I just passed the hidden Treetops area of Guacamelee and I think I fell in love with this kind-of-endearingly-racist game. It seriously deserves its own thread.

Fighting and hopping around is crazy satisfying towards the end of this thing. It starts a little slow and easy, but those special moves just give the game more methods to punch you in the face.
I think this is going to be a fun Hard Mode game.

Yeah. This game is super good. I almost feel bad for only paying $3.74 for it.
I was really surprised at how good this game was. I wish there were more intricate fights like the second last boss, it feels like you only get a taste of how good the combat could potentially be. It's still a fantastic game though.
I missed the $3.75 sale.
I was hoping it would return, but no luck so far.
Humble Store Winter Sale still has that price! Go get it!
I bought this back when I thought it would be a PS3 exclusive and have enjoyed it quite a bit.
I stopped playing it though, not for lack of interest but I had a lot on my plate. I do plan on getting back to this at some point though.
I turned on my PS3 to play some Metal Gear 2.
Ended up grabbing my CrossSave of Guacamelee from my Vita, buying the DLC and getting the Platinum and most of the trophies from the first DLC.
What a fantastic game. Hard mode just makes it BETTER (aside from one or two ridiculous parts).

I will buy this version too. I liked the game that much and got the original one super cheap.
I have the original on Steam. Never played it. It's way down the list
You can beat it in like 4 hours at most. There's a "true" ending that takes a little while longer. The thing's fantastic. I'm hoping that this new version will be DLC for the original, as well as a standalone.
I am super down. Bought it for PS3/Vita and then PC. Love the game and will happily support it.
I think I read it has like 30% more content, so that is what, 2000 more terrible game references?
That's really the only bad thing about it. Easily ignored.
Go play Guacamelee, Joust. It's worth it.

Oh my god. You all suck. Guacamelee is fucking awesome. The references are lame but they're just goddamn pictures in background. Ignore them and focus on grappling fools, turning into a chicken, and being impressed by how the moves you unlock are used for both navigation and combat.
The battle this year will be fierce indeed.

I guess I just find it weird that you consider a standard thing of the past like twenty years or so in games to suddenly be impressive.
I can't think of any games that have done it as effectively as Guacamelee. I mean, I guess there's that Mega Man bullshit where you can use certain weapons to break barriers or create stepping stones, but that has nothing on Guacamelee.

In a game like Metroid, you get stuff that feels like an ability, an attack, but never a strong balance of the two. Missiles are great weapons that are just arbitrary keys. Same with different beams. Super bombs are good at clearing debris, but kinda unintuitive to employ in a fight. In that sense, Guacamelee seems (?) to balance the attack/ability qualities - each one feels equal parts useful in getting to places and smacking dudes around. Something like that?
Exactly! When you get a new ability, your mind wanders off onto two different tangents... "I see how I could integrate this into my combos!" and "I see how I can use this to reach new places by timing it correctly (in addition to the overly obvious colour coded doors)." For instance, the uppercut acts as a launcher in combat, but also works as a sort of double jump - using it mid-air gives you just enough height to reach new platforms.
BVork is doing a good job explaining things!
This game also does a good job of making you feel like a badass towards the end of the game when you have all your powers. The game isn't about exploring a map as much as it is about the combat and traversal of the world. That's where the game really shines.

Using uppercuts as a double-jump has been around since forever, not to mention attacks as air control, dashing/sliding attacks being used in the air to explore, the infamous grappling hooks being used to both get around and throw enemies around, and so on. ChainDive is the only thing popping in my head right this minute that did all that stuff forever ago but I know there's older games that had those mechanics as well.Quote:

That was a safe bet. That genre should have ended as soon as SotN was released.
It's a legitimate genre. Many modern games in it just happen to defeat the point of non-linear exploratory design by pointing exactly where to go.
It's really a silly thing most of the time. At least some games like the recent Thief 4 let you turn off the waypoints.
