What Are You Playing? (Winter 2017)

I guess if Yoshi isn't around somebody needs to make the thread...

Anyway, with the release of Shantae Half Genie Hero I figured it's about time for me to actually play these games since I've had Risky's Revenge and The Pirate's Curse for quite some time unplayed. I ran through Risky's Revenge on PS4 this past week and it's a fantastic little game. It's just the right length to be fun without overstaying its welcome.

I started Pirate's Curse last night and it does what a sequel should: takes the basic gameplay of the previous game and improves it in most every way. I'm only an hour in and I think I'm going to love this game.

Where's Yoshi?

I'm still on my fall/winter trio of Heroes of the Storm, Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 but Heroes has taken most of my time. This is the first moba to hold my attention since I feel that it gets so much right. If anyone here has ever wanted to try it, I'll play anytime.

Jamestown: Bought a PS4 Pro and rebought this game. Feeling the groove again. Fun times with the PS4 controller!

Bloodborne: If you liked doing SL1 runs in Dark Souls and parrying/riposting everything in sight, this is definitely your game. This game is at its best when it strays from the DS formula and makes levels irrelevant and relies on pure gameplay and atmosphere. I got bored with it for a while when I was stuck in the Forbidden Woods but then I got kidnapped all of a sudden and it was like a whole new game!

SMT IV: Apocalypse: If you haven't played SMT IV yet, play this instead. It's much more lively and fun. Not that SMT IV is bad -- I love it -- but this is easier to jump into (and easier, period). Mara (the penis demon) just made his first appearance!

Jamestown is awesome.

FFXV: I love this game so much. There's so much that's wrong or just finicky with it (bad target selection, a lot of trading hits through special attacks that should have iframes, awkward poses, poorly edited flashbacks, etc.) but it's so much more than the sum of its parts. The smooth transition of coming into a story in progress which then has the characters running away feels better executed than most every other JRPG ever which has the main character kicked out of his hometown, and all the little silly details really make the setting. On one hand I'd call the terrible photos the most useless game addition in a long time, but it really helps sell the idea that these guys are buddies roadtripping around more than anything else. I love the high fives after team up attacks and the way they all screw around in the car while driving.

Legend of Legacy: ARBM mentioning this reminded me I never got very far in this despite enjoying it, so I'm back at it and grinding away before I crack open 7th Dragon. Such a cute little game, I really like the way HP is automatically refilled after every battle, but there seems to be a huge amount of attacks missing all the time.

Pony Island: Saw this mentioned in NeoZeed's completion list and gave it a shot since it was like $1 during the sale. I can't tell if some aspects are meant to be a joke or are just overly heavy handed, but I think they did a great job with most of the meta elements. At least, until the game actually broke and began running at like 1% speed. Seems pretty short so I should be done with it soon.

If it had direct control I'd play it a bunch, I really like the game but I don't care for click-to-move. Would love a console release for this.

Been playing Final Fantasy 6 Advance on my micro in bits and pieces. Never finished it on the SNES, only rented it and had to return it around the World of Ruin.

Maybe it's the weapon(s)? The big weapons like broadswords and axes miss often. Skills themselves have varying hit rates, too. Moreover, characters have specific weapon proficiencies, though those may only pertain to the skill AWAKENing multipliers and not to hit percentage. But who knows! All of these stats are buried and the game never tells you anything; not about the battle fast-forwarding I didn't use for the first dozen hours or about commissioning the ships or Singing Shards retaining skills or orororororoeoor. Some of that stuff was fun to discover, though.

The one pro tip I have is to use the Air Contract every battle. It replenishes a LOT of MP each turn: like 3-5. That way you can use your good skills all the time without fear of MP depletion.

Also, which element is the most prominent on the battle field makes a huge difference. I think Air halves charm skills, Water halves weapon skills, and Fire doubles all damage.

That would be a good move by Blizzard. Diablo and Overwatch both do well. Heroes would translate great. The FTP model as well as the gold unlocking system would be a good fit.

Could be. I had Garnet as a tank, Owen as my main with a broadsword, and Filmia with a spear so almost every round was: Garnet blocks all physical incoming attacks, Filmia gets hit with air and gets stunned, and Owen swings and misses. I guess I'm a little stubborn there because I've unlocked at least one skill for every weapon type I have so far except the broadsword.

I picked up Trackmania Turbo PS4 during the sale earlier this week.

Holy shit, where has this game been all my life? I love it. I didn't think I'd really like the 40 second stunt trial thing as opposed to real racing, but I think I'm addicted now. Finally getting gold on a track you've been doing over and over is the best feeling.

