So Sega is asking gamers to take a survey and wants to know what we really think of them. I took it already but I wasn't as nice as I'd like to be. Kinda sad when they mentioned favorite Sega IPs they didn't list Shining Force.

My 3 adjectives were poor, lacking, unfulfilling.
I took this earlier too after bVork mentioned it on Twitter. The upside is that they remember most of their good IPs exist.
Sad Old Husk were my words.
So many shitty mobile questions.
I didn't get that many. Of course, they did ask why I don't game on mobile devices, so maybe that's why.
I was surprised by some of the consoles they listed. Amiga CD32 actually made that list, and I did play it in the last 90 days.
"Please go back in time and drown Sonic in a bathtub."
I used decayed, declined, dilapidated.

You guys are being very rude and disrespectful to a company that not only makes the excellent Yakuza games, but has recently shown a bit more effort in bringing them to the US in a somewhat timelier manner. Think about your behavior.
They did bring out bayonetta and Valk chronicles.
But they dropped the ball on 2 and the sequels to vc
I appreciated Alien Isolation / Afterburner Climax / Outrun Online Arcade... though the latter two have been cast into oblivion.
Not really sarcastic, but I see your point. The lack of a SoA sequel after all these years, the way they let Shenmue rot on the vine... Some fuckery, for sure. The renewed western push for Yakuza games is probably just battered spouse syndrome on my part. "Maybe they really DO love me..."
- What they've done to Sonic
- Ignoring their classic catalog (how many times have they turned down a new Streets of Rage?)
- Leaving PSO 2 in Japan
God, I could go on and on. When the DC died, I expected Sega to become one of the premier software houses in the world. The thought of all that creativity on every console was mind-blowing. I guess hardware was to Sega what hair was to Samson, because the company let most of its major talent leave and hasn't done squat with its properties since. So much promise and potential wasted.
It makes you wonder if their budget was all console sales.
Or if they lost everything in bad investments when their economy slowed down. Like, where did all the money go?
I think a large part of it starting going down when they sat on their asses thinking they were just going to keep making money. When they beat Nintendo, they could have gone much further but instead they made stupid choices. A lot of people lost their trust in Sega as a developer when they started doing stupid shit with their IPs. Sonic Generations imo was the last best Sonic title they ever did and even then it was a hard sell for them. Alien Isolation was them doing shit right. They made a game which got rave reviews & gave people hope that Sega would be able to make quality titles and then they tripped and fell flat on their faces with Sonic Boom.
Right now Sega is in a position that's neither good nor bad but, They could literally become a AAA producer if they listen to their fans but not too much and bring out something solid, catching, and make people go fucking nuts grabbing their dicks trying to get into their games like Nintendo does when they add some sort of retro thing to their games and people love it.
The only positive thing I've seen in terms of tapping into their history is M2 for the Sega 3D games for the 3DS. Sega needs to expand on that idea into consoles.
Can you imagine an M2 console remake of Revenge of Death Adder or Shinobi? Holy shit.
I don't really know how Nintendo stays around either. Do kids like that world of gaming anymore? Maybe they're just better at milking fans?
I don't know if sega can live off of their fans. Maybe they're too thrifty? Too smart for their own good? I see a lot of vintage gamers that won't buy a game over 1 or 2 dollars in price.
How big is this audience for old ass Sega IP? Dreamcast had some of the best games they ever made and it was a huge failure, nobody cared. And in the interim we've had 15 years of nobody caring.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love a new Shinobi or Streets of Rage or whatever, but it's not like beat em ups or ninja action games are super popular these days. The idea that the only thing keeping Sega from becoming an upper tier publisher is a fucking Shining Force 3 remaster is a bit delusional IMO.
Kinda bummed 3D Classics wasn't a set-up for sequels done right. 'Here's a Mega Drive style SOR 4, we've been working with the original team so much on the 3D ports so we just snuck this out.'
Sega's best selling IP at this point has to be either Total War or Football Manager, doesn't it? They're not a console company anymore. I miss when they were an arcade company personally.
Derby Manager wat wat
I'm not saying that those kinds of games would match what Call of Duty or the like do each year, but there must be some market for them no? It seems like so many "indie" developers desperately try to recreate the 16 bit era, and it seems quite a few of them find success.
I would see there could be a possible market for Sega to tap into some of that. Like a Mega Man 9 and 10 sort of thing.
Fuck that. We don't need major publishers making retro games that also fail to be as good as the real thing. If a new Streets of Rage or whatever comes out in 2016 or beyond, it needs to look like Xrd in terms of tech. The related problem is that Sega doesn't have the internal talent anymore to nail the gameplay either most likely.
I think talent/resources is a problem, Sega isn't a big company, it's tough to justify dropping tens of millions of dollars on a AAA update of Greendog.
Even if Sega tried to make a small Mega Man 9 style game... go play Sonic 4 and see how that could turn out.
Edit: I say this and think a Shining Force 3 remaster would actually be a good fit for today's market, what with XCOMs and all. But that's maybe the exception.
Speaking recently, Tembo was pretty good, but launch-day technical problems really messed with that game.
They should probably do just PC at this point. Maybe even go as far as doing mainly steam like releases. That would probably be the best way to get money out of their aging, cheap ass fanbase.
It would also allow them to release to the US, UK, EU and Brazil, all at the same time and avoid waste on supply chains.
Maybe spice it up with LE physical copies on release dates, and physical copies from their online store.
They should be all over VR. Sega got big in large part by being on the cutting edge with their arcade machines, and now they're ignoring what could be a revolution in 3D simulation technology.
I thought Sega tried during the PS2/Xbox era, to varying degree of success. Orta, Toejam 3, Outrun 2's, NFL 2K's, Gun Valkyrie, Spikeout. I guess those didn't do well enough, or whatever.
Also: JSRF, Shinobi, Sega GT. Nobody cared about these games, except 2K and maybe Outrun.
Smegma Mastur System.
Streets of Rage 4? Just sell the franchise to ASW so Team Red can hit it.
Late 90's-2000's SEGA was good. They should remake or give a sequel to Power Drift on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Some 3D courses like this but with today's 3D tech would be impressive, as long as the game runs at 60 FPS.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is still my favorite kart racer.
Alien Isolation was alright.
I can't remember the last original SEGA-published game that interested me before those two.
Surely there's something I'm forgetting between those two and F-Zero GX?
I wanted to like Sonic & All-Stars, but I can't get behind kart racers.

