What Are You Playing? (Spring, 2016)

Hitman (PC) - The way Io is releasing content for this really sells the concept of episodic games. I'm not done with the original package yet, and more is already dropping. The next full level is due next month as well. If they can keep the momentum, I'll be very glad I got in early. As advertised, the game is a nice balance of Absolution and Blood Money. If dosing someone's drink with rat poison and then drowning them in the toilet when they are vomiting isn't appealing to you, I just don't know what's wrong with you.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 (PC) - I haven't given this one the attention it likely deserves yet just due to time, but it's not grabbing me like the first one did. I don't like the single player stuff very much, and I am making myself trod through that first, which might be the problem. I feel like there might be too many classes to keep balanced, and early indications are that the rose is the beneficiary of that imbalance currently.

Fatal Frame 1 (PS3): Bought all 3 FFs from flash sale on PSN, looking forward to running away from ghosts like a little girl.

Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU): Still working through this game

Going to start y's 2 sometime today. Finished 1 last night.

I messed around in the DZ at like level 15. Just hit level 30 last night, so it's time to really become an asshole in there.

I just hit 30 hours on Pokemon Blue. Holy crap is this game a time sink, it doesn't seem like I've been playing that long. I think I'm almost done though, I'm just trying to beat the game, not get 100% completion.

I'm at the second boss in ys2. This is pretty cool. It must have been mind blowing in 89.

It's also striking just how much nier borrows from ys 1 and 2.

You should talk about it in the Ys thread! Also by second one do you mean the guy who jumps around, and you can only damage him when he's landing or just taking off? It's interesting how much emphasis is put on the fire magic in the second game.

Anyone looking for a great MMORPG for PC should check out Blade and Soul. You can jump in and play for free if you want to check it out. The combat is in real time, kind of similar to TERA. A lot of the design is done by Hyung-Tae Kim.

I've been meaning to check out B&S ever since I saw it on a stream and thought it looked pretty cool, thanks for reminding me sedition.

I'm on the Mushin server if you want some help. It'll probably have a queue for free to play people though.

I started playing Zelda OOT on the GameCube last night. I've put in about 3.5 hours so far. I was thinking that I would play it some more this evening, until I was reminded that I'm updating Network hardware at a Chase Bank tonight. :(

I've been spending a lot of time with Culdcept Saga. Goddamn have I never met a game that I've wanted so much to like but it's so determined to make me hate it. I now recall why it got put down 7 or 8 years ago. The cheating ass computer is just too much to handle. It always gets rolls and cards it needs, while I just about always get completely fucked. 1 in 8 chance of landing on the square the opponent massively built up? More like a 1 in 1 chance!
But I am sticking with it. This is the ultimate "play for an hour, get destroyed, come back tomorrow" game.

You'll find that you can overcome the computer's cheating ways, once you load up your deck with a couple of beasts that can be heavily boosted with other cards.

Culdcept Saga is one of my favorites for the 360.

I'm playing Shadow of Mordor. It's pretty cool for a game that practically does nothing original. They took the combat from the Arkham games, the world map and objectives from GTA, the wall climbing and collectibles from Assassin's Creed, and I'm pretty sure the skill tree is "inspired" from another game too, as it looks really familiar; and cobbled together a pretty good game. I absolutely HATE the QTEs when you're dying, but it is cool that you can buy skills to improve that.

Ok does anyone know how to code well enough to do a big pvp mod project on FTL? I want to learn to code to do this shit.

I wasn't sure how pvp would work but I think I got it. 2-4 players start at the edges of a random generated sector.

You can pick a starting ship from a limited amount of starting scrap or points, from a base ship with like 2 engines 1 shield and nothing else.
Max systems are like, 3 or 4.

