With Miyazaki at the helm.

Please let it be true.
These are starting to get awfully close together. At least it seems that way.
I skipped 2 (although I bought it on PC recently and dabbled a little), so this is perfect timing personally. As much as I loved Bloodborne, it really made me want to go back and play Dark Souls again. Which I did.
The idea of a real Souls game with a Bloodborne+ level of polish would be incredible.
It seems way too soon so I have my doubts.
Wouldn't mind a newer port of the first Dark Souls though.
Yeah, I'm not burned out yet, but I don't think I want to see these become annual either.
Dark Ops 3: Modern Soulfare
Even if this gets announced at E3, we won't see it for at least a year. I wouldn't be surprised if this has a two-year cycle.
I'm not sick of these games yet, not by a long shot, and I don't at all mind the thought of Miyazaki continuing to refine them. Bloodborne was better than Dark Souls in a lot of ways, and Dark Souls was better than Demon's Souls practically across the board for me.
By the time this comes out it will be longer than two years since DS2 was released.
Bloodborn is just Dark Souls by another name.
No different than Black Ops and Modern Warfare alternating years. Yeah they're different series, but not really. If 2016 has a Dark Souls in say March or April then it's a yearly release for three years running. Then Bloodborn 2 will come out in 2017, mark my words.
I doubt this is coming in 2016.
But if it is I'd be happy because at this point I trust Miyazaki to deliver.
Every Miyazaki is good at what they do.
I am not even close to done with Dark Souls 2 SOTFS yet.
I mean of course they are, but they also totally are the same game with a different coat of paint.
I see them as more like brothers or cousins. You can surely tell that they are related but they are definitely different. There is more different than just a coat of paint.
As wonderful as Bloodborne is, this news excites me more than DLC for that game. Dark Souls is the best game, and 2 (despite being polarizing) is also top notch and a joy to play, so as long as Miyazaki feels it's done, I'll happily take a third installment as soon as he gives it his stamp of approval.
I love the hell out of these games, but I'm not too keen on them cranking one out every year. It would just dilute the mystique for me. And personally I'd prefer they focus on Bloodborne at this point, its pretty close to flawless in my eyes. I'm so burnt out on the dragons/fantasy settings, I think the Lovecraft/Victorian setting is a huge improvement.
That is exactly where I am on this as well. The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls are more than enough fantasy for me, but the quality of these games can overcome that. I just wish it didn't have to.
They really are two very different beasts, though. Bloodborne is so... slick and stylish, and the changes to combat make it a little more accessible to new players while still retaining the tough as nails feel of the entire series, and it's better for it. I agree that things like The Witcher and Elder Scrolls (another two of my favorite franchises ever) are enough to hold me over for as long as needs be, but theres something about the deliberate and methodical pace of a game like Dark Souls that puts it almost in a different category. Witcher and ES are wonderfully fleshed out worlds with TONS of interesting characters, dialogue, quests and things of that nature that you want in a fantasy game. Dark Souls hits some of those same notes, but makes you work to find the stories, gives you little snippets of the characters and almost forces you to have your own take on the narrative, which to me is sometimes even more exciting and rewarding. It's apples and oranges, but I'd say we're all better off having such incredible options to choose from.
All that said, I wouldn't want to see it become a yearly franchise only because I like to keep playing the games over and over and I would feel rushed knowing the next chapter was just around the corner. I'll still happily take them whenever they come out, so long as the quality stays intact and the worlds stay interesting (not a hard thing for From to accomplish given the history so far).
Pc version needs to be a thing that is out first
Uh huh.
Best noob/spammer ever.
You know, as crazy as it would be, I'd love to have something akin to a Dark Souls x Shin Megami Tensei crossover. Not like an actual, direct one, but a game where the setting is a decaying, demon-infested modern era world. I mean, it could be a direct cross-over, but wouldn't need to be in order to produce the same results.
