I had a bad ass Fisher 4 head stereo VHS player. Movies looked and sounded great on it. I've never owned another VCR that had that kind of AV quality.

I spent a few hours trying to find the "top of the line" dvd players circa 2007 or so when they were trying to compete with Bluray and HD DVD.
Not an easy thing to do. Google kept spitting back useless results.

See if there's an archive of Best Buy or department store ads from the time.

I'd bought one of those crappy Cybertronics upscaling DVD players back in 2005, when I'd bought my 32" Sony HD CRT. It could do 1080i, but it would stretch 4:3 stuff pretty bad. I ran it @480p instead. That pos died 2 years later.

My 1st DVD player wouldn't play newer movies, or support progressive scan.

I was actually trying to research what the best standalone DVD player would be either for upscaling or for spitting out 480i component and feeding it to my DVDO, and other than some hideously expensive Oppo and Pioneer elite players I never found anything definitive. So fuck it, I'll keep using the bluray player and it's oversharpened DVD upscaling.

More than likely, other than build quality a current $30 dvd player probably trumps a $1000 player from yesteryear.

That didn't happen with VCRs. I'd say the quality got worse, even with the 6 head models.

Sony studio quality DVD players are probably the best option.

The manufacturers were trying to sell you on the new shit, so I figure the peak is going to be about a year before Blu-ray premiered. I don't expect they really gave a fuck about competing with Blu-ray or HD DVD if 'they' were trying to sell the decks themselves.

Yeah but VCRs are way more complicated than DVD players. The main quality difference in DVD players really just boils down to digital to analog conversion and scaling/deinterlacing. Current bluray players are even more basic, they can simply be transports to send digital information to audio/video devices.

I think that that most of the DVD players coming out in 2005 were hot garbage. It was a race to produce a player for under $50. The high end was winding it down in preparation for HD DVD and BR.
