Splatter enemies and claim your turf as the ink-spewing, squid-like characters called Inklings in Nintendo's new third-person action shooter game for the Wii U console. Challenge your friends in chaotic four-on-four matches, in which the goal is to get your ink on as many places as possible and claim your turf, all while strategically submerging yourself in your team's colors and blasting your enemies. This is a colorful and chaotic online third-person action shooter – exclusively on Wii U.*
FEATURES:
Team up and take on other teams in an action-filled battle to cover the level with as much ink as possible. Spray walls to access hard-to-reach areas.
Covering more territory with ink unlocks powered-up super weapons that can be used to attack rivals or cover more turf.
Strategy is everything. Defeat enemies to splatter them in an explosion of ink, covering more turf for your team. But choose wisely: Players who only go after the enemy might find their turf redecorated in their enemies' colors.
Refill ink tanks, hide from opponents or move faster by turning into a squid and diving into the ink with the tap of a button.
Select between multiple control options on the Wii U GamePad controller, including using gyroscopic controls to look around, allowing for better aiming and control.
Hop online and battle in four-on-four matches.
When i first saw it i wasn't too hot on it because it looks like a Nickelodeon commercial, but the more i see, the better it looks! this will be a lot of fun. that ink hopping looks especially neat

This looks terrible in actual play:
You have to tilt the GamePad to aim, and you can't even tell who is winning until the round ends? Anyone wanting a cute 3PS should be playing Garden Warfare instead of looking at this.

Salsashark
Yes. If you need irrefutable proof of just how far Nintendo can get its head up its own ass, there you have it. They are THE company that knows how to make games feel good and comfortable, and yet someone there is convinced its worth it to make tilt camera controls because they can. They must know better in their hearts.
Anyway, I'm sure there will be better control options as well and they're just trying to showcase the Wii U 'innovations'.

I think the "not knowing who is winning thing" is obviously a design choice to create tension and anticipation for when the score is revealed. Think about how this reveal would go down if you were playing amongst and against friends, it would be pretty awesome.
The guy who was having trouble controlling it looked like a moron.
This game doesn't interest me.

In the video it looked blatantly obvious that you could look down at the coverage map and get a rough idea of whose winning, or if it's close.

Pretty sure I remember E3 impressions that said you were able to switch to dual stick aiming, it just wasn't at all apparent to most players at the time.

No, you don't have to use the gyros to aim. If you watch the video, the two people on the right have that turned off. Also I believe the heavy weapons still aren't in the public versions of the game at this point, so gameplay should be more varied than it looks here.

Not going to criticize the effort because Nintendo needs to make something, but I doubt this will have a real MP community.

:P Even if there haven't been several reports of the option to control other than motion control, every single recent Nintendo game having several ways to control should've been the hint. I need(ed at one point, maybe they fixed this) to start NES Remix with the Gamepad and DKCR Wii required you to shake a god damn remote control to roll, so I'm not big on Nintendo's control options.

Just to clarify, I think this game looks really cool but gyro camera control is generally a bad idea and clunky, and Nintendo make the farthest things from clunky games so it's weird that they even bother pushing control schemes like this sometimes. But hey, that's nothing new and as I and a bunch of people already said, no one is going to be forced to use it so who really cares? Game looks wonderful and I hope they get the budget to go all-out with it and do even crazier stuff than we've been led to expect. <3 u Nintendo

Yusuke Amano explains why there's no voice chat in this online shooter
From the latest issue of Edge:
Quote:
Not that you’ll be able to hear any cussing yourself: Splatoon has no voice chat now, and it never will. You can blame the infamous toxicity of online players for that. “This is coming from personal experience,” Amano says. “When I played online games, I didn’t like the negativity I got and people telling me, ‘You’re crap. Go away.’ So we wanted to focus on the positive aspects of online gaming.”
Amano admits this approach means missing out on a feature that makes online play stand out for many players. “I don’t want you to misunderstand—I’m not denying having chat in an online game does contribute to fun. But, as we’ve said, we want to grab new people.
Aww, so someone made him cry and now no one gets to chat. LOL Nintendo.

Don't forget almost of the others are manboy waifu nostalgia totems. Squid boy hasn't had time to become Rosebud for 35-year-old Lunchables eaters yet.
Expensive figures for characters nobody has any attachment to that can be used to unlock levels nobody has seen in a game nobody has played pre-sell out internationally in a matter days. This portends failure to you? Sounds like more than enough excitement to give a bundle a shot to me. At least as much as any Infamous grundlebundle.

We'll find out soon enough. It can't do any worse than that ugly ass Codename: STEAM or Fossil Fighters.
21 Apr 2015, 06:11 PM
Finch
Neither of those did well at all. Fossil Fighters wasn't expected to, but STEAM did really poorly and they were trying to push that one.
I kind of expect Splatoon miibos to be easier to find though since it's a game they want to sell and not some obscure character they're grinding their teeth about releasing as they all sell out to people way older than the market they actually want to sell to.
also bundling it doesn't really indicate anything besides it's a game they want people to buy and they hope people will buy. They have millions of these things sitting in warehouses. This'll sit in Best Buy until they sell them all and there probably won't be all that many
but none of that is here or there because Splatoon isn't going to sell because it's a new property and a shooting game that isn't about men cussing and shooting people with bullets and people will find some strange delight as they yell "BOMBA" without reading every other post where everyone else was doing the same

If I could pay extra for better Wii U performance, I already would have. The fact that I can't is one of the reasons I can't get excited about paying for more storage. Another is the horrific VC support. Another is the fact that my digital games are NSMBU and DKC:TF, so I can already play the games I actually want to play, like Pikmin 3 and SM3DW.

What's that? Games that aren't on the Pee Cee that aren't Konami? Oh my.
Five maps and a bunch of free DLC later on. This game doesn't sound finished. Has there ever been a case where an online multiplayer game had a poor launch and then rebounded? There's no way I'll pick it up at launch thanks to that paltry amount of content, and if there's a large group that behaves like me, it'll never get a significant multiplayer population - so why would anyone pick it up later on, even if Nintendo fleshes it out with DLC?
