I guess.
But the world outside the city puts a lot of shit into question. Like, I have hard time believing that yufi's village was ever a great threat to shinra or midgar. Or that any group was. And yet they have a port with a Paris gun.

I wonder how much of that just comes down to resources and plotting. Like they couldn't build two Midgars and set them up as rivals.
It is probably something like that.
They extended their reach as far as was possible when it was released. What was there was still bigger than 90% of jrpgs.
Silent Debuggers is absolutely one of my favorite Turbo games. It might not be the best game-game, but it was such a fascinating and engrossing experience for the time. It was a "survival horror" game of sorts before those really existed, and just had this awesome atmosphere to it.
On the Valis topic, I think it was the Valis I remake on Turbo that was my favorite. I didn't totally understand the Valis series at the time, so I always found it weird that an older game would play better than later games.
Thinking about it now, though, I'm not sure if I've ever played IV. I'd have to look it up.
From what little I've played 4 and the remake of 1 are the only two that are legit good these days. I picked them up a little while back, I need to give them a play.
I picked up Sword Art Online for the Vita when it was on sale a while back and just started playing it a few weeks ago.
This is the EPITOME of the good bad game.
The game info dumps you in the beginning, the tutorial isn't helpful at all, the localization is not great (but not NEARLY as bad as some internet whiners have proclaimed. I'd put it on par with Neo Geo games), and it can get tedious if you try to unlock everything at once.
But the battle system is incredibly engaging once you "get it."
Nothing is more satisfying than tackling a boss 40 levels higher than you, and decimating it before it barely gets a hit or two on you.
But until you know what skills to chain and things like that, things at your own level can be dangerous.
I'm playing with my bean while seeing SSJN's name appear in New Posts.
And Persona Q. Not only do I finally get how to play it after twenty hours; I think I get how I was supposed to have been playing the entire series. Laboring over fusions and erasures was the wrong way.
I really want to start playing Q, but need to finish SAO first...which won't be happening anytime soon. The game is huge.
Goddamnit now I really want to play SAO.
Do it.
I can't see your MonHun loving ass not liking it. Not to mention the little girls...
On that topic, one second the dialog is incredibly charming, the next it's incredibly icky.
The first post in the neogaf thread is incredibly helpful. But I wouldn't go any further than that. God damn, I don't see how that place can exist. Reading some threads sure made me re-appreciate TNL though, even with the boring gimmicks some of us can't seem to let go of.
Silent Debuggers was a interesting game. The corridors inspired the same awe as Phantasy Star for me but a few levels in tedium hit.
Hard Reset: Extended Edition- Great FPS that goes outside the mold. Want a little less cut-scene and a lot more blasting? This is it. HR's cyberpunk story is a nice break from the B&B military themes, and the upgrade system is nice (you have 10 possible weapons wth 5 running on ammo, and the other 5 on energy, instead of requiring specialized rounds). Plenty of destructible objects give chances for environmental kills. Some weapons even have an altfire that stuns, but needs a while before it can be used again. The mortar's AF can be used to "deadlock" enemies ala Singularity. Even the shotgun has stun shells. Regen health? Forget it, but the armor will fix itself when you quit taking damage for a bit.
The whole world is on its last legs, like if METEOR or whatever wasn't going to end it all, it would've eventually rattled to pieces anyway. Even Midgar was a huge dump. Wutai wasn't a threat to Shinra, and that's the point. The whole nation of Definitely Not Japan has been stripped of its powers and brought down to nothing by Not the US, and now it's just kind of waiting to die like the rest of the world.
i know that was a bad idea and i'm not going to get into an argument about it, but the game is a lot better than *i* remember it being nearly 18 years ago. it's as believable as any game where half a dozen or so people successfully go up against an empire and can take the time to breed hundreds of generations of giant birds to race and ride across the ocean, all while the world is going to end pretty soon
I'm still enjoying it! Past Golden Saucer (thank god), found the cat dude, movin' right along.
Cait Sith is a lot dumber than i remember him being...
he was the COOLEST character when i was 16.
Every character in the game seems built for 'will a teenager draw this on lined paper a million times'.
Yes. And Nomura was the first of all them! His art is so shitty in FFVII! I still don't like it, but man were the official art character designs terrible.
Also i just remembered that in the dig site of FFVII you clearly see a jet fighter and the remains of a dragon, proving Final Fantasy VII takes place after Drakengard Ending E and probably before Nier.
It also has that weird, underwater armor from Eva! Can it take place in both worlds?!?
Get in the fucking Omega Weapon, Shinji.
Playing Ultimate NES Remix on 3DS. It does a good job at breathing new life into early NES stuff. I still hate how slow NES Donkey Kong is, though. I mostly played the speedy VIC 20 version back in the day.
The Talos Principle.