Trackmania games are terrific. They remind me of when I used to race Bowser Castle 1 over and over to improve my time.

I'm still playing Sins of a Solar Empire (PC). I'm currently playing on the large map and 4 of my opponents have been defeated. I have my fleet at near the maximum, but I haven't expanded my empire beyond on solar system.

I've been playing Battlefield 1 (online) on the PS4. I'm currently at level 8, which is pretty pitiful, considering how long I've had this game, but I'm getting a lot better at it.

I've also been playing Fallout: New Vegas on the PS3. I had a recent failure of my PS3, but with a replacement power supply I'm back in action.

Got the Android Chrono Trigger on sale for $5 and played it on the drive home. Finished the fair, the woods, rescuing Marle at the cathedral, the trial, the jailbreak, the first dungeon in the future, and beat Johnny in the race. Clock time? Two hours, thirty-seven minutes. The pace at which this game moves is wonderful.

The port is perfunctory. I'd kill for a touch interface that lets you poke the enemy you want to attack with your finger FFIII DS (best battle interface of all time) style. It has some minor sound inaccuracies, though so does the DS port. The jarring contrast of HD text over low res sprites cements the superiority of DS version, but this is a nice little port for five bucks.

Just saw this get a mention and gave it a download.

48MB, free, works without switching to Japanese locale. Arrow keys and ASZX are your default inputs. Seems to have potential as something good. I'll need to find some time to play it to see for myself.

Seems to be an ARPG of some sort. The title translates to "Box Garden Explorer".

Yeah, the PC Master Race that has long been the only audience to give a fuck about Trackmania turned on this game for not having mod support and requiring UPlay, and it just got buried. It's a shame because it's a very good game.

Watching Nintendo's thing Thursday night made me want to play a Mario thing, so I'm playing Super Mario 3D World because I can do that now. Not as good as Galaxy 2, but still pretty great. I kind of like this direction more than the 64/Sunshine approach.

I've been playing 3D World with my daughter as well, she loves it. She's mostly just running around while I do all the work though.

I hooked my Saturn up to do the Pro Action Replay hack for a friend and somehow started playing Daytona Circuit Edition again. I got in the zone and got first place in every race, awwww yeah.

It is and it's wonderful

Hearthstone - I have a big enough card pool now that I can make interesting decks, which is good, but the meta of pirate aggro or reno control is so boring, which is bad.

Destiny (ps4) - Still fun to play, lot of different 400 Light loadouts now, and I just got the new Icebreaker. Shelved until the next Iron Banner, though.

Guilty Gear Revelator (ps4) - I mostly practice Ramlethal, excited for Baiken, might bite on Dizzy. It would be cool if there was a TNL night, Anthony says the netcode (at least on PC) is quite good.

Alien Isolation would have been perfect if it wasn't so padded to add game time. I can barely even think about replaying it some day.

I've heard the last third is a slog, but for now it's one of the best experiences I've had with games in years.

The sound design is perhaps better than any I've been exposed to.

I've been playing Alien Isolation again. I'm finding that the PS4 version feels somewhat buggier than the PS3 rev (which I nearly finished). Some of the NPC stuff is a lot tighter on the PS3 version for some reason, or maybe I'm just noticing more now that I've had a year of distance on it. On the upside, it doesn't choke to death every time a scripted ingame sequence starts.

Stardew Valley is some addictive shit, I recommend avoiding it if you have things to do.

Divinity: Original Sin is some cringey purple prose mixed in with a pretty alright turn based Diablo-y thing.

Divinity: OS sounds awesome, but I can't stand dialogue trees. Is the dialogue largely skippable as it is in Diablo or will I have to interact with people beyond punching them?

I think there's an option to auto-pick, there definitely is for the 'partner' dialog.

I started playing Dragon Warrior 4 NES.
I fucking hate the localizations on the DS games, man.

The DS game is great, but the NES one is better.

Nights of Azure - Just like dog$ said, it's a pretty mediocre game, but it's scratching that B level Japanese action RPG itch that I've been having for a new console game. Not much to write about, it's just a standard 3D beat 'em up with summoning monster allies to tag along.

Muramasa Rebirth - Been meaning to finally clear this at least once before deleting it, but the gameplay is just so sloppy and the levels are so empty with way too much traveling for no reason that it's just a slog. I don't think I'm going to make it. But it sure is a beautiful game, especially the food bowls and the progressive eating.

