Daredevil (Netflix Series)

Not going to spoil anything since this just came out so I'll be very general here, Daredevil's been one of my most anticipated original Netflix shows and it really delivers.

Having binged watched the entire season over the past two days it's a far better realization of Daredevil from the 80's/00'scomics than the Mark Steven Johnson film which had too much stuff to juggle and crammed into one movie. As a series this lets all the characters breathe and grow while simultaneously having Marvel's high grade cinematography and budget. Marvel did a great job with bringing in actors first and then giving them the comic looks rather than the other way around which pays off with great performances by Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Scott Glenn, Rosiaro Dawson and pretty much the entirety of the cast. The only actor I wasn't particularly taken with was Eldon Henson's Foggy who was a little annoying and a bit off in some places but was otherwise decent.

The action sequence throughout the series are plentiful and well integrated into the story with the highlights being in episode 2 and 9. The last episode's main fight lies somewhere in the middle although a bit rushed for my tastes but maybe it holds up better with a repeat viewing. My only other issues with the series were the fact that we didn't see the red Daredevil costume until the very end and the inconsistent pacing of the latter episodes which gives the series a little too tidy of an ending. Still there's enough hanging sub-plots, mentions, easter eggs, and lore to explore from the first season to carry well into a second and third (if all goes well) so I cannot wait to see them introduce more staple Daredevil characters and villains.

Overall I'd give the series a 9/10, Daredevil sets a high bar for future Marvel Netflix series to come and arguably even the films.

Hmm, I don't know if I'd say better but it's certainly in that same vein.

What I really enjoy about DD is that he's basically Marvel's Batman without the riches so it's more interesting to see how he works without having Bruce Wayne's resources since he has to struggle much harder for his victories. Granted, he has ninja magic training, a limited (yet versatile) weapon set, and crazy superhuman senses to make up for it but he's very much set in the Marvel "feet of clay" mold.

I've watched through episode 11. I love how this is a war with wins and losses for both sides, and Kingpin getting his own "hero's journey" separate from his fight with Daredevil. If I didn't have a deadline I'd be watching the last two right now, but it's a bit too late tonight. Still tempted!

I've watched up to episode 4. I will definitely give you the fights being better. Being able to see the moves, and the fighting is fantastic. I think the first two Bat movies have it on story though, and pacing for me. I think they could have easily cut 15 - 20 minutes from each of the 4 episodes I saw, and they would have been better for it.

I watched it all on Sunday morning/afternoon. I enjoyed it but thought it was pretty average. The fights are fun but nothing clever or super interesting (the fight scene in episode 2 being a notable exception). Enjoyed the lack of cutting in the fights.

The stuff with Kingpin was superb except for them not seeing that Owlsly was clearly behind it the whole time. I wish they had made Kingpins political maneuverings smarter. Maybe it's because I watched house of cards recently but Kingpin schemes felt kind of dumb.

I found Foggy Nelson extremely annoying and downright idiotic at times. Killing off Ben Urich also seemed silly.

I had expected Karen to get dealt with, since she doesn't make it in the comics. Ben dying is also dumb, but I guess paves the way for Phil Urich to work at the Bugle now that Sony and Marvel are playing nice. Fisk made mistakes because of Vanessa. I'm assuming Madame Gow went to K'unlun and we'll be seeing her in the Iron Fist show.

Only saw one episode, and it seems promising. For some reason, lawyer Murdock reminds me a bit of Will Forte.

Finished it. Very impressed. Happy about how things ended too. Not sold on the costume though.

I wish the costume was better, but I'll take a slightly bootleg suit over the action being bad.

Costume was alright. Kinda funny that Not-Harold made it for Not-Batman.

I think it's the squished nose that's giving me the most trouble with it.

I wasn't planning on watching this, and then I read that Netflix has added audio descriptions for the blind. Let's go.

So I never really read many comics that had Kingpin in them. The runs of Spider-Man I read never really dealt with him, and I've never read Daredevil. So I had a question for those who have, is he this fucking awkward, weird and like he has a social anxiety issue in the comics? I was always under the impression that he was your typical overly confident, I'm the man kind of gangster.

From what I remember he was never THIS awkward. Maybe irritated when he didn't get his way, but not crippling.

This is more of his origin story, yes he starts off that way but by the end he's Kingpin.

Ya his character even changes how he walks towards the end, he becomes Kingpin. All he needs is a white suit

That's exactly how I felt, especially that neverending confessional, Jesus Christ. After that the series grabs you by the balls and doesn't let go.

