As much as it's old news to PC gamers, the video streaming and recording on XBone and PS4 are pretty novel to me. Whereas achievements used to mean something, it feels like the ability to share cool moments in video form means that much more.
So yeah, what will this round of consoles be associated with? How will they push games forward?
I've been enjoying streaming a lot more than I thought I would. The social, always connected stuff has impressed me.

Definitely more social online environment gaming.
Need for Speed Rivals, Titanfall, Destiny, The Crew, and The Division are doing that sort of online driven gameplay and I even think Forza 5's drivatar's are a pretty cool attempt at simulating other players. Outside of that there's also unfortunate problems that transfer over from last gen like games always being in flux due to updates, micro-transactions, and games that just don't know at what revision to stop such as with fighting games.

PCs have nothing to do with it. Tablets and mobile will overtake these consoles relatively quickly, and that will be made easier by the fact that neither of them do anything to advance actually playing a game.
I'd like to think that the really cool defining stuff is stuff I can't yet predict.
If we remove the console criterion, the obvious answer for the next ~10 years is VR.
I still don't get how that's PC-specific. The Rift is a standard HDMI input, so if a developer wants Rift support there's no reason not to add it as an available option.

VR is a nerd feature until proven otherwise. In the end we're talking about a $300 peripheral, time will tell if it catches on.

Sorry, but I disagree. Good VR adds something to gaming that wasn't there before, and its easily accessible not just by the gaming crowd but also the general public. The real question is whether it gets used properly or goes the way of motion controls, which also showed something new and effective but was mis-used so badly that it's now a complete joke.
Also, 90s VR was garbage, pure and simple. Turns out it's a valid idea when the tech actually works.

There's nothing to disagree with, it really is an open question as to whether people outside of game forums will buy in.
Exactly, until the tech is dirt cheap it's not catching on. Sure there's a niche market for it, but at 300 bucks it's not going to become the next big thing any time soon. Even then, it's most going to be gamers. Joe Public isn't REALLY going to get into VR until they can hit a button and turn their living room into front row seats at a broadway show, or similar shit.
Oculus Rift seems more like it'll be useful for military or scientific purposes rather than gaming.
I wouldn't judge until it's consumer model is available to everyone. It may not be great for a fast-paced shooter, but a slower survival horror game will be intense and game-changing. PC people will be the guinea pigs, but I can see it being embraced firmly in the future on most platforms.
If it's nurtured properly, VR could be the biggest leap in entertainment since color TV. I still think the technology isn't quite there for it to be this generation that popularises it, but i feel like cheap, small and light VR capable headsets will be common place and will replace TV and smart phones completely one day. Even in its current state, they just need to figure out how to shoot video in 360 degrees, then it completely trumps a TV for everything except shared viewing.
Gotta disagree on that. Film needs to show a specific image in a specific way. 360-degree viewing wouldn't allow for that. The Rift as a cheap single-viewer 3D tv, on the other hand, might actually work.

I figure it will be something out of left field like better educational software. There was a game a few years back that taught chemical bonding in a real fun way. You also have the rocksmith games that grew out of the demand for a real guitar game because of the success of RockBand / guitar hero.
Add in how easy it is to make indie games now, fewer barriers to entry with downloadable market places, and disfranchised graduates that have lost faith in higher education and the job market, and I think you have a primed market for a resurgence of good educational games.

Reboots
Remasters/remakes
Indie games
It just seems there's shrinking room for devs like Platinum, etc. who make niche games on a heavy budget. That world will be gone by the end of this gen.
The final death of physical media for anything but AAA games will hit in the next year or so.

Sonic Racing is a good split screen racing game (my 4 yr old plays me in it all the time). Lego Batman 2 and Lego Marvel are both great split screen games we play. I am with you in hoping they expand on quality splitscreen multiplayer games moving forward.Quote:

I pretty much only play games with local co-op. I know that makes me really old compared to online play, but it never really jived for me.
Online play is so much fun with the right people.
Fighting games, maybe not so much because OMG MY 3 FRAMES, but GTA 5? Happy Wars? Worms? Yes.

That's me, some random dude reselling clearance crap that is an entire generation behind. Your average person isn't even fully committed to Blu-ray yet, let alone digital. There might be a massive shift in sales towards digital if the price is right, but every normal sized game this entire generation will have some physical market if it wants one.

There's lots of open world stuff too, that design choice seems to keep expanding to even games like Metal Gear.
Nothing can stop it now that game makers know they can make more money on it than with single game sales or subscriptions.