I'd be into that for sure. For me just about anything beats fantasy. Zombies might be falling off that list due to overuse though.
Screenshots and new gameplay mechanics. And three of the most annoying people I've ever seen!
Agree. A DS game is too long to be a yearly thing especially with the tens of hours it can take to finish. IINM we've got until whenever in 2016.
Anyway, I wouldn't mind DS1 getting the SOTFS treatment and ported to current gen + PC to run at 60 FPS (PTDE only does 30 unless you apply an unofficial mod). For DS3, Bloodborne level graphics AND a maximum framerate of 60 is what I'd like- so PC version as well, please.

"The Souls that are Dark are to be coming out on the computer that is personal."
I never get tired of seeing this.

Time for rolling
No Bloodbourne for me so I'm hungry for this. 4 player anytime co-op please.
This is the BEST DAY.
The co-op feature from Bloodborne would be an excellent addition.
So much atmosphere, I must see more, give me more now!!!
I love EVERYTHING about that trailer.
Looks great.
Looks incredible. If I could only have one game next year this would be it.
These games are my new Legend of Zelda.
I'm going on media blackout already. It's not like any trailer is going to change my purchase decision on this one.
Goddamn.
God.
Damn.
I played it. I'm really excited! It feels like true Dark Souls again.
Damn... reminds me to finish 2.
Here's some thoughts I wrote up for EGM. I know people say that others (like me) make too big of a deal of Miyazaki being in the driver's seat (or not being there), but this definitely feels like the soul and spirit of the first Dark Souls, as opposed to Dark Souls II. I expect this to end up feeling like the true sequel, and DSII will be the weird aberration side project.
Miyazaki truthers are idiots. Dark Souls 2 is an amazing game.
And the Cowboys won the Super Bowl with Barry Switzer. To me that speaks even more highly of the true talent. They can build something so awesome that momentum can carry on temporarily in their absence.
So Miyazaki is doing 100% of the coding and design and testing of all the games he works on? Lots of people work on these games.
I'm not saying the guy isn't good at his job, I am saying that this idea that only he can make a proper Souls game and DS2 is some shitty garbage because he wasn't directly involved is just wrong.
Jimmy Johnson didn't throw a pass or tackle anybody either.
If you took the team that made DS2 and asked them to develop a new IP, they would fail spectacularly. Miyazaki and the original Demon's Souls team did all the heavy lifting so that Dark Souls II could be reasonably successful even without some of them.
That's not at all what I said. There are hundreds of cases where momentum didn't carry over enough. But to act like the success of a game built in an existing framework is not significantly influenced by the people who built the framework is naive. It's a lot easier to color in the lines than it is to draw.
I really don't get the hate. I thought DS2 was a solid entry in the series.
It was ok, it just wasn't as well designed as Dark Souls 1 was.
I prefer the gameplay in DS2.
I liked DS2, but it was clearly missing Miyazaki's input for boss/level design.
But saying that team would "fail spectacularly" on their own game is fucking stupid.
I'd rather play Dark Souls II over a lot of other similar games out there, no question. But as a Souls game, I hated some of the decisions made, was super disappointed in the world design and layout, and just felt like the whole thing was missing the inspiration that Demon's and Dark had.
Yup. I've never understood the people who say the game was "bad" or "failed". Sure, it may be the weakest entry in the Souls series, but based on it's own merits, it's vastly better than most games out there, and most games in the genre too. A great game, and a solid Souls game.

Dark Souls 3 Beta! Hope I get in.
If you have PS+ you're in now:
http://www.destructoid.com/ps-plus-m...w-314757.phtml
I've still never finished one of these, but downloading.
So it doesn't work yet?? What a cock tease!
Tuesday.
I guess I'll blow the dust off the PS4 Tuesday then. Cool.
