What Are You Playing? (Winter, 2015-2016)

The developers had a great decked out arcade cabinet set up at a game event in SF before it launched. I'm glad to finally get to play it! I really like that the 'laws' of the game are so simple and consistent, lots of ways to improvise.

I've been playing a lot of Galaxy Force II and Space Harrier on the 3DS Classics Collection, and the sweet arcade music motivated me enough to write an article on the composer, Hiroshi Kawaguchi. Good god is this man talented. It was surprising to find that he still had the 8'' floppies of the sound data for After Burner II!

What kind of computer used 8" floppies in the 80s?

Did he mean 5 1/4? Is there a dick joke here?

They're on Floppies VIII in Japan.

A lot of old mini-computers and terminals used those fuckers. The military uses them to store ICBM launch codes, too.

Geometry Wars 3 - I am addicted to this game, trying to 3 star every stage. Some require serious skill (and luck), like the pacifism stages and some boss stages require different strategy to hit the 3 star threshold. My eyes get all blurry after 2 hours of playing but I just can't stop. I don't see anyone from TNL (at least on ps3), wish more of you are on this.

NBA Jam On Fire edition - Going through the Road Trip, the gold+ stages are BS with the computer never missing anything. Only way to win is to pick a decent 3 point + tough team and keep shoving them and shoot 3 pointers.

I have GW3 on PC. Some levels I really enjoy and some I kind of hate. I don't like the shape of all the playfields.

Also, Towerfall is great as a single player or local co-op game too. It really is like Joust in that regard, with the element of a deathmatch on top of that 'Joust' mode. Plus a nice expansion pack.

They also stream the towerfall championships from the Folsom street foundry in SF. Some of the movement tricks in the game are really cool.

Wait it really is good? I thought Joust was being sarcastic.
