I finally got around to spending my $50 GameStop gift card I got for my birthday. I ended up getting the Last Guardian, because it looks like it might become a hard to find game soon. I also picked up the HOTD 2&3 for the Wii; my light guns for the DC never worked right, so it'll be cool to finally be able to play 2 right.

Yeah the Retron controller is awful but you can use the real controllers so it's irrelevant. I've been rocking the Retro Freak which isn't that much different.

In the Freak (and I believe both of these use the same emulators underneath) the SNES emu has a bit of lag, there's a definite difference between it and a SNES Classic or a real system. The NES emu is a bit better and the Genesis one is fantastic.Quote:

No, but you can load roms onto a microSD card and it will recognize them with no fuss or hackery involved.

Picked up a couple of SNES controllers with USB connections for the PC so that I can play LTTP randomizers with Cow. These things feel and work perfect, $12 for a pair off Amazon.

A bunch of functional repair parts for my arcade machines. Sticks, power supply, track ball bearings, mictoswitches.
What is everyone's preferences on arcade controls? I'm replacing the mvs sticks with happ competition sticks because that is very close to what was originally in it. But I understand that competitive players might want better if I turn it back into a fight man's cab?

I've heard that the IL Eurostick is much better than the current production of Happ sticks. Supposedly this is the company that was making the sticks for Happ for years, and when Happ was bought by Suzo they move production to China. People say the newer Happ Competition sticks are not as good as the old ones, and that they're more cheaply made and feel off. the IL Eurosticks are supposed to be exactly the same as the old Happ Competition sticks and are the ones everyone goes for, for that style of stick. I plan on buying an IL Eurostick for my Pelican Real Arcade Universal arcade stick, since its got a cheap knock off happ in it now. For my Mayflash F300 I put a Sanwa stick in it, and I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Happ all the way for US games, especially.
IL is better than Happ if you can find them, but you can't beat Happ on price.
The problem with Happ is that they use unprotected microswitches, and the actuator wears them down to the point that you can't hit diagonals. You can swap them with the button microswitches at that point since the nubby switches work fine in buttons, but the real solution is to use switches that have the little metal lever protecting the plastic bit.
You need a high tension stick like the Happ to do bounce teleport(smack the stick down and let the rebound hit the up direction for you) with Raiden and Kung Lao. Sanwa sticks are not capable of that, at least not with the stock spring.Quote:

American parts are just tougher and easier to service. The buttons and sticks use the same microswitches, and you can change one switch at a time on sticks. I would definitely go for the convex competition buttons instead of the convex standard ones. You don't need the grime cavity.
Also, anything with leaf switches can go straight into the trash.

From a guy on Facebook got Dark Souls Black Armor Ed, Witch and the Hundred Knight LE, and a Vita slim for $50. I really never followed the Vita redesign, it seems a nice revision without feeling cheap like the 3DS revisions.
From a guy on Craig’s that I got Sega CD games from a few months back I got Iron Storm and Dragon Force. Ended up selling Iron Storm as it wasn’t my thing. Dragon Force is one of the games I regretted selling when I purged my collection 10 years ago. There’s something about the battle theme kicking in as the camera pans across your army.
Iron Storm was awesome. It's a shame you got rid of it.

In the past month I've found a working thinkpad, a really old macbook that just needs the OS re-installed, and an HP laptop that works, but has a dead battery, dead cmos battery, and busted wi-fi. I just fix them up and give them to people at work because I have no use for them, but I hate to see working stuff end up in the trash.

yeah i wish we had other thrifts out here more, our goodwills literally don't even carry PS2 or PC games with their CD's like they used to. it's a whole lotta nothing out here.
I find nothing but hot garbage (sports games) at thrift stores. Seeing a loose Sonic 1 with ripped labels for $10 is like the holy grail as all the thrift stores have either put stuff online or price at ebay listings.
Our record stores get most of the good shit over here, Amoeba Records and Rasputin Music tend to get some rad stuff, to the point of carrying vinyl game soundtracks used.
I dropped by a Goodwill on the North side of McAllen Texas. There was a fat old man sitting at the front of the store with a 20" vcr/tv combo. The front of the store had one little shelf with a bunch of VHS tapes, CDs and old ass DVD movies. There was also an HD DVD of Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible. There was 2 milk crates full of really bad records sitting below that shelf. The rest of the store had a bunch of crappy kids toys and racks full of clothes.
Same old shit, different city.
I have a couple goodwills relatively nearby that I would stop by after work or something similar for awhile. Never found shit. I've only managed one lucky find on letgo so far and that was a really nice boxed colecovision, with a bunch of games, the turbo controller, an atari 5200 and some games all for 75 bucks. That's the only deal I've ever managed on any of that kind of stuff.
Thrift stores have become a wasteland. There’s one Goodwill about 30 miles away that I’ve had good luck at, try to stop by anytime I’m in the area. I stopped by the local GW about a few weeks back (first time I stepped foot in 6 months) and ran across steelbook Prime Trilogy and The Last Story. No games inside. Ask the woman up front if they have the games behind the counter. Nope, she snags the games, says they were probably stolen and throws them in the trash. I offered her the $3 apiece marked on them give the manuals and cases were in great shape. She doggedly refused to sell them, said it was the policy. I’m at a loss for the logic here, but wasn’t going to waste time arguing the bottom step of the retail world.
I ordered one a'them black Super NT minis on a drunken lark. I actually bought the black 8bitdo controller the week before, so it was a quick leap onto the justification train from there when orders opened back up.

Thrift stores around here wont accept pcs because of potential security issues. Lord knows what the right (meaning wrong) person can pull from your old hard drive.

I'd visited a couple of mom and pop thrift stores in McAllen Texas, after being disappointed with their local Goodwill. The 1st shop called B&N thrift had absolutely nothing but an old PlayStation version of Madden mixed in with some CDs and I stumble upon a Red Dead Revolver for the PS2. I opened up the case and discovered that it had GTA Vice City inside of it. I went to a second store called Texas Thrift. They had a lot of old sports games, some DJ Hero turn tables and a 32" (black) Sony Trinitron. There was also PSP UMDs ($5) and a couple of PSP games ($10) behind the glass case in the front of the store. Really, the best place to go that's like a thrift shop is the pawn shops. I've seen much better selections and prices than these thrift stores have been offering lately.Quote:

Stopped in the thrift store near me a couple days ago. Wasn't having any luck until I started looking through the board games/puzzles. Found a complete PC original big box copy of Deus Ex for $1.97, box is near perfect and it has every single insert.
That was my first half decent find there in about a year.
Grabbed Injustice 2 Ultimate on PSN Flash Sale. I've really been itching to get at this, but wasn't about to pay full price for a game with a character pass.
I am on a NES kick lately, I picked up Super C and Defender of the Crown. Super C was pretty tough on the NES mini mostly due to lag, I have no problem getting to stage 4 with an actual system hooked up to a CRT.
Defender of the Crown was one of my favorites back in the day. The strategy/gameplay is relatively simple and I remember conquering with everyone easily. Years have not been kind to my skills though, as I got wiped out early and often.
