This was very recently discussed in the correct thread.
Nope. It was discussed in the Xbox One thread, which in turn became the shit on Xbox because you can't swap out an internal hard drive.
Nice try though.
Edit: For the OP.
I use a 32GB Flash Drive which doubles my storage.
To answer your question, now that this thread isn't closed for no reason. Pretty much any external hard drive will work. If the one you pick isn't self powered then you'll need to buy a USB Y Cable that will take up 2 ports on the back of your Wii U. I personally would stay away from Seagate, they have terrible reliability. I bought a few drives, some for a server I built, and 1 external for my Wii U, and flash forward to just 2 years later and the last of the Seagate drives just died Saturday morning. Your mileage is going to vary with a Flash Drive. Not all of them are created equally. If you do go that route make sure you get something with a really fast write speed. When MK8 first launched a bunch of people on NeoGAF were complaining about crashes, all with flash drives. It's believed that the drives aren't fast enough to write the replay data to. Thus causing crashes.
And if you do go with a flash, just make sure MK8 stays internal and move a different game to flash to make room.
I bought a Seagate external drive, it was one of the 5 that Nintendo suggest work best with the Wii U