You guys are going to love this when you decide to stop waiting for 3 dollar Steam sales. Or when it hits 3 dollars on Steam, whatever.
I was planning on snagging that.
I finished the all the existing episodes of Saturday Morning RPG, which is fun but left me feeling unfulfilled since the final episode has yet to be completed. Apparently the sales sucked and the guys making it ate working on a final episode between other projects that actually pay the bills.
Episodic gaming, bleh.
I'm really irritated about Mind Control Tech being all over the meta right now in Hearthstone because it ruins my favorite class: Shaman.
Law & Order Legacies (PC) - It's amazing how much better Telltale got with their more recent stuff than their earlier stuff. If I weren't a complete police procedural wonk, this wouldn't have lasted long. It's too nit picky, and the actors don't sound anything like the ones from the show. At least it was only and finally $5. Maybe I would have been better off it stayed more forever...
Shin Megami Tensei (iOS) - With Demon's Souls complete, I picked this back up in earnest. I am determined to finally finish a game in this series, and this seems like the right place to start. I'm still very early. I just got to Shinjuku. For better or worse, it seems at least loosely following a FAQ is a good idea if not necessary.
I started playing Ocarina of Time. Navi actually feels refreshingly hands-off after Fi.
Is it worth $40? I seriously thought it was $15 or $20. I don't mind spending $40 on a good game though.
I can't guarantee anything obviously, but I think it's really, really good. I hate to compare it to Portal because it's kind of a lazy comparison, but the puzzles are mostly interesting and I really enjoy the atmosphere and the music. I am having fun like I had fun in that game.
Has anyone that bought this game at 40 disliked it? 98% positive Steam reviews for a 40 dollar game that's only dipped to 36 (but there was a Public Test, so I don't know how that factors in) seems about as good as it gets.
Haven't had a whole lot of time to play stuff but it was Tales of Xillia when I was sick last week, and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire here and there.
Also, challenge mod on GGXrd though I can't seem to string any air combo together ._.
I've been turning my nose up at Dynasty Warriors since 2000. Tonight I'm not only mowing though the Zelda one, but buying DLC for it.
My love for this game is inversely proportional to my love for myself.
I'm playing through Hexcells. The first one is merely a tutorial for the other games.
Also, I am trying to play REMake 2015. Who thought this game was any good? I have picked up a grand total of a gem, a pistol, 8 shotgun shells, ink and some stupid crest and now I can't heal myself since apparently you can't drop anything unless you find some storage locker
"Don't play RE5, play this" pft wat
Inventory management is part of the game. Get better.
So I can't drop a item 2 feet from me, use a health item and pick something back up?
Sounds really stupid. That must be part of the "scares" too like the clumsy controls people defended for decades.
I can't use my hands in soccer? This game is retarded.
I'm surprised Joust hasn't played old school RE before.
Well, I'll have to check the manual, but yes, I think a 6 item limit if you're going with a system like that is pretty stupid. Mario 3 had a bigger inventory than that. Plus, an instantly disposable item should let you auto-use it if your inventory is full.
I didn't play it that far. I played it past that realization, but I don't remember it.
Fantasy Life 3DS- about the only 3DS game of 2014 I cared to play. If any title can get by on "charm" this would be it. There are plenty of similar titles that come together better than this yet it's addicting.
Gyrodine Famicom- not a fan of early shooters and this follows a number of annoying quirks like endless levels, bland sound, and uneven enemy distribution. The weapon system is a delight though. Moving left and right can veer shots offering pinpoint potential, your ground attack is better than anyone, and A+B is a limited homing shot that takes out ground and air targets alike. Feels like the Famicom fossil ancestor of Under Defeat.
I've turned my Android phone into an actual decent game machine using a Bluetooth gamepad or a PS3 controller. It's mostly for emulators, but I've been playing a few actual Android games.
Sonic 4 Episode I: This works much better for me as a portable game, I'm enjoying it much more than I did when it first released on the PS3.
Double Dragon Trilogy: I voiced some criticism of this on another thread based on the Ouya version, but the emulation issues aren't noticeable on the small screen. I've beaten DD1 on arcade difficulty with two credits, but I haven't managed to beat DD2's final boss even on easy.
Shadowgun: Playing on Hard, the PS3 controller almost makes it to easy.
TMNT Arcade: First time I've had something portable that could run this perfectly. I'm so fucking hard.
All you need is a knife and a bad attitude.
It's not uncommon for game apologists to claim a broken mechanic is really a strength, or even "the point". This is one of those rare exceptions where a frustrating system really is an essential part of the experience. Much of the tension in the early RE titles comes from dwindling supplies, being severely limited as to what you can carry and how you actually juggle your inventory. Do you bring extra ammo and maybe some healing items, or pack an extra weapon?