I said pretty much the same in the other thread. I was reading to switch it off by the time the opening credits began.

I really like this, they're doing right by those comics.

There's plenty of shaky cam in the dialog scenes though...

I've watched this up to like episode 11, so I'm enjoying it more than I expected to, but it does have some real flaws.

Vincent D'Onofrio stinks in this role. Everything surrounding Kingpin feels very forced. His chemistry-free, inexplicable romance feels like it exists solely to give him something to lose. Even the way he delivers his lines with slow, deliberate sadness feels phony all the time. They wanted to create a conflicted character, but in the end there isn't much character there at all.

The action is well filmed, but it's too flashy for the gritty tone of the show. I'd have liked quick, brutal, efficient fights more than a drawn out ballet of spin kicks and backflips off the wall. Maybe more of a personal preference.

Why do they never say "New York?" They only ever refer to "Hell's Kitchen" as if it's the name of the city, and they also act like it's a bad neighborhood, which it hasn't been in like 60 years. I get that being from "Hell's Kitchen" is a part of his mythos, but I don't think anyone would find it a betrayal of that if he worked outside of a 7 block radius.

Daredevil wrestles at length with how he doesn't want to kill anyone, and yet when he finally does kill someone (Nobu) he seems to forget it even happened the second afterwards. He even talks to the priest about how he didn't kill Fisk, but doesn't seem even slightly bothered that he killed someone else.

Killing in a fight being different from murdering someone outright, I suppose.

I liked D'Onofrio in this! I don't think he did a bad job at all.

Yeah the big diffidence to me was that he was thinking about straight up assassinating Fisk while he was fighting for his life when he killed Nobu.

The producers said from the beginning that they wanted to make this series a very street level series, focused very heavily on Hells Kitchen. That's why they don't have him wandering around Queens or Manhatten or Hoboken or where ever.

Just watched episode 4, kingpin reacted very poorly over the stupid date. It almost jumped the shark.

Hell's Kitchen is in Manhattan. They call it Clinton now and it's a nice area on the west side of midtown. It's where Comic Con is and shit. It's just oddly specific to only reference such a small area.

I could understand your confusion though considering Manhattan's skyline is always shown across the river in the background. I guess there's a large mirror in the Hudson.

So yeah, started watching this the other night and ended up staying up until 7 watching the first six episodes. The show is really fucking good and I never read any daredevil or watched the affleck movie. The choreography is good and yeah, the scenes really breathe without tons of shitty cuts and editing. The pace is great. D'onofrio is great. The fights are great. Some of the comic book schlock gets a little too thick for me at points but that's just comic book stuff, you can't blame the show for any of it.

This has got to be one of the best if not the best comic book adaptations to date. I don't know how exactly to put it, but it feels right. It feels like the way reading a comic feels. I agree exactly with mzo, it's a better batman than the 3 dc batmans for sure.

I think d'onofrio is great but I never read anything with kingpin so I don't have any frame of reference to compare his performance to. He needed the scene in ep 4 for his character development.

I hope one day Netflix does Wizard and Glass.

Also there are references to other places in New York both visually and in dialogue.

It's just weird to me that they avoid ever saying the words "New York" for an entire season. It's awkward like watching someone try to walk down the sidewalk without stepping on the cracks. I don't know why they do it. It makes it feel like they didn't get the IP rights to New York or something. No one talks like that in real life.

My point is not so much that they got Hell's Kitchen wrong. It's a comic book, who cares? It's just all the awkward and interchangeable references to either "This City" or "Hell's Kitchen" and never ever once "New York".

You ever read a comic book? Superheroes are always going on about THIS CITY.

This was a lot of fun to watch. Any complaints are really nit-picky, looking forward to season 2.

Really enjoyed the season. Only complaint is the costume. It's terrible.

My biggest problem with the costume was that the mask part looked like it was squeezing his head. Like it was about to launch off of the top of his dome like a model rocket.

The Ninja Dread Pirate Roberts getup really grows on you, too.

I think hell's kitchen was supposed to have been destroyed by the big avengers fight, so now it's a shithole, or something? Doesn't explain the hispanic family's that have been living there for ages I guess.

I didn't get that idea. I just figured it was "Marvel Comics' Hell's Kitchen" as a location and the mob was making money on rebuilding after the Avengers fight.

I wish Daredevil was actually fighting for the younger gay men who were priced out of Chelsea.

When they move the show to SF it can be Daredevil vs Brogrammers in the Castro.