Once all ships are picked, the game runs in real time. NO PAUSES for any players. You have to race through the sector to the base and then hold the base king of the hill style for like a minute. Timer pauses during battle. Permanent repair stations are random in the map based on how many players are in (Maybe 1 for 2 player, 2 for 3-4 player)

Since there is no pausing you have to race to the repair station and back through neutral jumps to keep one player from holding the base for the required time.

Of course it'd take testing and balancing to get the time and limitations right.

Options would be able to tweak game speed so more casual players could handle no pause.

It would be cool if a travelling store appeared in sector too on a random timer.

Been playing Ys Orgins. It is ok. It is more like tower of Druaga than ys, however.

Its alright. Nothing to just amazing. Levels are ok. Controls are ok. Some of the bosses look cool. I'm half way up the tower and writing is adequate. Nothing too horrible or cheesy. But nothing super interesting either.

This sounds like a great idea! I've been trying to finish a single run of this game but it's very tough, I'd probably do terrible in an online match but it would be fun to try.

Tried out Ryse last night thanks to a really good sale. It's pretty satisfying if not a little average in terms of combat, but the finishers are fun and it looks real nice when heads and limbs are flying. I feel like this may be a short game.

Tried Alex out in SFV, I like his style (fighting-wise, not so much model-wise). Played 14 matches online today and not a single Alex, though, which was a little surprising. Really like that Best of 3 style option for ranked matches, and the time between games seemed a little shorter as well.

Trials Evolution (and HD), going back through all these classic tracks warms my heart, and the ability to upload straight to Youtube after each track is nice. Hopefully I'll have a Gold/Plat run up for every track within a week or two. Trying to do the same thing for Fusion but that one I have to record and upload on my own time, which apparently means days worth of upload time for the big ass files I'm creating while recording.

BoI: Afterbirth - Been doing boss rush runs lately, getting further than I did in Rebirth and it feels good. Still haven't been able to beat Greed mode, although I've only been trying it with Azazel to try and unlock Lilith. Haven't had a single Mega Satan run in this version yet, even when I find the first half of the key real early in the game. Still one of my favorite ways to spend an hour or two.

Banner Saga - Trying to get through the story. I really like the battles and trying to keep everyone alive without healing (I don't even know if theres an option to heal later in the game, hopefully?), but I've long since decided to check out on the actual story, probably because I play it late at night when I'm just ready to kill some dudes and not read a novel.

Miitomo. Yeah, lots of time on the pooper with this one. And between fightmans fights. And when bored by the TV in bed. Holy shit even the notification sounds are super loud.

Subnautica - finally built a little base after making a fabricator, now I don't have to keep swimming back to my escape pod. This is a really nice and relaxing game to experience... Until it becomes night time. IRL I'm not a fan of big bodies of water, especially dark water I can't see through, and so swimming at night in this game gives me REAL fucking anxiety! Then I finally get the nerve up to go scrounging for materials, and all of a sudden something eats me from behind and I have a panic attack and shut the game down. Fun!

South Park SoT - Trying to do another 100% All Achievements run, going to upload it if possible, but I've got to make the files smaller. They did a really good job with this game, IMO.

Dark Souls PTDE - Back in Anor Londo and inside the castle now, only took 4 times to get past that fucking archer. You know which one. Realized I missed out on the Darkwraith Covenant by talking to Frampt too early, totally forgot about that until after doing it, so there will be a NG+ for sure when going for the final achievements again. This game, man.

I got Ryse cause of the sale too. Have not tried it.

I finally beat Dragon Warrior II yesterday. I've started this game several times, even getting all the way to the end once, but one of the caves at the end was simply too much. This time I finally crushed it.

Onward to Dragon Warrior III!

I always felt II was a total slog- I forced myself to finally finish it on Gameboy , but it just isn't fun.

III is probably my favorite game in the series though, although I haven't played VIII or really much of VI.

That's the version I'm playing! Never played any version of 3, what little I've done so far is great.

Broke out the 360, deleted my Burnout Crash save and started over. I really dig that game.