I'm often a defender of mobile games. I actually have an idea for a free-to-play mobile game in my head that I'd really like to pursue. But so many of these companies do not get how to make these games fun to the 99% of people that do not want to sink money into them, and Sega's no exception. They've made some pretty great paid mobile games, but they don't even do that anymore, and then went as far as to yank them from the store.
What? My old galaxy had nothing but Sega games on it pretty much.
My Galaxy has SEGA games on it, but not officially.
Wrote, "Lazy, apathetic, Unfulfilling" in the 3 adjectives part.
It's a smaller hardcore audience (of which I am one myself) but I think they should still be trying to tap into it to make at least SOME headway with their owned IP's.
It's sad to see such a low output of Sega games currently considering the wealth of IP that they own. I'm actually surprised they haven't gone the Capcom route and released more remasters of their last gen games and they published some awesome games if you take a look at their overall library like Vanquish, Binary Domain, Sonic and Sega All Stars Transformed, Sonic Generations, Bayonetta, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, Resonance of Fate, & Jet Set Radio HD. They're relatively easy to make money off of and given so many gaps between bigger AAA titles these would have filled in quite nicely.
They don't all have to be AAA sized, usually low to mid budgets can make these games happen as long as they know which studios are a good fit which is why it's baffled me why they haven't released a new Streets of Rage game since 3 and they haven't tried another Phantasy Star Online MMO considering how well it would do on consoles nowadays after Destiny and the promise of the Division.
Part of me also thinks that they need to rebrand themselves with an updated logo and a better representation/celebration of their legacy.
I doubt they will care but I gave them shit for that.
I don't think current Sega is a bad company. They're mostly just another generic publisher now. It's not possible to recreate the same group of people with the market conditions of the '80s and '90s. And even if new Sega were to focus all their efforts on their old franchises, that wouldn't be in the spirit of old Sega anyway. Throughout their hardware years, they frequently put aside or abandoned IP to make new stuff. That's why they had such a huge variety of content.
That said, I wouldn't mind if they gave Griptonite another shot at one of their old franchises, though. Shinobi on 3DS plays great. It's too bad it (I assume) was quickly ported from DS so the graphics ended up being weak and turning people off.
Yeah, I was thinking the Volgarr team. I forgot they were separated from Griptonite.
Nah. I stopped buying phone games.
At least PSO2 will be at PAX 2012
No, I will not let go.
