Goddamn yes.
When I watched the original a few weeks ago and saw Laura say "We'll meet again in 25 years" I thought hmm
hmm indeed
I am losing my shit over here.
whoa
Yes... it's as if my completion of Deadly Premonition brought this forth from the ether.
Same with my marathoning Twin Peaks for the first time! I hope for less season two weirdness and more original season goodness.
This is great news! Mark Frost is involved too!
THAT MUSIC.
I guess it's time to watch Twin Peaks again.
Wow, there have been bits and bobs of info dribbling in but I never thought this would actually happen. Just as I'm going through the show again with the bluray set.
Excited and nervous to see what happens with this.
I am ready to watch this and question wtf I just saw.
I don't want a new twin peaks in 2016. I want it in 1993.
2016+premium cable = complete creative freedom for Lynch and Frost.
I think he means it set in 93 and everyone would wear makeup to de-age a quarter century.

The Diane Tapes!
So this was cancelled.
you suck
Well, Lynch won't be directing, as he's confirmed on Twitter.
https://twitter.com/DAVID_LYNCH
Now we wait to see if Showtime wants to destroy your childhood.
I still have faith that this will happen with Lynch. I think it's a public power-play to get more money. If there is no Lynch, there is no Twin Peaks and Showtime knows that deep down.
Or we can have a shit show on the level of season two which would be a fun train wreck in it's own right. Either way, I'm down.
It's not necessarily the end of the world. I don't really have any interest without Lynch's involvement, but he has apparently already written the first nine episodes with Mark Frost. Most of Twin Peaks wasn't directed by him anyway, just all the best shit and the movie. It's possible that other directors could capture some of the spirit of the show, the talent behind TV has gotten a whole lot better since the first and second seasons aired.
I'm starting to get that "this thing is never actually coming out" feeling.
Honestly, it's 2015. You get the people who did True Detective to do Twin Peaks, and they're going to do it better than Lynch wants to.
Wait... Sin Nombre was awesome! Is that guy now involved with this??
Tweeted by Showtime:
And it will reportedly be longer than the previously announced nine hours.Quote:
#TwinPeaks pre-production starts now!! Every episode will be directed by @David_Lynch! #Showtime #damngoodcoffee
I said this on twitter, but mark my words - this show will not happen. this stuff with Lynch was just the beginning of the trouble.
What are you thinking? Is this gonna be like Jodorovsky and Dune? Keep looking for that perfect situation until the whole thing just pops under pressure?
I think that their fallback is a Jodo/Dune scenario tbh - way to recoup the inevitable loss this is going to take. Put it this way - a good portion of these actors haven't worked with any regularity since the 90s. There were so many issues with cast members the first time around, I find it hard to believe that everyone is going to settle back in, hunky dory. I think one of the reasons why the show went for as long as it did is that Lynch DIDNT direct the majority of it. It allowed some of the less talented, more method actors (face it - like 3/4ths of the cast) to sort of not have to take on so much responsibility in the show. Not to mention, BOB, Jack Nance, and Major Briggs are dead. Those are three key characters/actors who really added a LOT to the show.
I'm saying this 100% as a Lynch fan, major TP fan, etc. - I just really don't think most people (including the actors themselves, and Showtime) want "Fire Walk With Me: The Series." It sounds good from the sidelines and I'm sure a lot of them are hyped to have work again, but my faith in seeing this project come to term is waning.
To be honest, I would rather Lynch was making something original than this revival, but I just need him to be making something other than music. Whatever it will be, it will be new Lynch. And that will be amazing in some way.
I didn't know there was a doc on Nance! Anyone have it?
I'm standing by the notion that anybody OTHER than Lynch should be directing this.
I wouldn't even watch it if that were the case. Why would you want that?
The directors Twin Peaks has influenced are a lot more interesting visually than Actual Twin Peaks at this point. I think Lynch should write it, I don't think this is as good as it could be with him directing it.
Recent example: Inland Empire is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life.
Twin Peaks with True Detective production values would be amazing.
Twin Peaks's soap opera production was part of the point, though. And Inland Empire is awesome.
