Yeah, it's crazy to say this gen sucks. There are more and better versions of everything, and a near infinite supply of niche titles to scratch the very specific itch anyone might have. If it doesn't feel like the best time to be playing videogames, it's probably just because we're old enough to know there's a ton of things that are more important.
There are more great games this gen then I will ever play. My backlog is hilarious at this point.
It's just weird that it's already kind of done.
I love the games and artistic interpretations I'm seeing in some of this footage. Lots of neato indy stuff I have no idea how to get. I remember the time when every game came out was basically a FPS (around Halo and Halo 2) or racing game (obviously not everything). Much much more variety and creativity with platforms opening up to indies and welcoming creativity.
As someone who bought my Xbone last year I don't know if I would purchase a new system. The tech is moving to dive headfirst in to VR but personally I doubt I'd ever buy a system for that. It's a novel concept that I have zero interest in. Playing Smash Bros or Street Fighter with people on the couch next to me is about the level of social activity I enjoy most in gaming. VR isn't for me.
What a self-fulfilling prophecy that is. When the most over-exposed publisher essentially only shows one game, what else could possibly be at the top? 3/4 of game "journalists" are Jeremy Parish clones who are ignorant of most of gaming history, but they can all spout Nintendo revisionist history, which makes Zelda comfortable for them.
Maybe this point of view depends on what genre(s) you prefer, but I certainly can't get my head around a generation headlined by...
The Witcher III
Uncharted 4
Bloodborne
Super Mario 3D World
Dark Souls III
Fallout 4
Doom
Rocket League
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Forza Horizon 2
Hitman
Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours
...sucking. And I don't think improved versions of older games is all bad. The second half of last gen was full of developers trying to shoehorn in games that the hardware couldn't handle. The Last of Us is perhaps the prime example. Those games getting to spread their wings is pretty hard to characterize as bad.
How so? Scorpio is ~18 months away, and Neo hasn't even been officially announced. NX has been, but its name hasn't, and it hasn't been shown.
edit: I'm actually pretty happy the concept of "generations" appears to be on its way out. Anyone who has ever claimed to want backward compatibility in their consoles should be too.
Not good enough. I want sideways compatibility.
Anyhoo, I was quite surprised to read articles opining that MS won the e3 conference battle.
I really thought Sony had a better showing, and Nintendo showed the best single title.
Nintendo looking to recapture Wii gamers with the NX. Ubisoft looking to address the family market on the console.
Joy.
Wash, rinse, repeat. Way to go Nintendon't!
I couldn't get into Witcher III, I bought it, I've played a few hours. Uncharted 4, Doom, Rocket League RoTR and FH2 are all fantastic. All are also sequels aside from Rocket League. By this time we had shit like Dead Rising, Tokyo Jungle, etc. RL is the only thing close to it, but even that is just a repurposed SABSR or whatever the acronym is.
If I had to pick between the two, Sony won. MS didn't really wow me this time around. No huge announcement like BC last year. Sony only won for me because VR looks rad as shit.
