I don't know how this got greenlit, but here we are. When "YOKO TARO" appeared on the screen i started screaming so loud that i missed that the music was Song of the Ancients and when "NieR" appeared on the screen i was losing my shit. This was the E3 announcement for me, especially since it'll likely be an actual good game instead of something i really like but have to explain why to everyone else.
Also the way Square Enix revealed it in the middle of the most boring business meeting ever was amazing and having Yoko Taro walking in going full Yoko Taro as if it was a normal thing to do was perfect.
Despite Square Enix's love of introducing things before they're underway, this is already being worked on and Taro and Platinum don't seem to drag things out horribly like stupid Nomura so hopefully we'll see it sooner than later!
I think the last time I was that excited about a video game, I'd just found the last copy of Chrono Trigger at Electronics Boutique the day it came out.

This was the most exciting new thing announced for me too! Only concern is it being designed at Platinum.. I hope that doesn't make it MUCH more action-focused than the first one.
Also kind of enjoy the current title "NieR (indecipherable gibberish)".

Yeah, Nier was easily the best left-field announcement this year, hands down. If I'd seen it on a leaked Square-Enix games roster I'd have known the list was fake just by its inclusion. Yoko Taro coming out in the mask was the best stage moment I saw, actually overshadowing nervous yarn-game guy.

It is probably the best good/bad game of the past generation. Or at least, the best good/bad jrpg.
If that interest you, go play it now, don't read anything about it. It is very much 'secret cake' and if you know the cool stuff coming, it will totally ruin the game for you. The special things aren't so special if you are expecting the second coming of mario.

Plus, NieR had to be the least likely cavia IP to get a sequel by Platinum. Winback, Drakengard, and Bullet Witch all seem more readily adaptable to Platinum's style. Everything about this is weird.

We got the dad version on both systems. Not a huge loss. The motives of the father seem more realistic than the motives of the brother (from what I've read).

Let's take a moment to remember this awesome trailer and wonder why so few people were excited about it again.
If they can give me a trailer for the new one this good, that might even be enough. Just thought about this, but now a prettier Nier remake is also a possibility!
And I really hope they keep the "bullet hell" aspect and flesh it out more, but not holding my breath.
Question 3: I read your twitter a lot, and I noticed that you really like Tenka Ippin’s ramen and steak. If you had to erase one of these from the world, which would it be? By the way, when I say erase, I mean that all memories of them ever existing would be gone from you and everyone else in the world.
Yoko Taro: If I’m able to make that decision, that means I have time between hearing the problem and having to give an answer. According to your question, that amount of time hasn’t been determined. In that case, I’d probably stretch out my answer for as long as possible, “hmmmmm, I wonder what I should doooo. Their ramen is good, but so is their steak… Oh, wait, today I think I want to watch Mad Max!”
That Yoko Taro. He's alright.

Further sealing the fate of humanity by removing survival options.

The last couple years in particular have just been nuts. I've got nearly every Final Fantasy, Ys/Falcom game, and Elder Scrolls/Fallout all in one place. A bunch of Idea Factory/NIS/Spike Chunsoft games previously confined to 3DS and Vita are on Steam now. I can play Street Fighter V, Killer Instinct and Guilty Gear Xrd off the same machine. Add Tekken to that list very soon. And of course, I can play all the PC exclusives and GOG-curated classics I want.
There really isn't a reason to have a console that doesn't say Nintendo on it in 2016. It's not 1994 anymore; shit typically works out of the box* and any display/controller combo you want to use is doable.

That'll be one hell of a lot of credit card points. Like 40,000 for the Neo system, 40,000 for the PSVR, 6,000 for the camera, and 6,000 for the game. I only have 52,000+ points right now, and I only use that card to eat out, because they give triple points for that, because gamers are fat. By the time PSVR is actually available in the Sony Rewards store, I'll probably have eaten enough points I guess. Is my excitement level coming through?

I haven't played it yet but watched a few videos. It looks great. You get to fight some huge bots and you can merge with a vicviper/Valkyrie looking thing.
Since nier 1 was a retelling of Ys I/II I wonder if this will be a retelling of MegaMan/Astro boy and the robot masters. The construction bot in the demo could be darker version of megaman's Guts man.