Love the series. finnaly finishing it. got a nice easter egg that i wonder if they will expand on. Steel Serpent is one of the enemies of the Iron Fist. Are they going to do any crossovers before the Defenders series?

Shane from the Walking Dead has been cast as the Punisher.

I think he is a really good choice for that role.

Perfect choice. But I kind of want to see Punisher in a Captain America movie too. He's always at odds with Shield.

There seems to be an aversion to mixing the Daredevil Universe with the Avengers cinematic one but this should be one exception.

iron Fist is still in pre-production. So, the answer is ... unsure. The definitive answer is DD and IF will team up in Defenders and possibly before hand. They want the NYC street heroes to interact with each other in each others shows.

Punisher's a Jackson Pollock kinda dude.

He had to hand paint it so it matched his weathered trench coat. Image is everything in the vigilante game.

Dolph's Punisher movie had no skulls whatsoever. The actors all had soft floppy heads, what an odd film.

The Ray Stevenson Punisher didn't have that runny paint look, it was more faint looking. Bernthal's Punisher skull pulls it off a lot better though.

Finished it. I'm really mixed on it the huge dangling threads at the end did a lot of damage to my enjoyment in the end, spoilers away:


I'm still annoyed that they spent so much time on those kids that were being bled and the canister to not pay any of it off. All we get in the end is Elektra being put in the canister? Ugh.

And what the fuck was the point of the giant hole in the ground The Hand was digging? They didn't do shit to explain pretty much anything The Hand was doing in Hells Kitchen. I don't mind a slight tease of what is to come but to just leave pretty much fucking everything dangling is complete shit. They didn't explain a damned thing about what the fuck Black Sky really is either.

And the payoff to the Punisher's arc was complete crap. The Blacksmith being his general who showed up in one fucking episode before hand? Come the fuck on. And I love how Daredevil just kind of stopped caring about The Blacksmith for no reason.

Bullseye not being the one to kill Elektra? Fuck you.

It really seemed like everything was going to tie together cohesively into one arc of DD, Punisher and Elektra having to come together to stop The Blacksmith who would have been part of The Hand but nope, they just had Punisher wander off to do his own thing to then pop up right at the end in a shitty little saving DD cameo.

All in all, there was some really good stuff but it just fell the fuck apart at the end which killed my liking the season as a whole. The first half to 2/3 or so is amazing though.

I found that part at the end with Punisher super ridiculous too. So he missed the part where Elektra was being murdered but decided to save Daredevil from a few ninjas he could have dispatched on his own anyway? Why have The Stick kill Nobu in the end. Robs us of a big DD/Nobu final battle.

I didn't enjoy season 1 as much as other people seemed to. Season 2 started off pretty terrific, right up until The Hand was introduced. I know this is probably just the way the comic books are but ninja death squads conveniently swooping around NYC seems a bit silly –*and they were written in a very convenient way. Whenever someone needed to escape - ninjas. Whenever DD got close to a clue - ninjas. Whenever Elektra and DD needed to break up and be apart from one another - ninjas. Need an excuse for Night Nurse to go solo – ninjas. After awhile every scene was just waiting around for the surprise ninja attack. It was ridiculous to the point where there appeared to be a hundred ninjas on the roof at the end. Felt like the old 90's ninja turtles. Very cheesy.

The trial and Punisher arc was great. They should have just kept that up to its logical conclusion. His old commander being The Blacksmith was WAY too convenient. I also did not like the actress they cast as Elektra.

As a side note... I'm not sure if it's the actor or the character but I fucking HATE Foggy Nelson. That being said until the ninjas showed up the fight scenes were pretty terrific. They held a lot of weight. The part with Kingpin were typically pretty great too. Jessica Jones is much better than DD at this point.

Oh yeah, also on the last ep:

Elektra: how many are out there?
DD: Too many to count.

Opens door and runs out to find 15 ninja standing there with bows.

There were these weird clips that showed like a squad of 20 by themselves, then another and another. I also didn't like how the fights seemed highly inconsistent in their conclusion. Like Nobu kicked DD's ass the first time, and their second meeting DD swatted Nobu away like he was nothing garbage. Then in the final battle both Elektra and DD together couldn't take him.

They did a lot of 1-take fight scenes this season which was probably the highlight. The stairwell scene in episode 3 and the prison fight scene with Punisher were exceptional. Karen Page was pretty awesome this season except for her being literally a victim in every episode. They should toughen her up next season.

I think she'd do well with a heroin addiction.
