Yeller, try out New Adventure Island! It's the best game. There are like a million games on the PC Engine but since I didn't grow up around it the names are all meaningless and you definitely end up playing a lot of shit before finding the good stuff (which there is tons of!)
Fighting Street and It Came from the Desert are the only games he'll need.
Seriously though, get Dracula X and the dozens of brilliant shooters and you'll be set for weeks.
New Adventure Island is on my list! Dracula X I played through on a hacked XBox a million years ago, so now I'm catching up with staple PCE CD stuff like the Valis series.
I remember being REALLY IMPRESSED with the screenshots in EGM a million years ago, it's nice actually playing 'em even though they're kind of mediocre. The 80s anime aesthetic is STRONGK though, so I'm enjoying it. (I dearly wish the bosses would have some kind of death animation though, so unsatisfying!)
Play Splash Lake. It's an awesome game that nobody outside of the hardcore ever touch.
New Adventure Island might be the best non-shooter, non-Dracula game on the system.

The last Valis game made was the PCE remake of the original and it's probably the best. Valis II is garbage but III and IV are better.
The dub for Valis II makes it worth playing.
Dungeon Explorer I and especially part II are a lot of fun!
My play-order is going to be Valis II, SD Valis, III, IV, then the 1 remake I think.