Always make sure you combine herbs ASAP to conserve space (and only carry what you need), make sure your weapons are fully loaded at all times, and only pick up puzzle-related stuff when you're ready to use it.

In the original RE, Jill is kind of the new player/easy mode. Play her first and the systems will be less annoying.
become the master of unlocking
Wasn't one of the unlocks a hardcore mode where the inventory boxes aren't linked? You think only having 6 items is a limit? Holy shit.
Yeah, Real Survivor mode, that is the reason I probably won't try platinuming the game because holy hell that mode is obnoxious.
You can put stuff in one chest and retrieve it from another.
oh
hell, I am amazed you can even do that normally
because you can't put a gem on the god damn ground so you can eat a plant for two seconds
Exactly
Danganronpa (Vita) - Just finished the first trial. Good fun and slick presentation so far. I waited for a physical copy to drop under $30 as even praised J-adventures can be hit or miss for me. And I never got the English PSP version demo to work.
Plowing through some new crap and some pile of shame stuff.
Castlevania: LOS - Figured I should do a quick run through since I'm working off the rest of the series and only played like an hour of the PC version. The first half of this game is just fucking horrible and everyone who planned it should find new careers. The second half isn't too bad thanks to the nice castle, better pacing, and more frequent bosses that aren't boring-as-fuck titans. Coming back to it years later hasn't changed my mind on it, still an average God of War clone with some nice backgrounds.
Castlevania: Mirror of Fate - What the shit was that? Never did I think I would utter the phrase, "I would rather be playing Castlevania: The Adventure right now," but here we are. Somehow the cutscenes were all designed to look ten times worse than the regular graphics, which I don't even understand. The movement is floaty as hell, enemies still take way too long to die, the soldier notes are hilariously half-assed and read like an intern cranked them all out at the last second, the bosses are okay, fuck this game. I should've burned that five dollars and saved myself the hours of playtime.
Castlevania: LOS2 - Somehow both better and worse than I expected. The combat is much improved, enemies don't feel like immortal punching bags, the light/dark mechanic is vastly better integrated with unique weapons and doesn't feel slapped on like in the first game, the bosses are crazy over-the-top God of War spectacle pieces instead of just being boring, and the castle is pretty cool. But the modern world stuff is just so bland and amateurish, and there are so many better things they could've done there to overlap the two that I struggle to understand why they did what they did.
The stealth stuff is mercifully short but really doesn't need to be in there after the beginning, I think I'm like halfway through and Drac should be plenty strong enough to kill those big soldiers by this point. Really forcing a lot of these mechanics, but at least when it comes to punching stuff it's enjoyable.
Besiege - Wacky Physics Simulator 2015 had me cracking up. This is so much more entertaining than it has any right to be, and is the number one reason I'm sad I'm leaving for work soon. I want to stay up all night and make stupid things to kill people with.
Forward to the Sky - This game is fucking terrible, but damn if it isn't adorable. Riding 100% on cuteness factor.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade - Using poop breaks to finally try and finish at least one playthrough. God it looks so good, but it's wasted on such a poorly designed game. I should probably just delete it and read shampoo bottles during my bathroom breaks instead but I guess I'm being stubborn here.
I bought Muramasa and regretted it about .08 seconds later.
Panzer Dragoon Orta, because I missed it.
Nah, you didn't.
That Mirror game really was a sort of pile.
I usually do :(
Pineapple: I tried to build a catapult and instead designed a machine that could only light itself on fire. There's not much there since it's Steam early access, but I'm pretty entertained with it and it's only $7. It's supposed to be about building old war machines and destroying towns.
Nayuta no Kiseki (PSP)
I've patched it with the English translation (v4.02) from Flame & SkyeWelse.
This one goes back to a single-character system, and you get the double jump early in the game. Like Ys 6/Felghana/Origin there's a good bit of platforming and a hit chain system- instead of a damage multiplier, this gives various rewards. So far I've finished the first couple quests and gone into the first ruins. Good as expected from Falcom.
Though I've bought it on UMD, XSEED has my money if they work with these guys to get an official translation onto PSN.
Edit: I did try to buy something at one of the shops. No deal- the game crashed. Patch 4.04 fixes that issue.
P3P
Forcing myself to put it down so I can sleep tonight. It's just as stylish as P4G (my first taste of Persona). And just as heavy on the cringe-inducing honorifics, too! I kinda miss the small-town vibe of 4, and this one feels way darker, but I'm digging it.
So yeah, I guess I'm playing this series in reverse order. That would have driven a younger Andrew batshit nuts.
Borderlands Pre-Sequel - more of the same
COD: Advanced Warfare - this game has some bad ass stuff in it, I am playing the SP
While some y'all are playing in a fantasy zone, I've playing with TitS.
I'm only a couple hours in so far. I love the writing. Kudos to whoever did the translation.
