are like 100ft in the air). I went from a lower line to a higher line that otherwise would have been very hard to jump to, and a total pain in the ass to walk around to.
Fun move, but hard to use effectivly.
I always confuse myself when trying to go through the gates. It sucks when you hit the wrong button and instead of flipping the cage door, you fall off.
And EThugg is just being EThugg. I'm surprised it took everyone so long to put the Thugg Blinders (tm) on. When he gets like that there is no point in going on about it.
I gave it a fair break. It is shit. :oQuote:

Hmmmm, I hope "red coins of the pirate ships" is not a good example of how this game becomes difficult. That's about as unfun as it gets right there. If this is representative of what's to come, then my opinion's going to make a slight u-turn.
no, the pirate ship is not the idea of how difficult things get. That's just annoying.
A better idea of difficult...there's a hotel and one of the Shine objectives include finding a pineapple to feed a Yoshi egg. There's nary a pineapple to be found in lobby fruitshop, so it takes semi-detective work and a creative way of thinking to find it. And that's not how all of the later levels reflect difficulty, but just one shade of it.
Sorry, just frustrated at that level right now. The combination of lots of things obscuring the camera, the rotating, and Mario's tendency to "jack hammer" (an annoying lil bug that returns, hoped they'd fix that) there alot is really pissing me off :)
Wait till you get to the part in the amusement park where you have to climb cages in the back. That was the worst part of the game for me.
I still wonder about the one Hero mentioned. I could not figure it at all until I looked at a FAQ. Was there any sane way of getting it besides going around butt stomping everywhere? Seems more like one of those WTF things to me. Ah well.
The Red Coins on the Pirate ship is easy, just go to the top and drop/hover to the ones in the air. All the others are just doing some simple hand over hand work on the fences.
You want hard? Try the Pipe out on the Island with the strandad guy in Delfino Plaza. That sucks, not only does it take a while to get Yoshi out there via boats, but the level it self is a bitch!
And the cages on the back of the amusement park is easy as well, just bring the camera all the way back and you are fine.
Oh, and 109 Shines and counting.
You don\'t need to butt stomp, if you aim at the floor the water will spin the floor panels as well.Quote:

Well, I'm back. For those that were wondering, the past week was spent (since I got the game Tues. afternoon) playing Sunshine in my very sparse spare time. I'd get home from EB at 11:00 pm or so, and start playing until 3:00 am or so, then get up at 8:00 am to go to my first job and do it all over again. Point is, I finally got down to playing it hardcore Friday and Saturday, and it is so damn good! The cinema scenes freaked me out, but I quickly recovered and began to slide Mario through the muck in the airstrip, leaving behind trails and getting it all over his clothes... now THAT is fun as hell.
The controls are different from Mario 64... they took out a hell of a lot of moves, which threw me for a loop (until I started using the FLUDD, which more than makes up for any omissions... I still miss my long jump, tho'). Mario also holds his "screeching turns" longer (make him run in a direction, then point the stick in the opposite direction), making it easier to do a somersault. Wall jumps are a hell of a lot easier, since he grabs onto the walls Mega Man X style. It's so cool to see him sliding down cliff walls in Noki Bay. Oh, and has anyone tried the water somersault (click R and press A)? It sends out a big fan of water that cleans up messes real quick.
As far as difficulty goes, I guess it was hard since I saw a Game Over screen, which hasn't happened in a while with a Mario game. The hardest shine to get (hands down) is the lilypad level in the main hub. It takes SO DAMN LONG to get there, and then you die.
OK, point is, after some hardcore playing Saturday (and I mean waking up at eleven and playing until three in the morning, had no breakfast or lunch, didn't even leave my room, didn't even SHOWER for the love of Pete-type playing here) I have emerged victorious with 120 shines. It is indeed a bittersweet victory, though, since I thoroughly enjoyed my short few days with Mario, and was very sad that it was all over.
Now, if you'll excuse me again, I will delete my save file and start from scratch.
Damn, looks like the race to get the most shines in the least amount of time is over. ;)Quote:

I certainly wish I had that much time to play the game, but yeah I agree with mostly all your points. It's a great game and I don't think any platformer will touch it for a while.
OK, here's some helpful Sunshine tips from ol' Uncle Mzo:
- Press Z... when you roll the cursor over a location, it's information (# of shines, secret shines, high coin score, and number of blue coins found (very important)) will be displayed. Handy!
- Since Mario's control is camera dependent, it is sometimes easier to keep him moving in a forward line and using the C-stick to make him turn.
- Spray everything with water... it usually pays off.
- Try to eat everything with Yoshi. It's funny and will usually pay off.
-Don't even try to ration your water, there's plenty everywhere. If you run out, you're a tool.
OK, this is lame. I'm stopping. If anyone has any problems or questions regarding Sunshine, just post here and I'll pop in and answer them, or insult you. Or both.
I'm up to about 46 Shrines after purchasing the game yesterday, I was unable to shut it off last night, it kept calling me (ask Bahn) and I played until 10:30 this morning, slept for about five hours, woke back up and played some more. It's friggin' addictive as hell, I am this comic incarnate right now.
There are tons of niggling flaws and minor problems, but nothing's ticked me off yet (although a couple jumps have started to get to me). I have a feeling the Shine of jumping behind the Ferris Wheel is going to be the first to piss me off, it's annoying as hell.
I found the "behind the ferris wheel" to be pretty easy. Just spin the camera around when needed and keep going. Not hard.
Does that screen (when you hit z) show blue coins? I didn't see any indication for it...
If you drag the cursor over each locale in the first "Z screen," the number of blue coins collected for each is shown.
The only problem I had was with getting stuck(collision problems) on a part of a board and not being able to do anything and this was in my first stage! But so far it's a kickass game, really addicting fun.
I'm taking it slow a bit since my job hasn't let me get a day off entirely to play it all day but it's all good. By the way is it possible to get the green Yoshi?
Yoshi-dog's colors don't matter; they're dependent on the last fruit you ate. Whenever he "dies" or runs out of juice, he reverts to his green Yoshi-dog form.
Oh, and Mech, I found something that PISSED ME THE HELL OFF. In the Hub level, I did a spin jump with Yoshi up to a roof, only to fall through it and into the ground, to my doom. This has happened twice (once w/Yoshi-dog, one without, in two separate locations). This should NOT happen in a Nintendo game, I'm sorry (as bad as Peach's castle roof was in Mario 64).
And Rumpy! That was one of my tips, damnit! Read my posts! The # of blue coins will appear on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Can't miss it.
Here's another tip when you're looking for blue coins: be suspicious of everything that is blue. EVERYTHING!
PS - and if anyone wonders why I call Yoshi Yoshi-dog, read Eastman and Laird's first run of TMNT stories until you get to Splinter's origin. I don't know if the line where Shredder (then Oroko Saki) says Yoshi-dog (to, of course, Hamato Yoshi) is in the movie, but it always made me laugh.
Yeah I know it's only his fruit colors but I thought it would be cool and nice to play him as his good old green version. Ah well.
I've fallen through the pirate ships twice now. Seems SMS has a lil hit detection glitch in it.
...and the water pack is stupid.
I've fallen through things numerous times. My first attempt at the amusement park red coins I kept falling THROUGH the pirate ships. I managed to land on one once. Took 2 steps. Fell right through. I quit and came back the next day. Got the coins in a few minutes. Arr.Quote:

I've fallen through numerous solid objects on the challenge stages, too, and I can't think of a worse place for that to happen. Yet I didn't get all that angry. I'm not sure why. Waste 10 lives, finally two jumps away from that shine and I fall through a solid object...I should be smashing that Wavebird. But I just shrugged and finished the level on my next life. I don't get it. Any other game and I would've thrown the system in the trash. This game is too addicting.
The obstacles always have at least 2 extra lives in them, so you can retry them to infinity with out losing a life.
Also Yoshis color determins what type of block the fish will turn into in Ricco Harbor. I find it really funny that you spary Yoshi puke, he can just hurl on a whim, very strange.
Anyone else catch the Luigis Mansion joke?
Yeah I caught that Luigi's Mansion joke, heheh nice one.
Yeah, the Luigi's Mansion joke was funny. I love it when games make reference to other games. Especially when it's done Duke Nukem-style and refers to other companies' games.
Yeah, I saw that too.
I'd also like to add that swimming was done 10x better on Mario 64 than Sunshine... strange, considering how important water is in Sunshine.
And, since we've all made it as far as the first Pinna Island level...
*MAJOR STORY SPOILER COMING UP*
What the hell happened to the Koopa Kids?? Have they all been rolled into this one particular Koopa Kid? And why aren't Peach and Mario all like "Another one?? Where do they come from?"
How did Bowser Jr. get that "magic" brush, anyway? Did E. Gadd just "give" it to him, like he said? I'd say no. But what the hell does that have to do with the story? They never really go back to that. Weird.
I've gotten stuck on the mast of the pirate ships. Like mario will stand right next to it and get stuck, like his foot is caught or the mast is magnetic and he won't move.
I was refering to your tip, I was looking for a more detailed location because when I looked at the "z" screen I didn't notice a blue coin counter.Quote:
That was one of my tips, damnit! Read my posts! The # of blue coins will appear on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Can't miss it.
Hm, I haven't fallen through anything yet. Weird. 77 shines so far...
*laughs at Mzo's all too true story bit, all too true*
On the (damn I can never remember any of the names) the port level with all the ships and cranes, when you go up into the tower and do the platforming level sans FLUDD with all the rotating blocks, I must have fallen both through the blocks and jumped up through the blocks 20 times.
SMS has problems detecting angled surfaces properly. It's pretty bad for a flagship Nintendo game.
I found it really easy, too, but only because you can get up there without climbing the cages. If you go to where you would get on the roller coaster, you can hover over to the base of the walkway/cage where most of the red coins were in the collect the red coins stage. From the top of that walkway, you can hover to the top of the tower that the ferris wheel is connected to.Quote:

It's not hard to do it the regular way, either...
You do know that all you do is use the spray nozzle on the movable gates back there, right? You can be standing on top of the gates and shoot them from weird angles, and they'll still flip, as long as they get hit by water. They don't ask you to do any type of incredible jumps or anything...
Oh, and one more thing I didn't realize until later on in the game... it is a HELL of a lot easier to jump down to the mushrooms under Pianta Village from the left side of the bridge than from the green platform where the bridge starts. You can avoid that stupid trampoline mushroom entirely.
The problem with the back of hte ferris wheel isn't the jumps, it's the camera. At least it was for me.
Thanks for the tip about Pianta Village. I just stopped playing an hour ago or so after my 6 or 7th time dying in a row from the trampoline mushroom.
From the little I've played of this game (and it's very little indeed, haven't had much time to play cuz of work) it is great. I'm only 8 shines in so I know I can't pass much judgement, but the controls are excellent, tight and responsive. I was suprised to find that the game is a bit of a challenge, unlike SM64. The platforming parts, in the caves, had me a little frustrated, and I'm guessing it will only get harder, but a challenge is never a bad thing, so it's all good. Now on with my quest for 120 shines.
When I went back to the ferris wheel last night, I beat it easily. Turns out I was doing it wrong (I was leaping and hovering from cage wall to cage wall, I didn't realize you could spray the flipping walls and climb right over), once I figured that out it was a walk in the park.
Got up to like 77 Shines last night and reached what I'm guessing is the final area, but after trying it a few times I found I was too tired to attempt it properly. Time to show my hand...
I kinda figured that was the problem... I did the same thing the very first time I tried it.
Oh, and here's another tip, concerning the Mudboats. (There's one in the first Noki Bay stage and one in Corona Mountain).
Your spray works like a rudder in them... stand in the back, face the back of the boat and spray to move forward. If you want to turn right, you have to stand in the back, face right, and spray. That'll move the butt of the boat to the left, pointing the nose to the right. Get it? Don't try to move the boat while standing in the middle... stand at the front or at the rear. It's a little tricky the first time.
*looks at Wildcats new avatar*
Wait a minute...that's me!
I hate those boats! I hate them I hate them I hate them! Great idea, stupid physics! Why is that sometimes if I stand at the right side of the boat and shoot water off that side my boat will go right? How is it travelling in the same direction as its pushing force? Gah!
MAD SPOILER, YO.
Alright, just beat the game (and grabbed a few more Shines), and must say I hate that last battle (and no, it doesn't stand up to the coolness that is flinging Bowser around by his tail). All this talk about people falling through floors, and here I was gonna spout off about how I've encountered no such problems, then they decide to rear their ugly head during the final battle.
No less then three times did I smash the floor during that battle and immediately (before I even touched the controls again) shot right through the floor to my death. Greargh! As if Mario's reluctance to turn the hell around and wall-jumping off falling pieces of hot tub into the giant pit wasn't enough trouble for me...
END SPOILER.
For those of you going for all Shines, wait to get the 100 coin one for the plaza until after you beat the game. It's a million times easier, I did it the hard way. Damn birds...
That avatar was getting a little moldy anyway. This one goes well with the custom status ;).
I had the exact same wall-jumping and clipping problems (and that was also the only place I had any problems with clipping) with the final battle. It would've sucked even without those problems, though.
Well I am at 110 shines, all I have left are Blue coins. This should not be hard, just time consuming. Spray everything, if its blue its a blue coin is what I have gathered. Blue Butterfly, blue coin. Blue Bird, blue coin. Now the scavanger hunt begins!
Hey Mech, I just explained why the boats act funny... so stand either at the front or at the back and you should be fine. The boat turns in the direction you shoot water because the butt is being pushed away, the tip forward. Get it?
Maybe I do... I dunno... the point is, I don't like the controller, or the controls in SMS. Simple as that. I still love Mario himself, and Nintendo. It's just that after this and ED, 2 of maybe 8 games total I was looking foward to on GC, I'm pretty frustrated with GC. I'm sorry if I've come off as an ass (then again, if I didn't, would I have been the EThugg you all hate or love (mostly hate)?), I'm just really disappointed. The controls, the graphics, some lame level designs... have fun, enjoy the game, this new Mario just isn't for me...Quote:

What exactly is the problem with the controls for you EThugg? When you press foreward does mario go left? When you press A does he spin jump? Whats the problem with the controls? If by Controls you mean camera I guess that is understandable, kinda. I am just baffled by people saying the control is bad. I just imagine seeing it that way.
I love the controls. Sunshine makes me remember how much I dislike the N64 analog stick.
I've made it clear the FLUDD controls are crap IMO... lets move on, you guys just keep discussing the game. I've given as close to an apology as anyone has ever gotten from me, let's not worry about my issues with it further...
Mzo: I read that (though it was well after I was done with that contraption, even if I must go back for blue coins), but things like what I said still don't make sense. It's underlying screwy in some ares.
Ethugg: I want you to know that almost every time I see Water Mario, I think of you, thanks to that avatar you had for so long. Even if you've left Sunshine, it seems Sunshine has not left you (in my mind, anyway).
Thats kinda creepy MechDeus.
You think it's creepy? I have to deal with Water Mario liking the Bruce Lee XBox game, and he doesn't even talk!Quote:

Do you get anything (besides self satisfaction) for getting all 120 shines? Please don't say what it is.
I have no clue, but there better be something! But self satisfaction would be Ok I guess. But I would like something. I have avoided finding out what you get for 120 so I don't know.
Yeah, you get to see Yoshi!
Oh... wait...
Stupid thing about Mario 64 was that there was a very complicated set of jumps you could do to get to the roof top, except yoshi would do nothing. And why would anyone need all those lives when they just got all 120 Stars?! Better be something better then that.
You've talked to the guy who gives out shades and got the extra thing from him?
ah yup, there it goes..just got a couple shines in Noki Bay and now I'm starting to really get into this game. I knew if I perservered it'd happen, this is Mario after all. Very cool level.
Lithium: Good man! I knew you had it in you!
Green: I only wish you could keep them on. I've gotten Shines with Yoshi and Shines with glasses, but I have yet to get a Shine with glasses and Yoshi. He looks kind of funny getting Shines with sunglasses...
Is there some kind bonus for pimping the sunglasses? Kinda weird to just dim the screen.
Let's just say that you get less than you did in Mario 64 for getting all the Shines.
I've only found two things, but I'll let you guys see them for yourselves.
What is up with the blue film that comes up every once in a while? A perfectly circular area in the center of the screen will be just fine, everything else has a translucent blue covering it. It's almost as if the game's trying to tell you someone is watching you.
Is this intentional? Part of the story? Some odd glitch?
That's when the camera's in a building because you're standing close to a wall. The wall becomes translucent blue with a circle in the middle.
I just found an interesting glitch. I was falling to my death beneath Pianta Village when I first pressed L to butt-stomp then R to hover. I managed to do both at once and fell through the "death trigger" intact. I landed on a wide sky blue floor (with invisible walls at the horizontal edges of the level) far below the bottom of the village. Odd.
I missed a jump on the pirate ships and so I tried to use the jetpack to compensate, but it didn't work. Water came out, and I was definitely in jetpack mode because two streams of water were shooting down, but I just kept falling as if the jetpack wasn't active.
I've also now fallen through angled floors countless times. This is by far the glitchiest Nintendo made game I've ever played.
I have yet to fall through an angled floor.
Aside from my little problem with the last boss, I haven't fallen through the floor once yet. *shrugs*Quote:

Try the port level (ships and cranes), go up into the tower and do that secret level with all the rotating blocks. Just stand there and let the block rotate, when it starts to get pretty steep try to walk up it, you'll fall right through it. Sometimes you land on the inside of the polygon, and you can then jump back up.
This is where I fell through the floors the most.
Lithium falls through floors, but I manage to walk on thin air.
I love it!
Sunshine pisses me off. Fortunately, those GCN controllers are sturdy as hell, and can stand my wrath.
Getting Yoshi to jump from boat-to-boat and onto that little island is a pain-in-teh ass as it is. That fucking lily-pad stream stage it leads up to sucks more than any game-task ever!
It took me about 30 min. to get the fuckin' shine!
Now how the fuck am I supposed to get the shine on top of the ferris wheel after I get rid of the electric Koopas?
* Zerodash SMS fustration +80 *
All I did was a back flip towards the wall and then a wall jump towards the top of one of the ferris wheel pods, I used the hovering mechanism to land perfectly on top. Once the wheel gets to the top you can jump to claim your prize.
D
I keep slipping off the pods...:(
Just jump on it when they are coming up, its easy.
I never have falling through floor problems, odd.
It may have some odd glitches but there are games that are much worse.
As for the Lillypad river, just walk on the wall. Ride a lilly pad and try to get all the Red Coins you can, jump of on the border wall, walk back and there should be a new lilly pad waiting for you. Once I found that out I did it with ease.

I'm only at 38 Shines.
Anyone care to tell me what the Holy Hell I'm supposed to do to defeat the damned firey Chomps in Pianta Villiage? I shoot water at them...pull on their tale...and they go flying. Beyond this I have no idea what to do.
Give them a "bath"... Remember the small pond near the center of the town? ;)
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks, Dorikyasu!
I have 52 shines and no more levels are opening up for me. :( I hope there's more... so far Noki Bay and Sirena Beach are the two newest ones and I completed Noki Bay already... I wanna see those fire chomps!!
See the tall tower with giant Shine (covered with black sludge) in the back of Delphino Plaza? Get up to the top of it to find your next destination... ;)
Ooh, thanks Dorikyasu! I found it weird that no more levels were opening up like the first three with the sludges overtaking certain landmarks and your cleaning it up revealed a new level...
Also, I LOVE how many references there are in this game to earlier Mario games. Something that Mario 64 lacked and made very "un-Mario." They even brought back the amazing tight rope/hanging/swinging move from Donkey Kong (for Game Boy)! And what the heck is up with those short round enemies (and the ones that have wings occasionally). They seem like they're trying to replace the Goombas! And the Electro-Koopas look very "un-Koopa" like, I wonder if Miyamoto will bring back the good ol' Koopa Troopas, Shyguys, and Goombas into a 3D Mario game.
Im on my 119 shine sprite. but for some reason i cant find another blue coin
I actually been exchanging the blue coins alot in the racoon hut the second time i exchanged them i had 193 blue coins. But if im not mistaken my previous exchanging i had 231 but i cant find no more blue coins
Could this mess me up on getting the 120th shine sprite
Thanks in advance