Dragon's Crown - They learned so many lessons from Muramasa and made DC just shit all over that game so hard it's not even funny. Going back to this one since I never really finished it either is probably what's going to tip me over the edge to not finishingo Muramasa; tightly packed levels with very little fluff and enemies in every room, worthwhile secrets, animation cancelling, and a weapons grind that feels more natural and worthwhile. There's even still people playing online, which I was hoping for but wasn't expecting to be real.

With the remake Odin Sphere Leifthrasir waiting for me to finish up at least one of the latter two titles, it's kind of nice seeing Vanillaware slowly turn into a development company making titles worth playing. Makes me look forward to 13 Sentinels.

I've been wanting to clear out some of my Wii U backlog and I finally popped in Captain Toad. This game is magnificent, it's like a modern interpretation of the old single screen puzzle platformers. I love it.

If anyone is a fan of Diablo 1, and has Reaper of Souls on PC, there's a 20th anniversary event going on now. Make a level 1 character and run through a mini-Diablo 1 dungeon. It has a bunch of fun throwbacks, I really enjoyed it.

I think it's only up until the end of the month, so if you want to play it you have to do it quick.

Captain Toad is pretty fucking awesome, my GF and I had a damn good time playing through that together.

Day of the Tentacle is free on PSN right now, it's still a blast.

Finished Shantae: Half Genie Hero and it's my favorite Wayforward thing this side of Contra 4. Also playing Dark Souls 3 until I finally finish that nonsense.

Alien: Isolation is the best recreation of a movie experience in game form I have ever played. Right down to pulling out the self-destruct tubes at the end.

I'm playing Super Ghouls N' Ghosts on 3DS Virtual Console. Volgarr put me in a mood to play this. I never played through it as a kid -- I always preferred GnG on Genesis because it was a near-perfect arcade port -- but this is clearly the better game. Such impeccable design and risk v. reward gameplay. Playing it makes me appreciate Volgarr all the more.

FFXV, Diablo 3, Hearth Stone and Dota 2

Exist Archive. I read mixed review on this Tri-Ace game, and so far I am enjoying it. It has an interesting premise (main characters "died" in the beginning and got sucked into another dimension). Combat is fun with some tricky timing for combos. Dungeons are side-scrolling unlike trading JRPGs. Graphics/sound/music are fantastic.

I was playing Rogue Leader last night after hooking up the Gamecube. This game still looks really fucking good and is a blast, I was a little shocked.

It was no mere hyperbole that that game looked better than most games that came out long after it, and ones that came out on the following hardware.

That was a good game, too bad the sequel took a dump with those on foot sections.

That game is a god damn marvel. I used to know a dude who worked at Factor 5, I think he was a modeler, any way that game was made in 8 months and averaged 12 - 16 million polys a second.

I played quite a bit of PONY ISLAND one night. I should probably finish it, it's cool.

OWLBOY is rad, and I should finish that too. Methinks I'm about halfway, maybe more. Just beautiful. Not quite as thrilling as something like Undertale, but damn, damn, damn well done.

Soukyugurentai (ST-V)
No difference from the Saturn one. Quite a bit better than RayStorm, which IMO took its own series into 3D a bit too early. The pre-renders here look better than RS's PS1 graphics and Hitoshi Sakimoto's ST here is simply epic. This seriously needs a Ver. 2017 for the PS4 to follow up Battle Garegga.

I love me some Souky, although I'm not very good at it.

Danganronpa - It's okay so far, but I feel like they were trying way too hard to make each character unique and the UI was designed a group of drunk people. L and R pans the screen inside rooms but strafes in hallways and the touch screen is disabled in hallways but I can use either that or the analog stick with X in rooms.

It's not anywhere near as charming as Phoenix Wright so I'm just trying to power through a bit to see if it hooks me in any way (and I already got the sequel as a present as well, so I feel obligated to at least get through and start that one). I do think the 3D environments with cardboard cutout people and items is pretty cute.

Between DangitGranpa 1 and 2 there's one really good visual novel but you have to suffer through a bad video game with a few really boring chapters to get to it. It's worth it though.

I think Jamestown is a modern-day Soukyugurentai in a lot of ways. Some elements of Mars Matrix and Giga Wing 2 as well. Jamestown level 2 feels like a tribute to Souky's level 3.

I'd never made that comparison, but I do love Jamestown too.

The game's been dull so far but the opening music was awesome as promised.

