The developers had a great decked out arcade cabinet set up at a game event in SF before it launched. I'm glad to finally get to play it! I really like that the 'laws' of the game are so simple and consistent, lots of ways to improvise.

I've been playing a lot of Galaxy Force II and Space Harrier on the 3DS Classics Collection, and the sweet arcade music motivated me enough to write an article on the composer, Hiroshi Kawaguchi. Good god is this man talented. It was surprising to find that he still had the 8'' floppies of the sound data for After Burner II!
What kind of computer used 8" floppies in the 80s?
Did he mean 5 1/4? Is there a dick joke here?
They're on Floppies VIII in Japan.
A lot of old mini-computers and terminals used those fuckers. The military uses them to store ICBM launch codes, too.
Geometry Wars 3 - I am addicted to this game, trying to 3 star every stage. Some require serious skill (and luck), like the pacifism stages and some boss stages require different strategy to hit the 3 star threshold. My eyes get all blurry after 2 hours of playing but I just can't stop. I don't see anyone from TNL (at least on ps3), wish more of you are on this.
NBA Jam On Fire edition - Going through the Road Trip, the gold+ stages are BS with the computer never missing anything. Only way to win is to pick a decent 3 point + tough team and keep shoving them and shoot 3 pointers.
I have GW3 on PC. Some levels I really enjoy and some I kind of hate. I don't like the shape of all the playfields.
Also, Towerfall is great as a single player or local co-op game too. It really is like Joust in that regard, with the element of a deathmatch on top of that 'Joust' mode. Plus a nice expansion pack.
They also stream the towerfall championships from the Folsom street foundry in SF. Some of the movement tricks in the game are really cool.
Wait it really is good? I thought Joust was being sarcastic.
It's great
Towerfall is really good. Tiny little sprites that can double jump and air dash try to hit each other with chargeable arrows in fun arenas.
The arrows can knock off your hat in near misses or impale your corpse on a wall.
The "X-Men: Next Dimension" for the modern game player!
I got Injustice for "free" and never even touched it.
Is there a term similar to 'purple prose' for overwrought game design?
"Indie"
lol
Flawless Victory
Ys Seven (PSP): Playing on Vita in Hard mode. Got three of the Dragon Stones, and found Mishera's Aerial Orb useful during a boss battle. It takes 100 SP (empties the ENTIRE damn blue gauge) but can do good damage, about 1500-3000.
Super Hang-On (arcade): Almost cleared the Africa course. Much better than the Genesis version (I think Sega should have delayed it and used a 6 Mbit cart instead of 4- look how good the 8 Mbit Out Run on Genesis is), because of its faster feel and HW scaling.
PixelJunk Nom Nom Galaxy - this seems like it was made to cater to the 'crafting' kids. The movement is really boring.
Helldivers - finished the tutorial. Seems kind of fun! Odd twinstick-y game. I like that they're incorporating 'contra code' style inputs for calling in weapon/support drops.
Firewatch - a pretty, moody game! Feels like the early bits of "Alien Isolation" in that they have a really meticulously crafted environment to explore. Not sure what it's adding up to, but the compass navigation is neat.
Danganronpa - Going back to my save from a year ago. Some of the dialogue grates on me but at least it's fast paced and I like the whole murder mystery thing.
The Order: 1886 - Going back to my save from two months ago. This still kind of sucks. I think I'm done with it.
Wolfenstein: The New Order - Going back to my save from a month ago. I must be getting close to the end. This game is good and has some kick ass weapons but I never felt it was memorable enough to warrant all the internet hype. I guess this gen has been weak for FPS so far.
Pillars of Eternity-This is pretty good. Some of the best writing I've seen in a game for one, and goes in directions it probably couldn't tied to the D&D license. The text bits are actually my favourite part. On the other hand, I don't have familiarity with its Not-D&D system and would prefer mechanics I already know and love to learning new rules that do the same things, so that's a double-edged sword and I wish there wasn't need felt to keep the lame shit like elfs and dwarfs, etc.
It seems a worthy successor to the Infinity Engine stuff, falling just behind the best of it (Torment and BGII). The older I get though, the more strongly I feel that crpgs (both western and chan) require a level of abstraction requiring imagination and implication vs explicitness for me to really enjoy, and the IE games seem just ever so slightly past where my ideal threshold is. So I prefer stuff like the Gold Box games to this.
I've got some time in it, but I'm putting it on the shelf for now, though, partly because I would prefer to wait until I have all the expansions, etc, with it, and really because playing it gave me the itch to finally go through and finish Planescape:Torment.
It starts strong but seems to fizzle out halfway through. Even some of the ridiculous set pieces later in the game never really managed to hold my interest for long. I think the game's just too long.
The game couldn't make its mind up on design, story, etc. I half way wonder if they bought another game and converted it, or thought they were going to lose the licence and so they never went 100% in.
It felt as much like Europe as the Xbox Riddick game did.
The game was made by a bunch of Swedes. I think they knew exactly what they were doing when they designed the world.
The only thing I really didn't like about it was the stealth part because I just wanted to shoot my guns
Time Crisis 5: Around 4.5M again but with a 1 credit clear. Earlier I tried using machine gun on the Stage 1 boss' first four porthole guns to milk for hits but didn't care for the result (worse stage clear time, and the combo bonus didn't IMO make up for it), so I went back to shotgunning them off. There are very few good places to use MG and this is NOT one of them.
Street Fighter V: I don't know why, but I just suck so bad at this. I've tried many different characters but none of them are clicking. I don't want to give up on it, but its pretty demoralizing losing to people who are obviously shit at it. If only Bison was the same as in SF4...
Chivalry: I've always been terrible at this game but I still enjoyed it, but for some reason this time around I've been getting in the top 3 players or so pretty consistently. This game has the most satisfying combat out of any game I've played in a long time. I hope more games come out with similar brutal melee combat (fingers crossed that Kingdom Come delivers the goods).
World of Warcraft: Picked this up again out of curiosity. I've been keeping it very casual and really enjoying myself. I think the new expansion is much friendlier to casual play.
I'm totally in the same boat on SFV, man. All my familiar reads are gone, I play about as well as a Labrador chewing on a controller right now.
Still having fun, but I am taking my lumps for sure. Maybe 30% win rate online? 20%? Who knows, stats are still broken.
Oddly, I was doing pretty well with SFV, despite sucking hard at SF4.
Most of my super-unsafe shit in SFIV that I could get away with thanks to the certain properties of reversals and the generous throw range is totally wiped out, I'm going through that awkward overthinking-while-playing phase instead of just jumping in and kicking ass every round.
Normals are very strong in this game!
I've been playing a whole lot of the popular computer video game Bloodborne. I haven't touched SF5 in a week and haven't even started Fire Emblem. Street Fighters and Fire Emblems are usually pretty momentous occasions in my gaming life.
I'm on the verge of going full Pineapple here.
Replaying Shovel Knight, on appraisal I think I like this better than any classic Mega Man. There's so much variety in the gameplay, they did a great job making it feel good on its own merits and not like a knockoff.
Just pew pew pewing on world of tanks
Cleared Shovel Knight, going through the "Plague of Shadows" New Game + where you play as Plague Knight. Completely different feel to the game, totally different mechanics. I really like it.
I spent the afternoon with a bag of pretzels, some soda, and Golvellius on the Master System. Damn, was it fun! I haven't that kind of old school game session in a while, and I really enjoyed it. Golvellius holds up very well, and the music is very good! I got about halfway through, and I plan to save the second half for next Sunday.
Those little snakes still give me the heebie jeebies.
I hit 200 hours in ftl.