It was so, so good. We should be seeing more TitS soon.
So I'd heard, which motivated me to finally play through this. My son beat it three years ago, and I've got this thing where I hate playing games he already played. But it looks totes cute and the three amigos were talking (sometimes yelling) about the series on that one podcast. So yeah, SAO backburnered, and I'm doing this and mostly enjoying it. (If I already talked to the miner once, why did I have to go back to him to get a key? Why couldn't he have just given it to me the first time?)
Actually, I started playing it because I had to get new tires for my van and knew I'd be sitting in the waiting room for a bit. I'd left my Vita at work so got out my PSP GO and said, what can I play for a lil while? This was already on it (I started it forever ago, but wasn't in the mood for the talkiness of the beginning so only played about 20 minutes) and the rest will be history.
Beat GTA5 then immediately went back and played it again to exploit the assassination missions. Now I own all the properties, vehicles, and guns but I feel so empty.
Monster Hunter 3U Wii U. I'm liking it quite a bit, though the camera can be irritating at times. I can't wait to play Monster Hunter 4U. I enjoyed the demo.
Going through Samurai Shodown Anthology on PS2 one game at a time, just finished 1. Best way to dig in to a fighting game series, starting at the first.
Amakusa's still ridiculous, and the same tricks to beat him still work.
THEN DIE YOU CRAZY FUNSTER.
SamSho 2 is more beautiful than I remember, the shift between 1 and 2 is kind of amazing.
SS2 is one of my favorites, I honestly don't think any of the sequels compare.
I remember 3 dropping the ball and 4 trying too hard to fix 3 instead of moving forward, never played 5 or 6.
Gunstar Heroes This game is awesome but how am I supposed to beat Seven Force? In serious need of a Pro Tip right now. I cleared the dice maze and 2 other stages but can't make a dent on Seven Force. I've only reached the 3rd of 7 bosses and have died about 50 or 60 times so far. Fucking brutal. Help!
SamSho 3 is interesting. I used to hate it, think it was too lacking in features and characters compared to SS2, just played so weird, and was desperately in need of better balancing. Looking back at it now, though, I appreciate it more. Yeah, SS4 is probably the better game overall, but it feels weirdly by-the-numbers compared to SS3, and something happened to the sprites between the two games to make them look noticeably worse.
SamSho 2 is still far and away my top choice, and after that, the second-best SamSho game is... well, Last Blade 2. Then probably Last Blade. *heh* But SS3 is still fun to break out and play at times, and appreciate the chances that were taken with the game.
I'm not sure if the sprites changed between 3 and 4, but many of the backgrounds are a lot lighter in 4 which makes for worse contrast.
I recently played a game called IDARBs on Xbone that was faaaantastic.
It's the most fun I've had playing a videogame in a long long time.
Is that by the Tiny Tower people? Same looking characters. I think I saw some version of this at Day of the Devs last year, whole thing looks like burnt ass.
Castle Wolfenstein: A New Order (PC) - I was playing this on my Core2Quad rig in the living room, up until I got to a level that just brought the Q9650 to its knees. I've restarted playing the game on my i5-2500k rig in my office. This game is one if the best single player FPS games I've played in a long time. It's awesome!
Vanquish (PS3) - I started playing the game this week. It's a pretty amazing looking game, considering the hardware that it's on.
Crysis 2 (PC) - I recently finished playing the game on my PC in the living room. I decided to start over on my main gaming rig in my office. The game still looks pretty good, considering that it didn't take full advantage of the PC hardware of the time.
I'm not reading the words "Fantasy Zone" nearly enough times here.
I was never a big fan of Fantasy Zone. It was a pretty average shooter to me.
I find TNL's spooging over a 3D port of a 29 year old game a bit odd, too. It's a classic for sure and the port adds some neat stuff, but I've played it to death across several systems and there's more interesting shit going on this month.
The tears of Opa Opa...
TG16 port 4 lyfe
I have been playing mostly MH3U, but I have been playing a bit of FZ 3DS. I also have the FC version, which I like quite a bit.
I liked even the shitty-ass Tengen version as a kid a lot more than I was willing to admit (too cute!) and then years later it was probably my most played hu-card. It's nice to have this new, maybe best version of one of my favorites that still holds up visually in every way.
I like it even more as I get older and have less taste for military and war themed shit, and it's as hardcore as they come.
It's between the Majora remake and monhun 4 this month for sure. The 3DS is kicking ass.
Is Hyrule Warriors the best "play and listen to podcasts" game? Because I think it might be.
Also nice rack Cia.
I always thought Fantasy Zone looked kind of boring to actually play, and then I think I tried it once and didn't care for it. Maybe I'll give it another shot in a few months after MonHun and such.
But that would make me hate it outright.
Also: You're not shitting on a game for once. Did your account get hacked?
No.
yes