I get that, but it's not a point that needs to be made again. There's nothing lost in making it well, commenting on 30 year old production values doesn't mean anything in 2015.
TOTALLY disagree on Inland Empire, you can keep it. Harry Dean Stanton was the only highlight.
I assume that's EXACTLY what you're looking for.
I think we are just looking for lynch to be lynch. You know that thing he does where who the fuck knows? That thing.
If Lynch wasn't directing, I would probably sit this out and Twin peaks is my favorite tv series ever (except maybe Star trek TOS?)
Check this cast out:

i just posted on my Facebook how this is very lol, and will be bad. It's like they gave a part to every single person who auditioned.
Michael Cera as Owl#2
Jennifer Jason Leigh as David Duchovny.
Coop is looking pretty good!
still skeptical as hell.
Jim Belushi in there bums me out. Skeleton John Belushi would have been a better actor.
This starts in a few days. I've started marathoning the series again to catch up on everything. I'm cautiously optimistic, I'm a big fan of all of David Lynches work, so at the very least it should be enjoyable on that level. I don't think it will hold up to the old series or Fire Walk With Me but it will be nice to see some arthouse TV again.
I'm in the same boat... Except there is no way im watching season two... Jesus.
The first and last episodes of season 2 are amazing!
Yeah and you have 20 episodes of James riding around on a bike in between.
I would say it's more than that. There's a really rough patch early in the season, but when it rights itself it's something to see.
I re-watched the entire thing a couple of years ago, so I'm just going to do FWWM tomorrow. I'm with arjue- whatever this is, it's David Lynch doing his thing with creative control. I can't fucking wait.
Season 2 went off the rails in a weird and fun way besides jame's bullshit story. I may finally give the secrets of Twin Peaks a read today. Just subbed to Showtime. Free for 30 days streaming if anyone doesn't have it.
I never get the love of this series. 1st season was good, but 2nd is meh. I will watch this though and hope for the best.
I've still never watched Fire Walk With Me. Is it on any streaming service? I'd like to watch it before the new series.
FWWM is the most Lynchian aspect of the series. It, imo, is a little bit of a tough watch - a lot of trauma is depicted. However, if you haven't watched the series in awhile it may not have the same impact. I watched it twice after finishing the series, and its always a bit if a punch in the gut.
I have absolutely no allusions that this will be good, I'm hoping for watchable. Hopes are not high.
First four episodes are already up on Amazon! It was hard to tell if they were going to make the west coast wait for 9pm as well. I still need to rewatch FWWM so I won't be back to this thread for a while.
*shrug* eh.
I think it's hard to rate something like this without seeing it through. I'm waiting it out for now.
I watched the first 2 episodes. I think it will be a hard pill to swallow for people who aren't fans of modern David Lynch. It feels much more like Inland Empire and Lost Highway than Twin Peaks.
This so much, Its as if he is purposely making the "Twin Peaks" characters annoying on purpose. Go into this expecting David Lynch, not Twin Peaks. Then again, I still have one more episode to watch so things can change quickly. No matter what, I'm along for the ride.
I respect Lynch's work a lot. Loved Mulholland Drive, absolutely adore Blue Velvet. The others I'm on and off with. I know it's so uncool to admit it, but I miss the whimsy and normie aspects of the original series. It's not that I mind the mystical and Lynchian aspects, I just kind of miss the human condition aspects. So far there wasn't really a lot I could attach to, character-wise - everyone is (in typical Lynch fashion) kind of behind glass. sort of spoiler? I wasn't looking forward to this as a reboot. I can absolutely appreciate it as a Lynch piece, it's not terrible or anything of the sort. It's very compelling, it's a great mystery so far. But, I miss the humanity of the original. *shrug*
I love every second of this bullshit so far. I don't think it's out of step at all with the original series, I was expecting something reprehensible like Inland Empire but no, this is pretty much in line with the odder aspects of the original.
Rewatching the last half of the last episode of season 2 and then Fire Walk With Me is the correct choice going into things.
I really like how they clearly have a really awesome budget for effects, but will intentionally throw some odd/bad ones in once in a while (especially with the more supernatural elements), it shouldn't work but it really kinda does. Heightens the WTF.