Some of these companies are really holding on to some silly prices for their XBLA games on a dead console. I'd be buying shit all over the place at $5.

It's mostly the older stuff that's overpriced and never goes on sale.
I've always been curious about that weird multiplayer Castlevania game, but the price is just unacceptable.

I have it. It's ok, but probably not worth what they're asking.

I've been playing the campaign for SCII: Legacy of the Void for the past couple of weeks. It started out with some pretty shitty campaign levels, but after you get through the several bad chapters, the game is pretty fun. I'm hoping that I'll finish the campaign in the next week of play.

beat Y's Origins yesterday. not super impressed. Competent but nothing ground breaking. Adds little to the story of Ys.

I would argue that it actually adds quite a lot to the story, explaining concepts like how and why Ys was lifted into the sky, what Darm actually is, and how the Fact bloodline continued down on earth, eventually resulting in Dark Fact. Those were major revelations for Ys fans after The Dawn of Ys was removed from the canon.

Falcom's output was never especially groundbreaking after their golden age in the 80s and early 90s. Enjoy the later games for what they are: lightning quick ARPGs with rad soundtracks and kickass boss fights. I'd definitely tackle The Oath in Felghana next if I were you.

Also, if you ever feel like playing a classic JRPG, check out Falcom's Legend of Heroes series, particularly the Trails installments.

Dunno if I'll use it for GBC though, it shows up very small on a gba screen and a gbc is much more comfortable for long stretches. However, there's no mod out there to make the gbc look half as good as a backlit sp screen.

Hunie Cam Studio. Since I backed Hunie Pop back before I knew how creepy it was gonna get they gave me a code for this too. It's a resource management game with a time limit and zero anime vaginas. I don't know what they're charging for it, but it's pretty good for free. I wish it had hotkeys.

I'm trying to play Lords of the Fallen, but this game is a serious piece of shit. The collision detection is horrible (your swings go right through enemies, and they can shoot through walls!), and the camera is terrible. I know they tried to copy Dark Souls, but all they did is show how good those games are. LOTF is a cheap knockoff that plays like it, and I don't know if I'll finish it.

Alien Isolation (PS4) - You guys weren't kidding about how freaky this game is.

Sunset Overdrive- This is just the kind of game I've needed to play for awhile. Goofy, run around and blow shit up. Really opens up after they give you the super bounce and air glide moves. Weapons are a lot of fun, tons of stuff to collect (used for upgrades) and the multiplayer is pretty great. Some good mission variety keeps things interesting. What Crackdown 2 should have been.

Killer Instinct- I've been away from it for like 3 weeks, but Mira is going to bring me back in.

Wolf Among Us- I liked TT's TWD, so I'm down for this. Through the first Act and it's got me interested in the story. Good companion game to Sunset as they are so much different. Good change of pace and I can get through an Act in one or two sittings.

Tried playing Burnout Paradise again, but I'm not feeling the open world thing this time around. Also went through Skate 3 for the 9000th time and unlocked new achievements.

I never liked BP's open world layout.

Star Wars Screen Tearing Unleashed (360)

Got an Ultimate Sith Edition traded in and put it on display. Looked kinda fun, my son played it years ago and needed help bringing down the star destroyer or whatever ship it was but I never paid attention to it much. I guess in the wake of Force Awakens, I'm in a Star War mood and don't want to play Kotor again (but I do want to play Kotor again) when there's so much else in my backlog.
It's been fairly fun hopping around, force pushing dudes into each other and 'sploding things with lightning. The performance issues are kinda gnarly though. I've been frozen in the geometry twice. One time was in the second level where you're supposed to jump through a hole to get into a ship. I jumped in the hole, and then got stuck in the hole. Dude was just frozen mid air. There's also a shit ton of screen tearing. It's really obnoxious.
I wonder if the PS3 version is any better, or if this is one of the many multiplats that fared much better on 360 despite it being "under powered" in comparison.

