The later games (especially 3) are decent assuming you can find a walkthrough. 2 is interesting just to see where Working Designs found its voice, for better or worse.
SD Valis is just a "remake" of II, and was only on the Genesis AFAIK.
Fun fact: Valis IV was the first game I ever imported.
aka Syd of Valis because the US producers couldn't make sense of "SD" yet. The Genesis Valis 1 remake looks really nice actually, good parallax in the backgrounds.

SNES Valis IV looks super generic, by contrast! Not the best system for ports really, looking back.
Final Fantasy VII is starting to get weird with the minigames and I'm getting to appreciate it a bit, just got Yuffie. I wonder how much of that game was decided from the early SNES-CD development and didn't really change form that much, it really plays like the 16 bit games.
I also played Ninja Gaiden TG16 last night, it was weird. Like somebody describing NG to you but getting it just slightly wrong. The layers were neat though.
The whole thing is a good argument in favor of the NES limitation-imposed stylization, I think.

It is more fun to play than PCE Valis II, though, and keeps the armor and weapon switching from the original Japanese computer game.
Double Dragon II is another NES to PCE port, as well as River City Ransom with fucking voice acting. Yes.

Since the pics still work, I'll link to my old thread. Maybe it could be useful for people wanting a quick look at what's good and non-Japanese speaker-friendly. I imagine sifting through lists of foreign named games can be overwhelming. It seems I forgot Buster Bros. had a domestic release back then.

In more recent years, I have become a much bigger fan of the Ys series. I also like the port of Shinobi much more despite the missing content. And Out Run holds up better than the Genesis port. The Space Invaders remake is also pretty underrated.
