I noticed some John Woo movies I wanted to replace/upgrade are out of print along with the old gangster movies or old movies period. The stuff I bought are all DVD.
How long are DVDs designed to last? Are we suppose to rip these if we want to keep them another 10 years? What to do about old media?
Hard vs soft media is a tough one. I'd say hold onto anything that is vaguely hard to find. anything mainstream (fight club! scarface!) you probably want to unload if you're strapped on space. DVD was a trash format though, VHS is where it's at.
Put them in a box in the closet then download. That or sell them and download.
rip the disk ISO. There are plenty of players now that will play the raw disk iso.

DVD is still pretty bad, though. Baked in interlacing and goofball frame cadence are less bad than what you get with VHS, but it's far from ideal.
I love my laserdiscs, DVD had an excellent run too. I do tend to find that a well mastered LD on a CRT looks a lot better than any DVD stretched to fit a modern TV screen, the digital compression does not age very well at all.
Embrace entropy, do what you want with whatever format. Horror movies look best on VHS, you can't see the strings. A format's flaws can have charm.
Yeah but modern equipment can at least mostly fix those issues on DVD. My cheap ass Blu-ray player does a pretty good job of deinterlacing and spits out a nice 1080p/24 signal. Not even my ridiculous video processor can make vhs look like anything but ass.
A weird thing with VHS, a first-play of a tape is a *really clean* image. I found a cute tri-color tape Ranma 1/2 Best-Of set, I was shocked by how nice the image quality was.
It's a shame it won't live, but then again who does?

I'd bought one of those crappy Cybertronics upscaling DVD players back in 2005, when I'd bought my 32" Sony HD CRT. It could do 1080i, but it would stretch 4:3 stuff pretty bad. I ran it @480p instead. That pos died 2 years later.
My 1st DVD player wouldn't play newer movies, or support progressive scan.
I was actually trying to research what the best standalone DVD player would be either for upscaling or for spitting out 480i component and feeding it to my DVDO, and other than some hideously expensive Oppo and Pioneer elite players I never found anything definitive. So fuck it, I'll keep using the bluray player and it's oversharpened DVD upscaling.Quote:

That didn't happen with VCRs. I'd say the quality got worse, even with the 6 head models.
Sony studio quality DVD players are probably the best option.
The manufacturers were trying to sell you on the new shit, so I figure the peak is going to be about a year before Blu-ray premiered. I don't expect they really gave a fuck about competing with Blu-ray or HD DVD if 'they' were trying to sell the decks themselves.
Yeah but VCRs are way more complicated than DVD players. The main quality difference in DVD players really just boils down to digital to analog conversion and scaling/deinterlacing. Current bluray players are even more basic, they can simply be transports to send digital information to audio/video devices.
I think that that most of the DVD players coming out in 2005 were hot garbage. It was a race to produce a player for under $50. The high end was winding it down in preparation for HD DVD and BR.
Yeah, I've settled on a 2001 Sony model. Was originally $1500, they go for about $150 now.
The best VHS player I've ever used was a camcorder.
Most of them only did mono audio, but the video output was almost indistinguishable from a high end S-VHS deck.
That Fisher VCR I had had all kinds of image filter and sound processing inside of it. I still think it had a better picture than my 1st DVD player from 2000, because of the tiling you can see with DVDs. It was a sad day when that VCR died.
VHS was gutter trash in it's heyday. Blurry at it's best, tracking issues, shit tier sound. You're looking through the rosest of rose colored glasses. Perhaps nostalgic for a time long past, and not a format.Quote:

What’s going on in that video? I’m on a phone speaker so it just seems like someone recorded audio off a cd to a vhs tape and clipped it a little bit?
He's showing that it records audio better than reel to reel tape and can keep 99% percent of its audio quality. The Operation Mindcrime VHS tape I was talking about sounds just as good as listening to the CD.
I've heard of VHS decks being modified to use the whole tape as an audio medium, but I didn't really understand why.

A good example is the arcade footage I posted. Its some of the best footage of that specific place, from 86, on youtube. I didn't do any audio or picture editing on it. It was all the camera and vhs deck my dad had.
Yep, it's all about the quality of the equipment. You can get away with cheaper hardware with digital, but in the world of analog, you don't want to go cheap.
I have a tape that I recorded gameplay of Tekken 2 and Beyond the Beyond on. It was recorded in SLP, so the image isn't quite as good as it would be with standard play.
This (and Tekken 2) was recorded with my old Fisher 4 head Hi-Fi VCR and it's being played back on a 6 head Daewoo VCR. The Fisher VCR was soooooo much better.

I used to get free promo tapes all of the time. Some of them were complete crap, because the companies would try to use as little tape as they could by recording them with SLP and probably a 2 head VCR.

This was some crappy tape from Midway and Nintendo for Top Gear Rally. They recorded it in SLP and it looks like total crap.

This promo tape from Nintendo for the N64 looks good. It was recorded at regular speed and has no screen noise like the SLP video tape does.

My Life in Gaming has a video or two of those promo tapes. Fun stuff. I know I have a couple n64 tapes. I wanna say Banjo and Zelda Majora.
I have (somewhere) a promo tape of Star Gladiator that I'd received from Capcom. It was pretty much a long run tape that could be used in stores to continuously look the same promo over and over again. I always wanted to try that game out, it looked pretty cool in the video.
I was going to mention some of the recordings iretrogaming showed. Some of them look pretty good. My guess is that his old man had S-VHS.
In '99 I took some psuedo inheritance money and started a videography business with a buddy. Spent like $2000 on a Sony S-VHS editing deck.
We did enough weddings and events to basically cover what I put into the high 8 cameras, titlers, and AB rollers, but that deck was mostly a S-Video switcher for my systems. My chick would throw a disney tape in it for the kids to watch and I'd flip out. "I spent too much money on that for you to use as a common VCR!"
