Given the facts, it isn't hard to beleive that the idea of a gay rich black man that likes young men freaked the cops out and things were exagerated. Espically since some conservatives already assume most gay men want to diddle small boys.
I'm more inclined to beleive he was a gay jarred than a pure child but bungler. Or just kind of crazy. But I haven't ever heard of anything that said, yes, 8 year old ass rape.
