In Australia, beer is almost always served in chilled schooner glasses. I think the general idea is that it'll be finished before it gets warm anyway. The only places it's common to see mug style glasses is German / Bavarian pubs, of which there are a handful in Sydney. For some reason pints never really caught on here.

Cold beer in general is definitely an Australian thing. I think its because of our climate crossed with it being institutionalised by beer advertising (I'd post a VB ad but I'm on my phone). Warm beer is insulting to most Australians.

Shitty beer is best served cold. Dulls the tastebuds.

I was simply disagreeing with a common notion I hear around here that "All good beer is warm rawr brooklyn hipster for life!!!". There are plenty of quite good beers (usually foreign) best served at colder temperatures that would have their flavor somewhat diminished by the end of the beer if you were to hold the glass directly with your hand and not slam the beer down your throat. Good bartenders at good beer places will give you the appropriate glass for your beer.

There's exceptions to anything, but I'm sticking with "extremely cold beer is usually masking shitiness".

Yeller speaks the truth. This reminds me of an article I read about using blue food coloring on your tongue to physically determine the depth of your palate. Basically a "Super taster" test. I shared it with all the QA guys at flying dog and they were all too chickenshit to take it.