I can't believe I couldn't find a bigger version.

I'm actually on topic, been playing Yellow on the 3ds this week. I've never actually played a Pokemon game before.
Started up Black Desert Online a couple days ago, and despite trying out one of the early betas and being excited for it this one still managed to blow me away now that I've dug into it. The combat is really good, as I already knew from trying it, but I hadn't really realized the depth of the sandbox efforts that are throughout. Setting up trading lanes, hiring workers, planning out housing, speaking to everyone to unlock new conversations and new quests, farming, and so many details everywhere. Running instead of using mounts levels up stamina, monsters are more prevalent and stronger at night, rain prevents certain crafting actions as opposed to just being window dressing, etc.
It's just sandbox-y enough to give a sense of freedom and exploration but is user friendly in smart ways, so that everyone has access to housing and it's not just PKing 24/7 outside of cities. It's everything I expected from ArcheAge and was let down by, although the somewhat musou-like action might deter some people. It also has no real "functional" endgame to speak of, just grinding skills and skill rerolls and large scale PVP, but I am loving it right now.
You are doing it wrong! AoE grind mobs to max level, don't deal with any of the NPCs! ;)
I was making my BDO ranger and couldn't make regular looking green eyes... so back to Blade and Soul.
They released the UNCHAINED content on wednesday and with that comes the 8th floor of Mushin's Tower. It's a nightmare for my class.
My bad, slashy slashy slashy
You have to pick a dark green because of the transparency, look near the end of this video for an example.Quote:

I briefly played around with the warlock in B&S, it seems pretty awesome. I might try for that level 45 challenge to get the outfit.
Started playing Bulletstorm again, this time on 360. This game is just the best.
Phantasy Star (SMS): The first time I beat this, I didn't make or use any maps. I have no idea how that was possible now, though. Just whupped the Saccubus' (lol spelling!) ass with a belt, I wasn't even sure that fight could be won! You don't get anything for it though. This is the only game I think I've ever played that could make a good movie or cartoon. I'm looking forward to going through a re-translation with FM synth now!
When I was young, I really wanted to see a live-action Phantasy Star movie with Jennifer Connelly as Alis.
And Black Desert is one of those times I get jealous of PC gamers.
MGS V: The Phantom Pain - I'm on episode 26. It feels like a rare occasion nowadays to have something this ambitious come out of Japan. I love the freedom in the missions but if I'm really only halfway to the end, I hope they mix it up a bit. Potentially dragging on would be my only big complaint.
I have 240 hours logged in FTL now.