It's been awhile, so I decided to play the STARTREK TNG table on Pinball Arcade (PS4). I finished all of the missions and the Final Frontier Mission opened up. It a 5 ball multi-ball bonus level with all kinds of scoring options. It was cool if I could see the table. The game decided to change the viewing angle below the clippers, and I could only see the balls when they were about to hit the flippers. I frantically tried to change the viewing angle, and by the time I got it right, I was down to 2 balls on the table. I finished the game with 8,558,659,440 points and my score is 2923rd in the world against mobile PC and PS4 gamers. I'll see if I can get 100 billion on this.

Started playing Gravity Rush. I like it so far, but I maid the mistake of choosing a certain side mission as soon it was open. I haven't finished it yet, but that mission is tedious!

I didn't realize there was a GBA Fire Emblem game left in Japan, and that the first one we got was actually a prequel. That's my favorite FE game, so I have to play it.

Okay so it plays identically to Fire Emblem, but they fixed a few things in the later game. Namely, the difficulty of the stages is pretty easy, but the bosses are fucking hard. I can still beat them, but you have to rely on your one or two overpowered guys that you normally hold back since they are EXP sponges, and nobody else can even hit the boss. Other than that, having a grand ol time.

Double Dragon IV (PC)
One good thing is that it can have several enemies on the screen at a time- around 5 or 6. The BGM isn't bad. It plays well and looks like a proper sequel to... the NES version. I still like it, but would rather have had 16-bit graphics like PC-Engine DD2, GBA's DD Advance, or SNES' Super Double Dragon. Large sprites and detailed backgrounds like the ones from the Neo-Geo fighter would've been best. Good for $7 but I'd have been willing to pay $20 to get Neo Geo graphics. Character combat voices would've been nice, even if they were just ripped from DDA.

Divinity Original Sin - I really like this game. The world is very detailed and points back to old games like Ultima VII (which they talked about a lot before release). The combat is a lot of fun - it's turn based and unlike Pillars of Eternity you can actually figure out what the fuck is going on and plan a strategy. The elemental stuff is like Magicka in a real RPG. The story and dialogue are kind of dumb but there is a lot of it, which maybe sounds less complimentary than it is supposed to be. There's a lot of fun ways the characters interact.

The only problem is the game is a bit too much like old titles in some ways. Inventory management is a nightmare. Having to juggle shit between guys is a pain in the ass (why not automatically have the best, say, crafter handle all crafting automatically?). Hunting down some random NPC on a map can be frustrating. The quest logs are vague and you end up spending a lot of time poking around (or, more likely, looking at a walkthrough on the phone). Despite that it's a cool game and I recommend it.

Divinity's battle system looks delightful, but I've kept my distance because of all the other stuff you mentioned. I want all of that battle complexity and terrain interaction and up-leveling of dudes, but I don't want to have to talk to anyone or do anything between. I just want to punch and shoot things. The only thing I want to do between punching and shooting is plan how best to punch and shoot the next things.

Katamari Forever - I'm terrible at this game now. Just awful.

Reinstalled Dark Souls 3 to get a little stronger in preparation for the last DLC. Loaded it up and realized I forgot to back up my save when I formatted a few months ago. I only played the one character since release, so ~140 hours down the drain. Not sure if or when I'll get the DLC, in that case. Really seriously bummed about it.

So I've been playing Isaac, SFV and I finally started DOOM.

Doesn't the PS4 save everything online like Xbox one? I can buy a new Xbox and all my saves are back just by signing in my gamer tag.

It does, to a certain extent (I filled my online save space a long time ago). But I'm playing it on PC, and I swear I should have a backup somewhere from a time right before I got 100%. Can't find it, though.

Yea. I would buy an Iceland Dale-style Divinity with this combat system in a second.

But it is fun at least in the beginning to explore and talk and open up quests. It's just sometimes it becomes a drag.

Trials Fusion. This is equally hair-pullingly frustrating, and orgasmic delight.

FFXIV - Started this up again in anticipation of the upcoming xpac, still can't pick a main to save my life. I still love how this game feels.

Tree of Savior - Felt like something cute and online so I made another character. Unfortunately I made the mistake of going support this time which means I have a long, painful grind of being a healing class trying to kill everything until I can unlock any real damage abilities. I wish there were more bright color areas and less brown sections, even though the art style overall is still so nice.

Mario Kart 8 - Received a copy for my birthday to play with my girl, it's okay. Is there a way to do team games? Feels like there should be.

Overwatch - Went back to try a few rounds so I can at least get the Wukong and Trip skins, holy fuck am I terrible now. All that I have learned has apparently gone away. Sad Christmas.

Riddled Corpses - Fun, but I will never beat it. I've beaten level 5 but I'm too drained by the time I get to the last area that it is a no go. I really wish it had online 2 player so someone could help me knock this out.

