Some direction yes, but think of Dark Souls 1 from the start you have two paths and after completing those you go on a short linear path through Anor Londo then you have a four way split that can be done in any order. That's what I mean by non linear.
With this game at best some times the route splits in two for a level or so but that's it. There's no picking your order, you're going to play it the same path every time.
Look at the progress route maps to see what I mean (obviously has some level spoilers in the link for DS3 so don't follow it if you're trying to avoid those):