The musical guests on the credits have been pretty great.
I understand the "this isn't Twin Peaks" gripe. It's not shot like the old series at all--that whole soap opera aesthetic is gone, there's very little music, it's much different tonally, etc. I love it, though. I don't think the soap opera schtick would have held up in 2017.
The first 10 min of episode 3 is batshit crazy, and I like it.
So far I've only met one other person who dislikes it as strongly as I do. I appreciate that it's something from Lynch but i just wish the twin peaks name wasn't attached to it. All the positive elements of the show just aren't there. Mr jackpots was funny tho.
SPOILERS ALL OVER
I am loving this as well, sorry to disappoint Sats. The way we just pick up right where we left off and start rocketing into the sun is amazing. The imagery is wonderful.
There's so much lore, I don't even know where to start. I guess the most interesting thing to me is that someone is trying to kill Coopers, or Black Lodge residents, or potential hosts. The kid watching the glass box thought the owner was a billionaire, and Darya claimed they were going to "split half a million" for killing Bad Coop. Could be the same person. The glass box also seemed to keep Dale from entering the "real" world straightaway and detoured him to the Purple Zone instead.
The numbers peppered throughout are also a thing. I think 430/ Richard and Linda is the only bit we don't have any clues for yet. 119 could just be 911 backwards, but I would be a little surprised if it were that basic.
The effect when Dougie evaporated in the Red Room was incredible, absolutely loved that.
Second episode worried me a little, I wasn't a fan of a lot of the stuff in the red room, but the rest of the series has more than made up for it. The way some of the effects look is really odd, they'll look fake as hell but it just adds to the surrealism.
No worries, I'm in the extreme minority here. I'll give the next ep a try tonight :/
....and it was nearly unwatchable! Lynch sure loves to make his female characters in this completely one dimensional and insufferable. That's very disappointing bc in the majority of his works, the women were very interesting and remarkable.
And the male characters are well-rounded and believable? That's just Twin Peaks imo. The series was, after all, a faux soap opera. Of course the characters are going to be flat.
It's worse than flat, they are just obnoxious. All the female leads of the original had a purpose, and they weren't just there for the purpose of screeching at the male leads, or "eye candy." It was laughable when the twiggy tall girl FBI agent was being ogled by the FBI agents when she bent over - I mean, she had no ass to speak of, lol. All the women in every scene so far were there as silent supporters to a main male character, or to bitch at them, or to sit and look pretty. I mean I usually don't give a fuck if women are objectified in movie roles, that's entertainment and it's what sells. But for Lynch? Come on....he's smarter than this. He's created some of the most iconic female characters of all time. TBH I feel like he's actively trying to ruin the series in sort of a Buddhist detachment ritual, which is fine for him, but it's boring. We're 5 episodes in and Cooper is still drooling on himself and we went to space, briefly. Like I said, I appreciate art for art's sake, but this is just dumb and lame.
I know, I know, "don't watch it then, Sats!" But, I'm on the internet so i'm gonna bitch.
I hear you, but a depiction is not an endorsement. Amanda Seyfried is just an accessory to drug guy, yes, but the show realizes this is shitty behavior.
It's Twin Peaks. You're not going to find a heck of a lot of Positive Roles for any gender, yeah?
It's not just a statement on characters being positive, because obviously all the characters were flawed in the original, but there's a line between "anti-hero" and "completely useless accessory filling space." There is just no depth to anyone here, it's particularly obvious when it comes the female roles (who so far have been needlessly sexualized, incessant naggers, or just plain silent.) I think the only compassionate female characterization so far has been in the last episode with Norma, who actually showed a vague personality.
With that said, the blankness stems to the male roles as well, though it's not as obvious as with the female cast. This article on The Verge covered a lot of my beef with it so far, including Michael Cera's "Incomprehensibly Awful" appearance. Yup, I too have seen the famous photo of Marlon Brando and have also read The Motorcycle Diaries. Clever. yup.
I'm just not getting this. It's the worst of Lynch.
I fell asleep during Cera's speech. I felt refreshed when I woke up.
I thought it was pretty funny.
Sounds like some of the writers at Verge need to stick to movies with Hulks in them.
