It's cool they're doing this, even if I don't like Majora all that much. What irks me though is when gamers screech that FINALLY Nintendo's doing something smart...something that will make them boatloads of cash.
Ignoring the fact that MM sold worse than OoT by half on N64.
Ignoring that OoT 3DS sales were roughly half that of N64.
Meaning a best-case scenario is Majora's Mask on 3DS sells even worse than all of that.
This isn't some killer business move. It's fanservice for a niche of a niche that thinks itself bigger and more important than it really is. Which isn't the game's fault, really. So still cool it's coming out!
I haven't seen any of these mythical Nintendo fanboys who think that Majora's Mask will make a ton of money. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. But that's beside the point. Whether something sells less or more than something else is meaningless. What matters is return on investment, and do you honestly think Nintendo will fail to at least recoup development costs of MM 3DS?
Oh no, I don't think they'll lose money on it, that's for sure. I'm just saying this is more about putting it out for its small fanbase, than as some money-printing maneuver.
(I don't have statistics, but let's just say I read too many game-forum comments)
Calling a Zelda release a "fanservice niche of a niche" is about as dumb as screeching about Nintendo's killer business moves on the internet.
Also a rerelease of a N64 game selling half the original is damned impressive.
Look, I really like me some Zelda and culturally, I know Link is iconic to the public at large. But to think Zelda as a game series has been relevant as it was in the NES days, or is seen today with the same level of excitement and mass appeal as a Mario, Mario Kart, or even Wii Sports, is disingenuous. I'd feel comfortable saying Skyward Sword only mattered to people who have still been playing the series past Ocarina of Time. I'd feel comfortable saying that remaking Majora's Mask on 3ds will do worse than OoT 3ds did, because that's how it shook out on N64. It's not a bad thing - it just is what it is.
Zelda games don't sell nearly as well as Nintendo's other big IPs.
On the 3DS, for instance:
Pokémon X and Y -- 13.29 million
Mario Kart 7 -- 9.62 million
Super Mario 3D Land -- 9.27 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- 7.82 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- 7.66 million
Monster Hunter 4 -- 4.10 million
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- 3.98 million
Nintendogs + Cats -- 3.50 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- 3.35 million
Super Smash Bros. -- 3.22 million
Tomodachi Life -- 3.12 million
Yo-Kai Watch 2 -- 2.84 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds -- 2.51 million
I mean, a fucking LUIGI game outsold OOT.
Millions sold ain't chicken feed.
And OoT 3ds has been out longer than Luigi's Mansion. 3 million copies is a decent deal but yeah - it didn't really hit the same popularity as Mario or Pokemon have on the handheld. Or, in general really.
edit: If I wanted to be a dick, I could point out that 3 million people playing a game in world where billions of people live kinda is chicken feed, but that means 13 mil is too.
Let's face it - even if games are more a part of pop culture than ever before, it's still not that important to the public at large across the world.