I've only played it on PC and had no performance problems, although if I recall I did have to replay a stage because it completely glitched out and was unable to be completed. It's a fun if not very special action game.

Those games are such trash. Total waste of a good idea and cool technology.

There are far more crap Star War games out there than there are good ones, but I've put a few hours into this and it's ok.
Just took out the junkyard boss. He was a pain in the ass until I figured out how handle him.

Been chipping away at Etrian Mystery Dungeon for the past couple months. Once the dungeons get big enough for multiple and strategic fort placement, the game actually gets really good! You get juuust the right amount of money to put you in difficult and meaningful decisions about whether to buy that new piece of equipment, build a fort deep in a dungeon to bookmark progress, or build a shallow fort to help keep a DOE from reaching the surface.

I maxed out a weapon's attack stat and am moving through the final branch of a few characters' skill trees, so figured I had to be getting close to the end at ~30 hours. I peeked at a guide to find I'm only on the sixth of twelve dungeons. That deflated my enthusiasm quite a bit, but I can see myself playing it a half hour at a time for a good long while. It's much better than Izuna or Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.

Is that 12 dungeons before or after the credits roll and the game says "here are some bonus dungeons"?

Pokkyman Super Mystery Dungeon is pretty good, if only because it's the god damned most charming thing ever, but people who know better than me said it's good too.

Ill try Super Mystery Dungeon at some point. Too many tapes right now, though. I haven't even started FE or Xenoblade and have barely scratched the surface of Legend of Legacy.

I've been playing Baldur's Gate quite a bit over the last month or so. I started back up following the Siege of Dragonspear and patch 2.0 launches, though instead of SoD I played BG2 again first... twice. I thought about starting a brand new play of BG1 as well but I think I'll just import my most recent Final-Save file and dive into Siege from there.

I've been kicking around the idea of doing video reviews for computer RPGs for awhile now, and I think I may start with these games, since I've had so much time with them recently... but on the other hand it might be odd to be covering such a pinnacle of the genre right out of the gates. Part of me feels like I should start off with something a bit more modest.

Grandia!

I played and beat the Saturn version a million years ago, and have attempted to go through the Playstation version a handful of times. I always lose my reserve about half way in. The voices are just soo bad.
But I'm going to do it this time. I really, really love this game. It's the kind of JRPG I like to play. Bright, cheerful, and the main character is excited to explore the world- not because there's some impending doom that's going to kill everything- but because it's there to explore. I like the little touches like pressing x next to household items to make them move, the tons of lines of dialog - you should never only speak to an NPC once, and how the developers wanted to make full use of a 3D world. If you aren't spinning the camera around, you're going to miss something.
I'm only a couple hours in; I just finished the mine quest to get the steampass from the old dude. The mine cart exit had me smiling. As I watched it unfold it made me think that a modern game would ruin it with stupid QTEs of jumping tracks and garbage like that.
I feel like this is the perfect followup to DQIII.
But these voices...

That sounds fun! I've played Grandia 2 a couple of times but never the first.

and I didnt even get into the combat, which is splendid (which you already know, having played G2). I love ruining enemies' day by countering them just as they're going to attack. Also love No Random Encounters! Also love that underpowered dudes will run from you so you dont have to bother with them!
One of the reasons I liked TitS so much was that it felt very much like an extension of this game.

There's an undub of Grandia floating around out there...

Someone got me Samurai Warriors 2 Empires for the 360 a number of gift exchanges ago, and I'm just getting around to playing it. Somehow it is even more repetitive grinding than your average Dynasty Warriors game, and that's saying something. I'm still going to finish it, because I'm stubborn.

Overwatch is starting to get serious hooks into my friends and I. We had a full team last night and it was the most fun I had with an FPS since the Battlefield 2 glory days. It finally kills TF2 for me.

Brutal Doom is so great, it's probably my favorite FPS. Try out one of the metal music packs of you haven't already, it goes nicely with the Brutal mod.

