I watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy again while in my 5 day sick cocoon. There is a bar scene where the Hobbits toast and shit gets all sentimental. The Hobbits, except for Sam (the only bro) hold their beer mugs by the handle, making them look like fancy boys out on the town. Do any of you do this? Why? It just seems like it's way more difficult. Hot beverages don't count.
I normally drink from bottles or rocks glasses, but I've held mugs by the handle before. Can't say it's a thing I've really noticed or have a reason for.
Maybe they hold them that way to toast with insurance of not smashing fingers?
Perhaps to lessen the bloody mess that is excessively enthusiastic toasting?

For me the thumb is gripping the mug about 1/3rd of the way around. In the mug pictured I might have my index finger on top of that handle. Depends on the sizing.
I think the point of the mug is like a stemmed wine glass, to prevent your body temperature from changing that of the drink. That's the only possible reason I could see for holding the glass by these "handles". Personally, I could give a flying fuck at a rolling donut.
I hate holding onto handles.
