I don't think it's an extreme. It's a principle, like theft or murder. Why live in a country which doesn't trust you with arms? The more trust a society put in one another, the less fearful they are of one another. It the difference between living in light or living in the dark. I would rather live in a society where drugs and weapons are available within the law and every record is transparent, than one in which all the drugs and weapons are had illegally and records are closed off. Hidden in the dark vs. total transparency.

There is one good reason: because I want one.

And the data supports that is ok. No crime has been committed by a legally owned MG by a civilian. Ever. The two crimes commited are by cops that stole them from police armories.

Secondly, where do you think museums get things? Like 80% or more of it is from private owners. There isn't a federal closet of rare guns to send out to musuems. What they do have, they keep.

But could it be that "machine guns" have not been used to commit crimes because they were harder to get, historically?

I think there's an obvious compelling interest to restricting the availability of some of these weapons.

Restrictions is fine. Outright banning them when no legal owners have done wrong with them, no.

illegally owned MGs were probably once legally owned MGs unless they were smuggled in the country? If you make MGs illegal, the only way to get one is smuggling, which means MGs become far more expensive on the black market which would essentially restrict them to organised crime.

The mafia isn't going to shoot up an elementary school or church. Just the police and other organised crime, who have guns.