Is there a way to play the maps from the PS1 Doom games with Brutal Doom?

If someone made a wad of the PS1 levels you can. Brutal Doom can be applied to any Doom WAD, although sometimes you get hilarious results.

I'll have to dig out the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wad.

I just started playing this, and I'm already showing 31 hours on the play clock. Only about 4 hours of that is idle time. I'm really hooked. I've gotta say, I remember there being far more spoken dialogue than there really is. There's a bunch up front, but as soon as you leave the starting hub, it's fairly sparse until you hit the first major plot point, and then there's nothing for the next 8 hours of play.
Paul just came to frog town, and I'm still enthralled. The only thing that I feel is sorta inadequate gameplay wise is how magic only improves the more you use it. The spells often only do half as much damage as my melee, so I've not been using them much. But now I'm worried that might screw me towards the end. Prolly not, because I dont remember hitting a wall in the saturn version...but just in case I'm trying to use them more. Makes the battles longer and less fun though. :(
Ah well, back to it!

Well, the Babel section in Catherine is impossible, as is the Rapunzel video game. Those achievements will never be mine.

I remember being massively overpowered and avoiding every battle I possibly could by the end. I don't think I used much magic or went out of my way to grind, either.

I'm definitely not grinding. But every once in a while RPGs will throw you a curveball where physical doesn't hurt (sorta met that in the Dom Ruins with the ghosts until there was a specific weapon drop that helped out). So I don't want to be left with crappy lvl 1 spells.
The last boss I faced was the volcano dragon and the most he did was hit a couple characters for 1/4 life. Game is way too easy.

Yeah, it's a problem. I loved the game, but was eager for it to be over after hours of feckless enemies kamikaze-ing me as I trudged across some of those final (huge) maps. That's what's kept me from ever replaying.

Onto disc two!

Even now the dungeon maps are annoyingly huge. The many turn arounds and dead ends combined with everything looking the same makes exploration quite a chore. I'm not cheating with this one, so I know I'm missing stuff. Feena has been using the same whip for like 5 dungeons now. She does half the damage of Justin if I'm lucky.

I reached a certain point and it all came flooding back. I recall why I stopped playing.
Unbeatable boss? No.
Perma-missable item? No.
Crazy confusing dungeon? No.
Stupid story twist? No.

No, it was none of those things.
The thing that made me stop playing a game I thoroughly enjoyed playing up that point, the thing that made this game seem to be filled to the brim with bad voice acting when there really isn't much voice at all (at least compared to other CD games of the time), I've finally come to it and like a flash of lightning it all instantly came back.

I can't really say the woman in that video is particularly worse than the other horrible voices. However, the complete disconnect between the grunts of pain and dude falling from the sky is entertaining in its own right.

Jesus, I'd forgotten how horrible that dub was.

Played massive chalice for about eight hours. There are a lot of really good ideas here that are ripped out of other games like X-Com and FTL. I really like watching the generations grow and then get replaced. I just feel like there isn't quite enough here. Not enough enemy variety, map variety, not enough buildings, not enough time with each group of heroes, not enough events per time passing....like the game could have been designed for a 40-50 hour playthrough and it would have allowed for a lot more stuff to happen with each group, but the battles themselves are very straightforward and kind of boring.

The relics are frustrating also. I keep reassigning them on death and then they disappear even while the bloodlines are intact. I don't really get what's happening there.

It's just like...each group of heroes gets on average 1.8 fights for me right now. I am getting them up the tree because of crucibles, but like....it's kinda lame because you never really get attached? The FTL-like events are also too far between and have huge ramifications since everything takes so damn long, and if you end up losing some key people before your next batch is of age it can really be annoying.

Annoying is the thing though, because the battles just aren't that bad. Doesn't really matter what unit comp you are going with...if you play carefully they are all pretty easy.

I dunno. The game has everything I like but not quite enough of any of it. The only thing that would make it better is more of everything, I think.