So did anyone get into this? Can you still get into it? I just saw the post but link to download it doesn't work anymore, and I can't find it in the PS store. I'm kicking my own ass over this, I really need to check TNL more often :(
Pineapple is your PS3 id the same as your PS4 one? I got in but I probably won't have time to play it. I'll put in your tag and maybe you can use my code.
Is this not streaming? I haven't seen it on twitch.
It's going to start at 8pm pacific tonight. Early word is that streaming will be cool, but we'll find out tonight.
Word.
If anyone PMs me a code to this beta, I'll go through your posts and rep you until I have to spread reputation around before I can rep you anymore. And then I'll spread reputation around until I can rep you again. And then I will mash dark souls. Thanks in Game Boy Advance, Brad underscore Pitt
So if I downloaded the beta without a code will it work?
The email I got said that the beta was released by mistake, and that only those selected would be getting in. It's worth a try though, these "stress tests" and betas always seem to have a load of people that shouldn't be there.
Damn I'm dumb, I thought I was logging into Tapatalk as myself but I guess I created a new account. Whoops.
Anyways I got to play this last night and this morning thanks to the incredibly generous cigs. I won't intentionally spoil anything but I'll tell you all about my first 3 hours with it. First impressions are that it's going to be the best Dark Souls game ever. It stays right around 25 to 30 fps I'd wager, as it looks ever so slightly choppier than Bloodborne and half as fluid as Scholar of the First Sin. Don't know if they plan to change that on release, but it didn't hamper or take away anything from the experience. The level they put you in is absolutely massive, and I assume it will be the first area you play as the enemies start off at the most base level and grow as it goes on. The detail in the level itself is excellent, and while it's not as cluttered with stuff as Bloodborne, the attention to detail is more along the lines of that game. Controls are instantly familiar, but the game moves faster than any Souls game, more akin to Bloodborne in terms of mobility. That was one of my favorite parts actually, being more nimble and mobile while retaining the sword and shield style of Dark Souls that I prefer. Enemies share your new found speed as well.
The menu options for inventory and whatnot are blocked off so there was absolutely no story going on, and also no way to figure out what the new items were about until you tried them, sometimes which still didn't explain it all. Returning items include the Estus Flask, Gold Pine Resin, Alluring Skulls, Black Fire Bombs and Throwing Knives, while theres new things like a Blue Estus and Embers (which are essentially Human Effigies as far as I can tell). Old items may work in different ways, like Gold Pine Resin being applied in a very quick moment instead of taking a few seconds to bathe your sword in it, but it seemed to wear off after one hit.
Attacks are fluid and feel more varied than before. You can use the forward and R1 attack (traditionally a kick or shove) seamlessly in the middle of swinging your sword, which is as awesome as it sounds and also very nasty when you find the enemies who use that strategy on you. With a certain starting shield equipped you can still parry, while the other shield uses the parry button to change your attack to a quick, chargeable 2 handed attack. Very nice for not having to switch between stances mid fight (which you can still do), and also the attacks are different. Charge attacks seem available for at least 2 of the weapons that I found. Enemy lock on distance seems shorter than before, making the focus more on melee than ranged attacks.
Summoning and being invaded works just the same as DS2, although I'm not sure how many people you'll be able to summon (or be invaded by) at one time, as I found only one of each and they both happened around the same time.
Enemy designs look great, with some being very similar to low level DS2 enemies and others being new takes on familiar designs, and the aggression factor seems pumped up. Bonfires look and work just the same, although I didn't see any teleporting to and from yet, which would have been nice. But progressing into the giant level opened up shortcuts all over the place and yet it was still crazy big.
I only encountered a few instances of slightly warping from one place to another, and a little pop up in one area, but besides that I found no real bugs or crashes. The stress test showed a high level of polish and has me deliriously excited for what the rest of the game will hold in April. It's a faster, bigger, more detailed and notably more aggressive Dark Souls, and it's going to be nuts. I only wish I had more than a specific 3 hours to play it later tonight, which looks like it will be the last bit of the stress test. I plan on trying a different class and starting from the beginning again.