This is getting mad at a Dali painting because it doesn't look as real as those celebrity portraits people at mall kiosks draw.Quote:
A great deal of the new*Twin Peaks*doesn’t feel like it’s using modern technology; there’s no attempt to make things like The Arm look slick and digital and well-integrated with its background, or to make Cooper traveling via electrical outlet look natural.
I know I come to Lynch movies for their slick digital effects.
GRAPHICS: 6/10
I don't like this article but I do take your point. I get irritated with the shallow characters, too. I am upset, for example, at Andy and Lucy's descent from lovable oafs to abject morons.
EXACTLY.
And yeah the filming methodology is probably least on my list of grievances that I will air at Festivus. Though the green screened red room annoyed me a tad.
About halfway through the most recent episode, I couldn't stop thinking "Satsuki is right about this show."
I still like it and am dying for the next episode, but I constantly complain that television shows too willingly subordinate themselves to plot, character, relatability, and snappy pacing. Now I have a show that couldn't care less about any and it's starting to test my patience and, frankly, taste.
There are two gruesome acts in the last week's episode. Maybe it's Puritan of me to insist scenes like these are in some way earned. These were entirely unearned and in poor taste.
I am absolutely not going to say I told you so bc I think we're coming up on episode 8 or 9 and other people are starting to realize the show is not going anywhere.
I believe Lynch made a valiant effort to annoy his fans and it's not working on most yet, but it will soon. I haven't seen the last few episodes and I'm really not missing it in my life, and the hype train has completely died down. So....*shrug* it was worth a try but it just didn't work for me.
Why would you expect the show to go anywhere? Lynch never wanted the original to go anywhere.
The original was more than gratuitous violence and revolving door of characters abandoned as quickly as they're introduced. Last week's episode a half hour of the Joneses and a half hour of junk. That cointoss drugboy scene was interminable.
I haven't watched this yet, I just can't wrap my head around expecting a cohesive story that actually goes somewhere from Lynch.
Whatevs, I'm still loving it.
Floor sweeping at its finest.
Fuck this shit.
I've been a Michael Haneke fan for a long time. I came prepared.
yeeeeeeeap.
Things are moving and revealing themselves, albeit at a slow pace. Last episode, Dougie thwarting the midgets assasination attempt was reported by the news where he is likely to be recognised (he is even wearing his old suit), the body from the first episode is identified, evil Coop got out of jail, we discovered that evil coop probably sexually assaulted Dianne, and they hinted that he may have assaulted Aubrey Horn while she was comatose. They also setup the return of Harry Truman.
I am absolutely FUCKING in love with this show. 10x exceeding my expectations. Not even kidding. Absolutely soaking it up with love.
Episode 8 was 95% EraserHead. I simply can't believe that this got made. I can't stop watching. Not because it's good, but its finally gone off the rails completely and I love it. Its FUCKING WANKER LYNCH GARBAGE. I LOVE WANKER LYNCH GARBAGE!
There's a lot to theorize of who these people are and what is being born and NULEAR BLASTS!!! And that damn BobBug...GROSS!!
I haven't watched the new one yet but the suggestion that we weren't already off the rails has me afraid to.
:/
Best episode of TV since Ozymandias IMO.
Watch it. It's incredible. Incredible that such an hour actually aired on essentially mainstream television. Then again, while the original series sometimes gets characterized as essentially a whacky soap opera (it often was), many segments were really stunning...pretty terrifying...and it was mindblowing that they aired on plain old network television. Equally mindblowing was that vast swaths of the viewing public pretty much ate it up.
Anyway, I thought the episode was amazing. I don't know anything about sound design or visual production techniques, but the whole episode just oozes...I don't, know...craft? True for the whole series to date.
Lynch is a freaking warlock.
Got a light?
Completely spot on episode, I like the show a lot so far and I still had no idea they had that in them.
Wellp, that was the most amazing hour of television I've ever seen and maybe the best hour of Lynch I've ever seen.
Is this worth picking up again, then?
Yes. This episode makes those last two episodes of the original series look like The Waltons.
I can't imagine anyone who likes anything Lynch has done disliking this episode.
That frog/insect thing is very disturbing.
