It's amazing how much more I like Metroidvanias that aren't Metroid or Castlevania games. THIS GAME RULES!
They're SLUTs. We've been over this.
Couldn't they just be called an adventure game?
Exactly which Metroid games (2D) have RPG elements to them? Metroid may not have been the first but it damn sure made the genre popular. Castlevania jumped on its back long after the fact.
I totally understand calling the Castlevania games in that style Metroidvania games. I don't understand how it came to be the genre definition though.
Ori is certainly more Metroid than (Later) Castlevania for sure. There is no level mechanic, only upgrades that could technically be farmed if you really wanted in the first room. The big abilities are "Locked" in the trees.
I don't even want to call the later Castlevania games "Castlevania," let alone try to name a sub-genre after them.