Played a few hours, and love the combat. It's the right balance of Platinum in a game that assumes you might be in it more for the story. So combat is as high tempo, but not as complicated as Bayonetta (at least to start). Plus the way they keep changing the perspective to effectively change the genre is really great too.
It's a shame that it's designed to still have that spoke-like world design (so far) that OoT popularized. It feels way more limited now that BotW is out, and I know that's an unfair comparison to make. But I can't shake it.
18 Mar 2017, 07:37 AM
Fe 26
I don't mind the spoke design. Drakangarudwhatever didn't have it and in many ways was less for it. Nier is also a partial homage to Ys I&II, not OoT. In that regard it is a pretty good continution of that kind of gameplay and world building.
Also, I don't know if the style of BOTW or Skyrim would be useful here. Or at least, it isn't what the creators wanted. in Nier 1 and 2. They are very deliberate with what they want you to see. More so in 2 than 1. There is a conscious effort to frame certain bits of gameplay like film or a comic book panel. It might also be a homage to early pre-rendered PS1 game backgrounds like FF7 and 9. The park reminds me of the Golden Saucer. And robot town of the mage town from 9.
I like the battle system but it doesn't feel as tight as Bayonetta. I blame the color choices. Most of the mobs are a dirty white and they just kind of mush together and it isn't always obvious what the tell is for "here comes something to dodge."
If you like Nier 1 and Bayonetta , it is probably a good buy. If it is anything, it is entertaining. After 6 hours of gameplay, the game is still constantly changing the gameplay up. It can go from Ys Boss style Boss battle, to Vertical shooter, to Horizontal shooter, to platformer, to beatemup/hacknslash, then back to rail shooter. And all styles control pretty well.
Its subtle, but you see little nods to Monster World 4 in there too. The most obvious is the way she hangs off of the bot like the girl did the birdthing from MW4. Less obvious is just how fucking animated she is. When you run, she builds speed and eventually blurs. When you're going up ladders you can make her speed up and she will just lunge upward. If you want to go back down faster she will catch the side of the ladder with the heel of her shoe and slide down.

I don't really care for the save / continue system. It has one similar to ZombiU in that if you die, you go back to the Bioshock like save point, but you have to hunt down your body. Otherwise you lose some of your shit.

Something like half the game is the same. Bosses use a mix of bullet hell and melee weapons. The game world is a series of small areas that link together in much the same way. Few towns. Small areas. Eventually you learn to talk to / hear monsters, but you won't be able to on the first half. The ending area is a huge tower. The two guiding characters are twin girls.
Yeah, there are probably like 10 or more other games it pays homage to (like the Resident Evil house and lab, with a lab that has the camera perspective of shinra at the start of FF7) but Ys I&II is probably the biggest in that the major plot points are kind of whatifs of Ys. Like someone played Y's and thought "what if the whole planit is like this shitty barren island?" or "man, now that I can talk to the monsters, I'm kind of a dick. Some of these monsters are nice guys." Espically that second one. That must have really stuck with Yoko Taro or one of the writers as a child. Because that is the biggest punch Nier 1 has. "what if I'm a dick and these monsters are actually ok people?" And that is lifted straight from Ys I&II
18 Mar 2017, 03:38 PM
Fe 26
Not that they are particularly clever for that. Nier was suppose to be their last game. And the director liked to make games that effected people emotionally. They probably had a meeting at work and asked people what games impacted them the most, and things like Ys or Resident evil came up.
Using the small compact level design of YsI/II was probably just as much a pragmatic choice as a homage. It was suppose to be their last game. They needed to keep it small enough to finish and get out the door.

Feels more like Dark Souls to me. You don't really lose that much; just your equipped chips (and some experience). Both are plentiful. Picking up your previous body spares you the hassle of manually reequipping the chips.
I'm on my third playthrough. This game just gets more and more badass each time through. In case you were getting a little bored after the first two playthroughs, the game REALLY ups the ante after ending B.
I don't see the resemblance to Ys I&II at all, unless you were talking specifically about NieR 1. And even if you were, I don't see much resemblance beyond generic action RPG tropes.

It appears that you can take control of any non-boss robot in the game. I haven't figured out how to return to your original body after doing this, other than doing a manual save/reload or committing suicide.
I really like how the game uses perspective to play with the narrative, in a way that subverts the expectations of players of the original Nier.

It really is. MC is animated as good as Alucard from SOTN. Moving around is fun. She even has a speed run similar to the wolf form.
I'm still a bit frustrated with the battle mechanics. It doesn't appear that they intended for you to use bot attacks while doing melee.
Like, you bot target with left trigger, and bot laser/special with left top button. And the camera is right analog, and melee is x and Y. Then normal bot shot is right top botton.
I'm having to do some serious hand acrobatics to fight with the robot and sword at the same time while controlling the camera.

Try the melee pod special attacks! The hammer is pretty useful, especially in the forest. And don't forget you can counterattack after doing a perfect evade. There's 3 different counters: hit R1 for a massive gun blast, and the light attack/heavy attack counters vary depending on equipped weapon.
(It took me a while to figure out the counter system; the game isn't super clear about it :/)
