I can't wait. I've been watching older episodes and it still holds up really well.
It's the best show ever made and I'm excited! I saw a clip on a daytime talk show of the new series, and I totally cried because it was like seeing old friends again :P
Early reviews say it's shit.
You shut your whore mouth, Rumpy.
That opinion was not my own.
Shoot the messenger
Twice. In the head.
With a Nerf dart.
Justi has been rewatching it over the last year and it has intensified in recent weeks. On her birthday I asked her if she wanted to do anything and she said "order Chinese and watch X Files all day". Catching eps while I'm otherwise internetting, seems like a 70/30 split of good to bad.
I'm really enjoying the reboot - though I hadn't watched the 8th and 9th seasons though, so I'm clearly missing quite a few plot points. The only very odd thing bothering me is that it sounds in a few scenes like they were using a microphone that picked up a lot of hissing. There's a few spots where mulder and scully are dialoguing in hallways and their voices sounds really weird - not sure if this was some sort of digital transfer issue/etc. Who knows!
But anyway, enjoying seeing the cast again.
Actual line from the second episode: "I know you Want to Believe™, Mulder! You Want to Believe™ so badly that The Truth is Out There™!"
This show kinda blows. Is Emily someone I was supposed to remember from back in the day or does this show just like to answer questions it forgot to ask?
First episode was bad. They had to play catch up, explain the characters to some new audiences, I get it. It was fucking bad though. Plot was shit, acting was shit, dialogue was shit. Nothing good about it. I mean, over a decade of not working for the FBI and for basically no good enough reason they're back. Terrible, college level shit.
Episode 2 was awesome.
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean, I don't know why it's only going to be 6 shows - seems like once they get to the 4th episode or so it will really gain steam again. I knew the first episode would be sort of ridiculous, because the first episode of the series was ridiculous. Why wouldnt the FBI use the office for 12 years??? and then he kicked the poster!! :( :( :(
To me the value of the first episode was to bring the overarching plot line to the present, and I thought it did a good job at that. I certainly didn't expect the conspiracy curveball, but it certainly fits better with 21st Century worries. There was definitely some painful dialog and acting involved in delivering the message though. I haven't watch the second episode yet, so I am glad to hear it's back on track more fully.
I just kept waiting for Troy and Ahbed in the morning to start during the first ep
First episode should have been stretched over 2 episodes so there was some breathing room. The 2nd episode was just okay, on par with a below average older episode.
It's shot way worse than it used to be, and the writing doesn't feel as natural, but overall they're doing a pretty good job of making it feel like X-files, particularly with the score. It still has the potential to be really good.
I realized that last night when I was thinking about it - it's so bright compared to the old X-Files!!!! I wonder if the leap in television technology is adversely affecting our vision of what we are used to?
I think it's more than just being in HD. The atmosphere is a bit off as is the dialogue. I will keep watching, though. I wonder how many people from Continuum will appear in this. I have seen three so far.
clearly they've gone back to filming it in vancouver if the Canadian All Stars are showing up on it
Third episode was awesome
The third episode was one of the best pieces of modern TV I've seen for a bit. Very excellent.
Gawker ran an article (that I won't link) panning it for being transphobic. Specifically, the part where Mulder explains the concept to the lizard man. Also, for featuring a transgender prostitute.
We're living in South Park.
Wow, transphobic? I mean....the whole point of the show is both Mulder and Scully coming to terms with a lot of new modern media, experiences, etc. I felt like by including that scene, it was showing that Mulder himself was musing over the change that society has made (acceptance of transgender individuals) since he was last in the field. Love these clickbait bullshit articles that nitpick events for the pure sake of advertising dollars.
I feel like the real thing being advertised in articles like these is the author's attendance of a cultural studies class.
A television show can't be transphobic any more than it can be hungry. What are we doing here.
HA! excellent point.
Maybe the author of that piece is tired of trans people being portrayed as drug addled sexual deviants?
Still doesn't make this show transphobic though.
It's a stereotype because they exist, anyway.
Everyone in the entire town was loaded, which made them unreliable. The trans lady's drug addledness served narrative ends. I groaned the twentieth time the motel manager was shown taking a swig of rubbing alcohol thinking "Okay, yes, we all get it." But I guess not all of us did.
I was about to cut bait on this show, but that werelizard was so good.
The only trans person I can think of who isn't a hot mess is the one on Orange is the New Black and she's in fricking prison. I know the stereotype exists but it seems pretty much the default portrayal at this point.
The most visible trans people are prostitutes who spend most of their time in public areas. It's a non issue.
Last night's episode was amazing. I'm so sorry this is only a few episodes long and a lot of people have dropped off already due to the lame first episode.
This is a really shitty stance and it also proves that there is an issue with the portrayal of trans as a group – they're just assumed to be this really negative stereotype. I know several trans women and they're good humans. If you made that kind of comment about ANY OTHER minority group it would be lauded racist.
I don't think that makes anyone on XFiles transphobic but I can completely empathize with someone being upset that their tribe is portrayed so shittily in pop culture.
Anyway I'll leave it be as not to derail the thread.
Trans people are weird. They have to accept that. It doesn't mean they're worth any less than other folks, but it does mean they're a curiosity. I have tattoos on my knuckles. I understand people associate that with certain things. It's ok.
It's not a stance, it's just an observation. For many people, the only obviously trans women they see are the ones putting themselves on display on street corners. The reasons for that are as unfortunate as the result, but that doesn't make it not so. The show is just reflective of a common perception, and the stereotype is part of that.
