admittedly, I stopped giving a shit about malls when they made a shift away from a diverse marketplace to one that focused almost entirely on clothes
In the 80s and 90s there were electronic stores, toy stores, book stores, music stores, etc
Now most of them are 99% clothes and one gamestop
you can thank the internet for that.
The closest mall to me is pretty much dead. It had a Target for about six months, but other than that, the only real anchor has been the grocery store.
You can go in any day of the week, at any time, and not see more than a dozen other shoppers in the mall itself.
I'm not sure I mind. Malls destroyed downtowns in a lot of small cities, and now online shopping is doing the same to malls. It's the circle of life.
Target Canada was such a disaster. You don't just waltz in when the dollar is doing well and have half empty shelves with prices worse than Walmart and expect to succeed. The store near me was a ghost town whenever I went in. And this was in a busy mall, the second or third largest in the country.
Malls were for a specific time and place, when the US was very prosperous, middle class had a lot of money, and were moving to suburbs in droves.
Nowadays that's not the case, and a lot of stuff that used to fill a mall could be had online. The mall I worked at had 3 large CD stores.
Besides clothing, it seems like malls are increasingly becoming centres for food, which makes sense. Food-focused malls get plenty of traffic. One near me somehow manages to sustain six bubble tea places in close proximity.
The new thing around Texas is the outdoor strip malls. It's basically a bunch of strip malls all bunched up within one huge parking lot. I think they kind of suck, especially in the hot summer. This is a more affordable solution for mall owners, because they don't have to run AC and heating for one giant building. It's like they are purposely killing off existing malls, so they can tear them down to make the more affordable strip mall centers. I know that the owners of Valley View went out of their way to make sure that they could kill off that mall's shopping traffic, so they could tear it down and make a business/strip mall complex in its place. They allowed a hip-hop station to setup shop there, and had Steve Harvey hosting a morning show right by the main entrance to the mall. That station brought in all of the undesirable patrons and the people with money decided to shop elsewhere. Now the mall looks like South West mall on the bad side of Dallas.

That's the strip malls I'm talking about. It's basically a bunch of strips malls crammed into one huge lot. There's nowhere to park and when you do find a spot, you have to walk a long ways to get to where you're going. It's not an ideal shopping situation, especially when it's a 100 degrees outside.Quote:

I see Outlet Malls now in my woods. Basically, outlet shops were started as dumping grounds for overstock and irregular stock, but they've become so popular that all the name brands are making shitty knockoffs of their existing stuff and putting them in their own stores.
Theres a ton of those non mall strip malls in sac suburbs - i was just at one yesterday! I miss old malls so much. There wasn't anything like going to a crowded, decorated, well-stocked mall around christmastime circa 1998 or so. Stores have cut back on their stock so much because of online shopping, which is fine because it's far easier to shop online than what is in person nowadays. But...you know, I still miss the good old days.
The food, the arcade, looking at things in the nonclothes store. Reading books you had no plans of buying only to turn around and buy a magzine.
The mall in my hometown is worthless now if you're not interested in fashion. Besides a Gamestop and an Apple store, everything that wasn't overpriced clothes is gone. :\
Even clothes stores (usually niche ones like skater shops and hot topic) would have magazines and books to read, places to chill and browse, stuff like that. There was a place back in the late 90s/early 00s called Skin Market, which was a combination Sephora and Lounge .... Basically they encouraged you to sit and use testers to paint your nails, read the latest magazines, or just sit and talk. It was such a fantastic store....I miss the atmosphere a lot of a time when shopping was a leisurely, all day activity.
The local mall near me has about 33% of its suites unoccupied. That has more to do with the old lady who owns the place squeezing it dry than the economy, but it's a shadow of its former self. And the stores that remain aren't any I'd really go to. I used to go there for Gamestop, Play-n-Trade, Borders, Kay-Bee, and Sears Brand Central. Now, all but Sears are gone, and they don't sell games anymore. There's nothing in that mall for me. When I was a kid, you could hang out at the mall all day, even if you were broke. Now, there's no reason really to even go.

A few sections of NYC are functionally open air malls, just a bunch of stores all standing next to each other on the street. They get tons of business, but that's because it is part of the area instead of being a faraway place you drive to. That's probably what they are going for with the outdoor strip malls gamevet describes, but it's fucked up and dumb because suburbia.

Yeah, there's a ridiculous fake pageantry about them, but both of the ones up here add a good amount of real worth to the their respective areas.
I know of one in Virginia and it's ok. I think it's ok because it has real estate so people actually live there. So for those people they do get a walkable area with services they can use. It also has offices so actual work unrelated to retail gets done.
It's nothing like a real city obviously, and it's not even like the suburbs with a defined town center that you see in the Northeast. So you get into the problem where the stuff that gets put into there are the things that maximize profit for developers rather than things that maximize usefulness for the residents.
I can't remember the last time I went to a mall. I buy pretty much 90% of my things from Costco. Sprinkle in some Amazon or whatever online/cheap, I don't think I will ever need to go to a mall.
I'm going to a mall fairly soon because I have to try on a jacket before I buy it online. I go once every couple years.

I was questioning that. If he bought debt for 1/2˘ on the dollar, it's written off, right? And if it's written off, how much does paying off this debt help the debtor? Will it raise their credit score? Or is it a symbolic gesture that's practically meaningless?
At the very least, it means these people won't get harassed at home, at their job, etc. That's basically how these debt sharks do it, just harass and bother people until they give up some money.
I had a couple of friends who use to get phoned by them all the time. It was pretty funny watching them pretend to be each others secretary or transfer the debt shark through different incorrect "departments".
Seems like a bad investment, but I guess it isn't since people obviously do it.

I already proposed the solution to that by standardizing food stamp equivalents. You get huge economies of scale, and you take away the ability of people with their hands out to make decisions that further cost those that are burdened by them. Here's your chicken, green beans, apple, whole grain bread, and milk, same as the next guy in line.
edit: And if you're unemployed, you get to work on one of the farms where the food comes from until you find something more lucrative.