Jesus Christ what the hell did Tapatalk do to your formatting?
I wrote that on my laptop, there is no excuse except it was late and I was excited to talk about the game. Now I've signed in as myself on tapatalk.
Dark Souls III will launch on April 12th, 2016 for PC/PS4/XB1 in North America and Europe, Bandai Namco announced today.
Looks like crap, good thing this might be the last one.
wat
The continuance, be attitude for gains.
Did anyone who played this try shield in right hand, weapon in left? Curious to see what that's like this time.
Never considered it, but I haven't tried that in any other Dark Souls, either. Does it change anything from the other way around?
In Dark Souls 2, no. You were ambidextrous in that one and, so far as I recall, there were no differences in what hand you used.
In Dark Souls 1, yes.
You get guard points (frames on an attack where you guard) on a couple attacks that are good for breaking guard. Backhop R1 and the push are two such examples. It's kind of neat but still not the most viable thing. I'd like to see it expanded upon.
I remember distinctly that ds2 wasn't quite ambidextrous. I don't remember the ds2 mechanics, but the move sets were different for each hand, you still wanted your primary in your right.
Hmmm...seems like maybe the only thing that was different was backstabbing/riposting was always tied to R1 so you'd be locked out of those with a shield there.
Wait, no, you're right, there's differences for weapons, but not shields.
God, I am failing miserably at maintaining media blackout on this one. Can't wait!
Not the kind of soundtrack I'd expect for this type of game, but I know it's just typical trailer style.
Man there is FAR too much media out on this game now. Let's plays, streams, spoilers absolutely everywhere. This will be a very long month.
The only thing that I've read that sort of concerns me is that the world is not entirely connected. Instead you are given the ability to warp early between large areas. Along with the hub setup it seems to be be closer to Demon's than Dark Souls in that respect.
One of the best things about DkS1 is how beautifully interconnected the world is.
100% this. Just started a new playthrough yesterday and I almost forgot about the ability to warp not coming for a while, and even then it's only between select bonfires if I recall. The whole thing feels like a nice cohesive package, besides standalone areas like the Painted World and Undead Asylum. They really did it right with this game.
It's so nice going into Capra knowing what to expect, and slaying him the first time instead of pounding my head against a wall for a while. It's almost time for Blighttown.
I'm on complete media blackout, and I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here, but Future Press is NOT doing the official guide - Prima is. :td: Not sure what Bandai was thinking - apparently it was their call; FP wanted to do it.
Balls! Future Press writes Souls bibles. Prima (in my experience) writes garbage. That's a strong disappointment if true.
I wish I loved anything as much as Pineapple loves Souls games.
I've played through everyone of these games with a guide except Demon Souls. I think I actually enjoy them more using the guides.
I hope From is making it easier to play with friends in 3. That's been my only complaint with all these games. Just let us coop with friends, what's the fucking harm in it!?
The initial blind playthrough is a big part of the fun for me. So much of the experience is not knowing. Piecing things together. Having no idea what's coming. Experimenting. The constant discovery. I won't touch the guides until I've finished the campaign at least once, and finding out the stuff From has buried. Then I start fiddling with builds and see how effective they are.
I don't consider myself hardcore or anything - I just love how these games are designed. I get engaged with their systems so easily. Souls/Bloodborne are really the only games I play anymore.
Yeah, I buy all the guides but refuse to look at them until after the first playthrough, the surprise of not knowing what's coming is a huge part of the fun in these games.
So does your wife! ;)
Same boat here as a few of you, I love to explore the games fully and SLOWLY the first time, and then go back through with the Future Press guides after. There is nothing quite like dominating a Souls game on your own and then finding out how much cool shit you missed, it really reinforces the desire to do multiple playthroughs. And I don't have a desire to do them, but I love watching speed runs of these games, preferably All Bosses runs. So many cool little skips and tricks to be learned.