The waifu and I were playing Rock Band and we picked Smash Mouth. I found the idea of a band playing "Walking on the Sun" in some grungy hipster club to be so hilarious I couldn't finish the song. GOTY

Earth Defense Force 4.1 - Kind of remixed version of 2025, but it has some new levels and features. Flashlights in the tunnels make those levels much more thrilling, and operating a giant mech against a Kaiju is pretty cool (though limited). Great game for $20 that fans should definitely pick up.

TLoZ Twilight Princess HD - Never really played the game past the first dungeon before. Remember playing it on GC and hating the fishing in the first area. Played it on Wii a little, didn't get far. This HD release though, finished the whole thing in two weeks, what a fucking great game.

Halo Master Chief Collection / Halo 5 - Just got an Xbone and after messing with Halo 5 for a while I think I'm gonna go through all five games in order. About half way through Halo CE.

Castlevania SoTN - While looking at my ready to download list on the aformentioned Xbox One I saw SoTN and couldn't resist. I'm about half way through a run of the not upside down castle. Fuck this game is a masterpeice.

I have started both Sunset Overdrive and Gravity Rush 2 but they're on haitus until I get Halo out of my system.

My wife is playing Viva Pinata a lot. When we first dated she played the original agressively after I showed it to her. Now she's playing the fuck out of both on Rare Replay and has no joke put in like 20 hours between the two this week. Over the last 7 years of being together she's played a grand total of zero minutes of any other games. I don't get it.

I just beat the final stage in Gravity Rush. I enjoyed it quite a bit. That maid mission was much less tedious the second time around (helps that I got more sleep before going back to it) and the second part was much more fun.

I'm still stalled out on Dragon Quest VII.
I stalled out on Final Fantasy XV when they announced there'd be fixes and additions. I've not been paying attention to it though, have they been released?
I started playing Kotor II on my GPD Win. I was having issues with getting a black screen after the cut scenes. Thought it may be the system I'm playing on. Nope, just good old Obsidian programming at work. I installed the Restored Content Mod. First time I've ever done a mod! Haven't had an issue since.
Unlike Kotor 1 (which I've played through a dozen times), I've only ever played this one once. The bugs, overly talkiness, and unfulfilling second half left me unfulfilled.

Anyway, while I still fell like there's way too much standing around and reading through dialog trees, I'm finding I sure as shit missed a bunch of stuff the first time through. I remember being upset that I never finished HK-47, which I did this time by the second planet. I don't remember recruiting Disciple (to be honest, I don't even remember meeting him, but I guess I must have). I also don't think I got Atton to turn into a jedi. Again, if it had to have happened automatically because of the story, I sure as heck don't remember it. Does the Darth Maul looking dude also become a jedi? It certainly seems like everyone I meet is going to now.

There have been two events that came out last month and a few patches have come out since launch, so that depends on which ones you're looking for. Personally I'm not really that excited for the alternate viewpoints because they'll deviate from the fairly unique Noctis-only storytelling that I felt worked so excellently in the main game (I'd almost even like the Lunafreya sections omitted for the same reason).

I never did try out the KOTOR2 content mod. One day.

Started playing Tales of Berseria. Only about 5 hours in I already know it'll be much better than Zesteria.

Crysis 3 (PC) - On the last mission at Post-Human difficulty.
Alien vs. Predator (AC) - Finished game with only 2 continues, trying for 1CC later.
Mass Effect 3 (PC) - Getting closer to the end. 89 hours in, including some DLC.
Soukyugurentai (AC) - Deliberately avoiding the "P" (weapon powerup) items to try for more bombs and keep the rank down. Letting some enemies survive helps with the latter as well. My favorite of all the Raizing games, even over Garegga.
Sims 4 (PC) - Good for something different.

Bleed 2.

Holy lord God, this game rules. Feels like Gunstar Heroes with a parry mechanic meets Astroboy GBA with a slowdown mechanic. The controls take some getting used to (RT is jump. Seems gross at first, but within five minutes you'll see why RT must be jump), but once it clicks, oh man.

Seems like a game Tain would like, which is maybe the highest order of praise a game can receive.

Shantae Half Genie Hero, I'm like a little ways past the halfway mark here. It's mostly fun but they seem to love to throw in a level here and there that is so damn frustrating and just goes on for too damn long. Overall though its really well done.

Pretty much at the 3/4ths mark of Stardew Valley, it continues to be a really pleasant game to unwind with.

Does that game merely emulate harvest moon or does it improve it?
HM is a series I've tried several times to get into, but lose interest in rather quickly.
